A few photos to show how easy it is to install the Focal ISTOY165 kit from Focal.

First the tweeters

These are located behind the grilles at the top of the dashboard. The drivers side only has the tweeter, the passenger side also has the dedicated emergency system speaker that isn't part of the car's stereo so ignore it.

Pry up the grilles with a plastic pry tool so as to not damage the car - they grilles just pop off:

You can see the OEM tweeter here on the right:

You need to push in the little white tab towards the wires to release the connector

Then you have your tweeter and grille to remove from the car

Just pop the tweeter out by pulling back the 2 tabs and it just falls out.

The Focal tweeter is connected via the adaptor in the kit back to the cars harness so it's just a matter of connecting it up and isolating (should you wish) with your method of insulating tape / heat shrink etc)

Then clip the new tweeter back into the grille cover (it's a bit deeper than the original so doesn't fully go over the end, but it felt secure enough to me as I think it located in some grooves on the side) You could blob a couple of bits of hot glue on if you felt the need.

Back to the car and connect

Then relocate the grille at the bonnet end first and clip it back into place. Repeat for the drivers side

Next the woofers in the door..

First you need to get the door panel off the car. There's 2 screws behind a little access panel by the arm rest and another by the lock / door release handle.

Undo those, then it's time for the brave bit.

I found it easier to grab the panel by the hinge and pull as you can get your fingers behind.. it does need a bit of a pull, but it just unclips. Then work your way around the left, bottom and right and pull it away. There are a couple in the middle at the front so make sure they're all popped.

You should then be able to pivot the door card from the top and just lift it off.

Then disconnect the plugs and door handle release ball / cable from it and put it somewhere safe.

You can now get to the speaker. It's got a plug in the top which is easy to remove. Then unscrew the 3 screws and remove.

OEM weighs 180g, the Focal 950g as it's moving coil is much bigger.

The mounting positions are exactly the same, as are the connectors so you don't need any adaptors of any sort here, even though the kit has loads. The Focal's come with a foam mount that looks better than the OEM

I'd recommend fitting at least some sound deadening behind the speaker as it's out.

Fit to the car using the original screws, plug it back in

Then refit the door card - connect the cables back up (don't forget the light at the bottom of the door as I always do!) as well as the ball / cable bits for the door release & lock.
I found it went back on fine - maybe a little bit more jiggling as the woofer needs to get in the aperture in the door card, but once it was aligned it was a simple matter of popping the clips back into position and fitting the 3 screws and covers you took off at the start.

My first impressions when I listened to it was that it gave a much broader sound stage than OEM. I then reset the Equiliser just to see where we were starting from (as I'd done the tweaks previously to get the OEM sounding OK)

The bass is better - tighter and lower - although they'll probably need a bit of running in. The treble seems more under control to me and sharper which probably contributes to the better sound stage.

The impedence of these new drivers matches OEM nicely so the big difference is that you can now TURN IT UP far more than before without thinking you're going to blow the paper cones through the cabin in pain.

I'm no audiophile these days but from just sitting on the drive after installing it, it sounds better. The OH certainly said she noticed a bit difference when I played the same bit of music to her before and after. Of course it's no "Abbey Road mixing desk" quality you've expect from high end installation costing significantly more, but for £150 odd and half an hours work, it's a good upgrade to me.

Fab. Looks to be the exact fitment from the previous gen. Good to know, think I'll get a set ordered next week. Cheers for the write up :)

Thanks for the perfect timing of your install. I just bought these on Amazon and went searching for other owners who had done the install and came accross this post. I will also be installing a PUZU DSP to mine. For the money, around £100 its a no brainer. Have them in all my other cars with great success.
 
The car is so small, you don't rear channel for anything more than rear fill. That's why I'm just going to change the fronts and install a DSP to fine tune it to my preference.

Assuming dialling down what you send to the rears so you don’t get them distorting with the DSP. Does the DSP unit have onboard amplifier or just simply DSP? Without DSP I guess you are have to fade more to the front speakers? It’s been a while (cough years) since I played around car audio setups.
