GR86 Importing my 2023 JDM BRZ

SUSPENSION

This time around, the suspension is far more conservative and all the better for it. With my first BRZ, I over-lowered it with H&R Super Sport springs and over-damped it with Bilstein B8 dampers. It was too stiff and wanted to take hard corners with the rear hopping. It was also too low and consequently grounded quite a lot, eventually putting a big dent in the (awful) TD exhaust.

Lessons learned. This time around, I have retained the stock 18" wheels which are rather nice, and got rid of the noisy 215 Michelin PS4 in favour of 225 Goodyear F1 A6 to increase the contact patch. Grip and handling are instantly improved. Furthermore, the track is widened with 15mm JapSpeed studded spacers and the car is lowered around 12mm with STi Gen 2 red springs. Abbey Motorsport performed a 'fast road' alignment. The result is better clearance on the country lane I live in, far better handling, more grip and more supple ride quality. This is definitely a case of less is more.

Loving the modest 12mm drop Martin, is this on the standard dampers (assume brz/gr86 dampers are identical) ? Do you know the spring rates of these Gen2 STi springs?

LOL - it actually looks good, rides really well and avoids all the pothole crashing down the single track lane I use every day (as compared with my old BRZ on H&R Super Sport springs that bottomed out continuously and dented the exhaust several times).

Yes, the STi springs are specifically designed for the stock dampers. I believe (but it's not verified) that the STi ZD8 red spring rates are 5.0 F / 4.0 R kgf/mm.

Thanks. Just as I asked you this I also asked a Gen1'er who showed me a post where some info on the sti spring rates were given (gen1 though), and sent me to a page where these very same numbers were quoted (post20) , but later disputed (post22) , so I'm not sure. https://www.ft86club.com/forums//showthread.php?t=120033&page=2

Either way - glad its decent ride quality and I think I may pair them with either the OEM dampers or some Bilsteins in due course.

Also think spacers are needed (moreso at the front than rear, particularly with camber) when lowering as you have so I'm glad to see it pairs up well :)

Just a warning - I had Bilstein B8 in the old BRZ. They are incredibly firm and I found them too firm, really, for daily use.

I think you've made the right choice if you're dailying your car. I've got KWV1 coilovers which are meant to be one of the softer coilovers available. They perform better than stock - they deal with the road surface incredibly well while providing vastly improved body control - but they are a wee bit crashy at slow speeds. At medium to high speeds they're fine, possibly a better than stock ride, but the slow speed crashiness would be a bit much as a daily on uneven roads.

I have Tein RX1 on my car and they are more comfortable than stock. Can turn them up for track days, which make them much stiffer than stock.

I have now received the LED DRL/Indicator vent kit. I will need a decent day to get this done on the drive (the garage is too cramped). Has anyone done these? Oops - silly me - the GR86 has a different vent design.

I am interested! Which version / brand did you go for? I think there were a couple options when I last looked.

I made a start with the intention of installing the lights today, laying it all out to get the wiring running correctly. I had to stop, though, as it's a job for a sunny day that isn't blowy and with my back feeling better as a bit too much yoga put it out the other day. I shall return to it as soon as I have a better day.

Meanwhile, I should receive the Password gurney flap for the boot soon, to finish off the OEM+ exterior styling.

Password Gurney Flap installed. That 3M tape sticks like a bastard! I'm pleased that the carbon fibre matches the Greddy rear window aero. Note that this is the 'Low Wall' version. I think the 'High Wall' would be too much of a good thing.

I think so, I wasn't sure at first but I really like the boot outline from the rear. I'll drive it later and will see if there are any adverse wind/whistle noises.
I was pretty close to ordering one myself.. but I couldn't quite bring myself to pay the high delivery charge (I realise it's high because the box will be very long) and then I thought, as I don't have any carbon on my car, it might have looked out of place. On yours, with the carbon aero strip, it looks just right.
I am on the hunt for a black one now.

As I've become used to it, I really do like the Password Gurney Flap. It's different without being boy-racer, looks good and is functional without making any wind noise or drawing attention to itself. No effect on fuel economy, either. It sets off the car's lovely curves and makes my JDM BRZ even more unique among a sea of dreary SUVs.

I'm happy with the performance, too. I can't think I'll go with boosting unless I get really bored some day. Difficult to be bored with this car, though, it forces a grin as soon as I set off anywhere.
