GR86 Focal 2 way component OEM retrofit

Thanks, will give that a go. I'm switching to the doors instead as I can feel myself getting annoyed with the tweeters already!
the doors were even tougher for me. We couldnt get the panels off and too nervous to keep pulling incase we snapped the clips.. let me know how you get on...

All done. Took about 3 hours in the end as I really didn't want to scratch anything. Some of the white door clips stayed in the door so had to pop those out to put them back on the door card. Some random black spacers also tried to make a run for it but they were put back. Sound deadening applied to inside of door. Got the tweeters off in the end but had to fiddle them into the right spot to get my fingers in a position to prise the clip off. A simple job all in but fiddly in certain areas.
The sound is better than the originals. Positive is the volume can be turned up with less distortion. There's more clarity to the sound as well. I'd like to turn the treble down a touch but without an amp, I'm not complaining.

For anyone wondering whether this is worth doing, I drove to Loughborough and back today (uni open day) and it really hit home what a difference the speakers and amp make.
I removed the Puzu and Focal speakers yesterday (as the potential buyer was due to view the car) but left the sound treatment stuff in.
Trying to listen to the radio or music today (as the buyer didn't come 🙄) was truly awful, I could barely hear them speaking so had to turn it up really loud, which just sounded even worse. It's easy to forget how a system used to sound when you upgrade, but this really surprised me - I ended up driving in silence and listening to the roar of the tyres on the A14 instead 😂

Reviving thread with some new add-ons.

Looks like a German shop is offering full speakers swap for our market - tweeters, doors and rears:

It's on a pricey side - 620E + shipping but you also get the rears.

They have offer for just the rear end tho, for 219E which is something Im interested in:

I bet, that it might help as our cars have next to zero sound insulation on this portion, so better sound coming from this section, might surpass un-wanting noises? The installation will be a hassle compared to fronts. You have to take whole quarter panels which is a pain from what I saw.

Replaced the rears with Audison speakers and supplied bracket from above shop.

Most noticeable - "something" is now playing from the rear of the car. Given the 2x increase in size (Audisons are 4") it is hearable right away. Easiest way to spot it, is when you pull the car to make left or right turn, and have to move your head. If you peek at opposite direction from driver seat (I have EU car) you will notice a more surround sound coming from the back seats.

Cons?
The prefilter mentioned by @Road_trip and any other members is limiting the speakers a lot. I'd say, even with the size, they are playing at around 45%ish of their capabilities. For maximum gains from rear speaker upgrade, you'd have to also opt the AMP/DSP from Puzu.

Is it worth it tho? for around 230E for rears alone, the Focal is defiantly better pick. If you already have Focals and want to improve the rear as well, note, to fully utilize the rears, you will have to buy more stuff than just the speakers.

If you are fine with the price and don't want additional audio equipment, it's nice to have, but shouldn't be priority. Audison speakers alone., aren't that expensive, you are essentially paying for the precut brackets at this point.

That's the kit that inspired my Pioneer rear speakers, after seeing it in @Shoggy 's build.(y)
How easy was it to fit? Presumably it was all plug and play once the trim panels were out.

I had considered fitting the Audison kit in the front too, but went for the easier option of the Focals.

To be honest I thought it's gonna be more difficult but you could do it in 1 hr. A little more hassle than the door replacements, only due to the fact that car is small (roof line). Overall fairly easy. At first, I thought the speakers are too wide, as magnet is so strong, it pulls towards the frame. You have to hold the speakers and screw in so it won't interfere with the car, but once all screws are fully in, there is legitimate 2 or 3 mm gap between speaker and the frame.

It's tight

Connectors are prepared by the Germany seller, so it's all P&P.

Did the upgrade today, straight forward with the excellent guide added about 500g of sound deadening all in all +2040 grams compared to stock 😇 Seems like a fair trade for quite an improvement in sound. Only listened for a few minutes on the drive way but will be fun to test out over this weekends road trip.

This is the one I bought £150 odd from Amazon.co.uk

A few photos to show how easy it is to install the Focal ISTOY165 kit from Focal.

First the tweeters

These are located behind the grilles at the top of the dashboard. The drivers side only has the tweeter, the passenger side also has the dedicated emergency system speaker that isn't part of the car's stereo so ignore it.

Pry up the grilles with a plastic pry tool so as to not damage the car - they grilles just pop off:

You can see the OEM tweeter here on the right:

You need to push in the little white tab towards the wires to release the connector

Then you have your tweeter and grille to remove from the car

Just pop the tweeter out by pulling back the 2 tabs and it just falls out.

Side by side- Focal left, OEM right
View attachment 20347The Focal tweeter is connected via the adaptor in the kit back to the cars harness so it's just a matter of connecting it up and isolating (should you wish) with your method of insulating tape / heat shrink etc)
Shown here before pushing home - it's quite obvious what adaptor to use and which spade connector goes on where

Original tweeter left - New tweeter with adaptor right

Then clip the new tweeter back into the grille cover (it's a bit deeper than the original so doesn't fully go over the end, but it felt secure enough to me as I think it located in some grooves on the side) You could blob a couple of bits of hot glue on if you felt the need.

Back to the car and connect

Then relocate the grille at the bonnet end first and clip it back into place. Repeat for the drivers side

Thanks for this guide.. fitted today all in all 45 mins. Most difficult part was disconnecting the tweeter connection on the front right speaker due to the short lead.

A box under the door to catch the card as it was disconnected was useful, as well as a JIS screwdriver for the fixings.

Thank you!

Another thanks for this guide, I finally got around to fitting the speakers I bought ages ago. The only part of the process that involved swearing was disconnecting the tweeters, everything else was straightforward!

Thanks for the perfect timing of your install. I just bought these on Amazon and went searching for other owners who had done the install and came accross this post. I will also be installing a PUZU DSP to mine. For the money, around £100 it’s a no brainer. Have them in all my other cars with great success.
@ninjin So you recommend fitting PUZU DSP and Focals

yes, no brainer pound to sound upgrade! I find the Focals alone very bright, with the PUZU you can tailor everything to your preference and also give the grunt the Focals need.
