GR86 Focal 2 way component OEM retrofit

I’ve decided that these speakers are an unnecessary upgrade as I’ll probably be changing the car in September / October

If anybody wants a set I’m in Hawarden near Chester.. I could also drop off in the Manchester area as I’m over there frequently.. looking for what I paid ideally i.e. £120

The price is for the brand new speaker kit plus the soundproofing pack for immediately behind the door speakers
Hi I’ll PM you.

Unless you are chasing ultimate SQ, which we are not with just focals and a PUZU, the removal of the vapour barrier is really a no no. You'll be surprised at how much difference that foam makes. I was just hoping it would stop the buzz from the passenger door but has gone beyond my expectations. Report back when you have fitted it, so I know if its just a placebo effect or my ears weren't lying to me! :ROFLMAO:
I finally started to do this, only driver's door so far and I like it. I did have the annoying rattle in that door and it seems to have fixed it, only to find another - can you guess what it is 😂

The little plastic cover behind the door handle/lever? I fitted a subwoofer in the boot, which now causes a vibration in one of the child seat anchor covers 🙄

I didnt take any pics but I had the annoying vapour barrier buzz from the passenger side. So I bought some pyramid foam, as I like to call it, and stuck it all over the back of the door panel on Saturday past. No more buzzing and the sound is much tighter (I had previously put sound deadening in the doors with the Focal install). Definitley worth the £10 or so.

It compresses down well enough to not hinder refit of the door panel but also thick enough to take up any voids.

I got 2m of this:

Mine's still buzzing, depending on the music. I have ordered some similar foam, but plan to stick it to the vapour barrier directly. @ninjin , any reason you stuck it to the door card instead? Cheers

I believe the acoustic foam is applied to the trim panels as 1) the wave of the foam breaks up any sound that reaches the panel, then 2) the foam absorbs the energy of the remaining sound. If the foam is stuck to the trim panel, no sound can get round the back of the foam.

Dodo mat sq liner is sold as "Ideal for vehicle roof & door cards and also machine enclosures"

This is my door card. I also used approximately 12 local patches of butyl deadener strategically placed under the foam.

I've mentioned elsewhere couple of tips for the doorcard, tighten all the screws on the inside and the cup holder area needs particular attention for rattles.(y)

First time I used this stuff and I seen that all the Audio installs stick it on the door panel. Also, in my mind it makes sense it goes onto something solid rather than something flimsy.

That's way tidier than mine! I just slapped it everywhere and cut it back with scissors. :ROFLMAO:

Just to add, I drove to the track day last week which was near 4hrs return. Compared to the 1200mile Euro trip I done with the previous setup, the SQ with the new Puzu settings and pyramid foam have raised the bar again. I'm happy with the the results now and I'll doubt I'll be able to get it any better without a Pro Audio shop doing the setting up/Install.

I was considering a SUB but with the foam, the bass is much much tighter and weighty. Of course it doesn't drop like a proper sub ( I run a sub in my daily driver) but as the GR86 is such a noisy car to start out with, I don't think its worth spending anymore chasing SQ.

In summary with my car I carried out:

Roof Deadening
Door Deadening
Rear Quarter Deadening (next to rear seats and back into the boot)
Boot Floor Deadening
Pyramid Foam in Doors

Focals and Puzu

I'm sure the deadening has helped SQ by reducing resonance but the other big change is how solid the car panels sound, a nice thud when you tap on them. I guess the only metal panels not done are the front wings... maybe when I'm bored as I have material left over. ;)

I finally got round to fitting my sub. Really happy with it and the boost it gives to the bass/overall sound quality. Whilst I am glad I now have it, I don’t know if I can hand on heart say that it was worth the outlay and hassle doing 🤔

The speakers are now sold.. Thanks for the interest

Another very happy PUZU owner (fitted Pioneers, not Focals). Don't own a Windows laptop thus dependent on the PUZU app for configuration but I'm very happy with the presets and EQ fiddling available, definitely a solid improvement over the stock head unit driving the upgraded speakers. Very easy to fit, too

Done my upgrade today big thanks to @Dal3D pretty straightforward although weirdly drivers door was much easier.

Also numerous clips stayed in the door.

Sitting on the drive on standard settings sounds great, will try soon on my long boring motorway drive that'll really tell me if it was worth it.

Need to play with the presets more. Been spoiled by some Sennheiser kit lately so need to retune. Need to try resetting the app as I messed up the first preset on the app so using 2 or 3 currently.

Also interested in anyone's settings post focal upgrade. Haven't quite found the right balance yet, I've been able to whack up the bass a bit which is nice, but the focal tweeters can sound a bit harsh on the trebles, even when brought down a fair bit on the EQ

Don't forget that what sounds good on the driveway isn't gonna sound good on the move. My settings sound a bit harsh on the drive but when moving, they sound good.

This looks really good. Any reason you left the white stuff rather than replaced?

The only reason I left the white stuff is it was factory fitted, I didn't want to rip it out. Taking it out would have made it easier to fit the foam liner there, instead of sliding cut to shape foam pieces between the white liner and the trim panel. It would have been neater and a more complete job replacing the whole lot.
I'm just happy to have not destroyed something that I couldn't replace. :) Yes, I worry too much!
