GR86 GR86 - What wheels and tyres are you thinking about?

I've a set of black nuts to go on, can wait until the weather warms up a bit

215/45/17 Goodyear Asymmetric 6 fitted on my eBay purchase today. Not sure about the look, but the driving feels great. Estimated weight 16kgs. Faster responses all round.

ET is 48 so I am thinking about fitting some spacers, maybe 10mm. What affect would that have on the handling?

I run 10mm spacers as I run et50. No issues whatsoever

How do you find the tires for feel / noise / comfort - compared to PS4’s??

I have been using Goodyear Vector 4's 17/45/225 during the winter. The AS6 are quieter, more comfortable and have more grip that those tyres.

Against the PS4's I would say they are quieter and more comfortable. BUT the PS4's are 18's whereas the AS7's are 17's, so they should be quieter and more comfortable. That was one of the reasons for the swap.

Just about to go out with my other half. Her verdict will be important!!

I should add that the Vector 4's are 94 weight rating and the AS6 are 87. So softer in the sidewall.

The OEM PS4's are 85 I believe .

And the AS6's are on wheels about 2.5 kg less than the Vector 4's. I believe that affects how it feels too.

Went down the rabbit hole to select summer wheels… I was considering some GramLights (57DR/NR) till I got shot down by the fact, I’m not gonna be able to put them through the registration process (similar to TÜV) 😬

Researched the wheels that have at least some kind of certification which would allow me to have them registered and at the same time they’re lighter than the stock 18s.

Went through (what feels like) many wheels and their certifications
  • Borbet DB8GT2 18x8.5 ET35
  • Japan Racing SL01 18x8 ET35
  • Japan Racing SL02 18x8.5 ET42
  • Japan Racing SL03 (no certification yet 😬)
  • Motec Ultralight MCR2 18x8 ET35 (not certified for 86)
Which most of these required some modifications to the fenders. Finally ended up decided on Thomason TN25 (18x8 ET45), only to find out they’re out of stock everywhere and will be available in late April/May.

So back to it again and finally I made a decision and ordered TEC GT Race-I 18x8 ET40 8.15kg in bronze 😊

Wheels should arrive in two weeks or so. I will probably put the stock PS4 on them to get them registered and then will try SC7 in 225/40 which according to the ABE might need some modifications, if so back to 215 or 225/35 should be without modifications too 😅

Nice! The sketchup/pic at the bottom looks like its on 17's though, so should look even better in the flesh on 18s. Post pics once fitted please!

They obviously didn't turn it into a Lexus, but I found the Goodyears in 225 section quieter and more compliant. And more sure footed.

Edit: to be clear, this was the F1 Asymmetric 6, not their winter or all-season tyres.

Were they more progressive than the PS4? My rears are getting on for replacement and the Asym.6 is on my list.

Found the PS4 a little snappy, although a geo change (toe in at the rear) basically fixed that.

I haven't really pushed them as they were fitted in October, so I haven't had much fun driving time since then. But I think so....I feel more secure with them than I did on the PS4.

Well, after nearly 20k miles, it's time to say goodbye to the Michelin CC2s in 225 width. On Friday, I am having four 225 wide Continental SportContact 7s fitted, £405 all in. I will keep the CC2s just in case they are needed next winter for a short stint, they have done me well. I did call the insurance stealers to double check, so that was another £20 just for good luck. The SC7s do have good reports in the wet, so lets see how this summer treats us! Just in time before the second service and JapFest. :)
