GR86 GR86 security

I'm tempted by this, so a genuine toyota alarm that doesn't foul up the 10 year warranty if i went 3rd party. Same questions as others how much of the car will they rip apart and leave rattles. Doesn't sound like the local dealerships would have done this before either. 🤔

Its a not a solution but I think makes recovery of my car more likely - I have an airtag and a tile pro discreetly hidden under some trim in my car.

It doesnt stop it being nicked - but my experience of car theft - is that crims often park them up for a few days to check that police arent tracking them.

It has tracked successfully at airport car parks and the like without issue.

Unless this ‘new’ alarm is Thatcham approved (which I doubt as Thatcham doesn’t list one for the GR86), then it isn’t going to make any difference to insurance, rather it being just a confidence thing (same as the Ghost immobiliser on mine). I know that to get Thatcham approval a system is required to have a specified number of ‘cuts’ into the ECU connections and wiring. I wouldn’t trust any local dealership to fit an alarm correctly given that they can’t even order an oil filter on time and have previously declared that using a Subaru one would invalidate the warranty 🤦‍♂️
As others posted in the early days of this thread, there are numerous ways to reduce the likelihood of theft without the drama of having an alarm installed. My precautions include the OE and Ghost Immobilisers, a monitored Tracker, a Stoplock Pro-Elite and having it parked wedged between my garage door and a 2Tonne pick-up. All of our keys are kept in Faraday bag within a Faraday Box ‘guarded’ by 4 dogs. If it still gets stolen then maybe they deserve a round of applause and some Haribo Tangfastics for their efforts… 😆

Does having a Ghost 2 imobilizer fitted stop your warranty or are Toyota OK with it. Do they have recomended installers.
Interesting watching the different videos about the DiskLock Plattinum. Angle grinders went through disks. Drill bits had no affect. I was impressed and I was a trained toolmaker so was interested to see that many different testers said the same thing. £300 is a lot of money but new cars are also costly.
Interesting to hear a couple say that Ghost 2 is also excellent but put plenty of stickers on.
I am considering a new RAV4 as daily which is a big target. Videos show them drilling and then cutting a hole in the door to get to the bus and then bombard the system with fake data to overcome the security system. They recommended disklock gold or even better plattinum with Ghost and stickers that stop them drilling the holes or taking out the front light before they realise it has a secondary system.
To me Ghost is needed with disklock but that 10 year warranty means everything to me especially if I intend to keep it for 10+ years like my last RAV4.
I need to ask Toyota how you stand with Ghost 2.

The Autowatch Ghost 2 immobiliser will invalidate your Warranty. I have already asked Toyota directly about fitting one and, like ANY third party modification, Toyota will not honour the warranty if the modification is contributory to the fault.
That said, the Ghost is a totally passive (hidden) system and unlikely to cause any issues, but with any (non-OEM) deviation to a ‘stock’ vehicle you have an element of risk. It’s down to the individual as to how much of a ‘risk’ they are willing to accept… 🤔

I’d imagine it would invalidate the electronics side of the warranty, for things like electrical gremlins.

Would love to see them argue that a tracker invalidates anything suspension related under the warranty for example.

I think I'm going to take one for the team and will get the Toyota alarm installed - can't say no to free stuff that's supposed to come with the car:D - wish me luck. (Still have time to change my mind though!)
Anyone else brave enough and have taken up the offer of the alarm?

I haven’t had an offer yet, Ombudsman case is ongoing. I will probably go for it if offered an alarm.

From what I read, doesn't the Ghost 2 still allow Canbus Injection attack?

My perspective is there is nothing better that a classic Starter Cut or Fuel Cut via a relay, not of this electronic Canbus stuff. On my new Alphard, if I cant isolate the starter with a hidden switch relay, then I will get a META BLE42 immobiliser fitted that cuts the starter circuit. Have them fitted to our work vehicles and they work well.

No amount of Can injection or Relay attack will be able to start the car without physically removing the META immobilliser.
