GR86 Focal 2 way component OEM retrofit

The only reason I left the white stuff is it was factory fitted, I didn't want to rip it out. Taking it out would have made it easier to fit the foam liner there, instead of sliding cut to shape foam pieces between the white liner and the trim panel. It would have been neater and a more complete job replacing the whole lot.
I'm just happy to have not destroyed something that I couldn't replace. :) Yes, I worry too much!
Thanks, good effort! I want to do some deadening like you did but couldn't decide what to do with the white stuff, it doesn't look very effective. 🤔

First proper drive today and this is totally worth it. I feel you can hear much more range at lower volume levels if that makes sense.

It's obviously not as good as system in a luxury car from a premium brand but very good upgrade for this price and ease of install.

Agree fully, it's a massive improvement.

Considering the price and ease of install it's pretty much a no brainer upgrade.

Hi, guys! I am the happy owner of GR86 premium 10th anniversary from Japan (live in Cyprus) . Going to upgrade sound system with focal speakers + twitters Focal IS TOY 165. But I try to understand is this upgrade reasonable for premium version with 8 speakers or for standart version only? Thanks in advance!

Hi Roman, congratulations on getting a GR86 anniversary! (y)
The Focal IS TOY165 speakers are only suitable as a direct replacement for the front (4) in the 6 speaker cars.
The 8 speaker cars like yours have 6 in the front, 4 in the dash and 2 in the doors. The door woofers are also powered by a separate amplifier.
The gr86.org topic below has a lot of good information about the system, including speaker selection.

Тhanks a lot for reply and for the link!

Anyone experiencing alternator whine after PUZU upgrade?

I've begun noticing it recently, initially I thought it was related to android auto but its sadly not that easy a fix. It's not particularly bad, but is noticeable.

There is a post in this thread about it, someone adjusted something on the puzu to reduce it.

Yeah, I have a little bit sometimes. If there's a setting to get rid, I'd be interested, cant find it looking back through the thread.

I think is the noise gate setting. I haven't touched my noise gate (from how it came set from the factory) but what I have done is adjust the amp volume on the PUZU. I basically set it that the music will sound crap out of the speakers at 90% volume on the head unit. The factory setting on the PUZU volume is way more than the Focals can handle and I doubt you'll be able to hit 50% volume before distortion.

By reducing the amplification on the PUZU, you reduce the amplified interference too. Thus any interference you may have will be well drowned out by what you are listening to.

I've noticed it a few times with my settings. Lets say 10 times out of 2000miles of driving but I do have an ear for this type of stuff.....

Using the app last evening I reduced the main volume knob on the PUZU Android app down from stock 60 to 25 and turned the volume on the head unit up. Pretty much solved the issue at least as far as I can't hear any whine any more. Straightforward 'fix'! Didn't change the noise gate, I'm probably dense but it didn't seem to make any change from 0 to 20. Maybe it wasn't being applied.

I did this to give me some finer control of the volume back. Forget the figure but 22 on the head unit is as loud as I ever really need to go so could reduce the volume on the app further.

Next the woofers in the door..

First you need to get the door panel off the car. There's 2 screws behind a little access panel by the arm rest and another by the lock / door release handle.

Undo those, then it's time for the brave bit.

I found it easier to grab the panel by the hinge and pull as you can get your fingers behind.. it does need a bit of a pull, but it just unclips. Then work your way around the left, bottom and right and pull it away. There are a couple in the middle at the front so make sure they're all popped.

You should then be able to pivot the door card from the top and just lift it off.

Then disconnect the plugs and door handle release ball / cable from it and put it somewhere safe.

You can now get to the speaker. It's got a plug in the top which is easy to remove. Then unscrew the 3 screws and remove.

Oem left, Focal right

OEM weighs 180g, the Focal 950g as it's moving coil is much bigger.

The mounting positions are exactly the same, as are the connectors so you don't need any adaptors of any sort here, even though the kit has loads. The Focal's come with a foam mount that looks better than the OEM

I'd recommend fitting at least some sound deadening behind the speaker as it's out.

Fit to the car using the original screws, plug it back in

Then refit the door card - connect the cables back up (don't forget the light at the bottom of the door as I always do!) as well as the ball / cable bits for the door release & lock.
I found it went back on fine - maybe a little bit more jiggling as the woofer needs to get in the aperture in the door card, but once it was aligned it was a simple matter of popping the clips back into position and fitting the 3 screws and covers you took off at the start.
Great guide thanks, just one question about the clear plastic - what’s its design purpose, and is it needed?

Did anyone else really struggle getting the driver side tweeter out? I'm resisting the urge to just yank it but it's not playing nicely

struggled with both. the way we managed was 2 people, one to use a small screwdriver on the white clip, the other to pull it out.

Thanks, will give that a go. I'm switching to the doors instead as I can feel myself getting annoyed with the tweeters already!
