GR86 GR86 security

On Toyotas if you hold the lock button and press unlock twice on the key, it turns off the key broadcasting. Pressing a button wakes the key back up.

This means you can protect your car from relay attacks every night without fully disabling it.

Also remember, you only need the hardest car to steal on the street, not make it impossible. Steering lock, bollards, cctv, ultion door locks, modern house alarm obviously fitted etc all add to how unattractive it is to anyone snooping about.

Car makers spending billions on upping the security of cars over the last few decades and doing a decent job TBF and they give us keyless entry that no one asked for and undo all their good work and now we resort to steering locks from the 80's to stop the car being nicked :ROFLMAO: Give us a bleedin' key!

I can count on one hand the number of Gen 1 cars that have been reported stolen on the forum/facebook in the 9 years I've had mine. Two of these were because the thiefs were targetting another car the owner had.

They are the wrong sort of car / not valuable enough to be a target. I'd be more concerned about vandalism than theft, even then my concern is extremely low.

Lauren's is the only one I can think of and they were probably after the Yaris

I’ve used ALA several times over the years. Really good team there and very helpful.

If enough are interested they will likely sort us out a good discount for the site.
TBH they are the only company I’ve ever used 👍
I always take out GAP but it won’t be any help getting a new 86 should something happen!

Considering additional CCTV and trackers for security
Garage and GAP from ALA for me too. MSE25 always used to get you 25% off the online price.
So I notice on ALA's key facts sample doc that some of the restrictions are:
  • Your insurer replacing your car or offering you a replacement car in settlement which you decline;
  • Your insurer offering to repair your car but you requesting the claim to be dealt with on a total loss basis instead.
That doesn't sound right to me. I assume the insurer may offer me choice of write-off or repair on their own terms (and even repairer of their choice). I would have good reason to opt for the total loss option. Not getting the gap money in that case seems unfair.

What are your thoughts. In the case of major accidents (or theft with the car eventually found severely damaged), do insurers tend to declare a "write-off" or do they tend to offer a choice of repair or write-off?

Thanks

Yes, exactly this. GR86 is a poor car to steal really. Having a Disklok as a visual deterrent is a good idea and boxing the car in with another car is always a good idea. You could also add a Ghost. I would also say never leave your keys downstairs and have them in a secure place. The more difficult you make it to nick, the harder it is.

If anyone is considering getting a steering wheel lock then here's a pic of a Stoplock Pro Elite in a GR86 - I tried the cheaper Pro version but couldn't get it to fit (not enough clearance between it and the horn). I wrap a length of double-sided velcro around the steering wheel rim and the Stoplock arm to hold the arm clear of the indicator stalk.

A Disklok would be better though wouldn't it? It would also negate the need to faff with velcro.

Thanks for sharing, I've also bought the same steering wheel lock, so good to know it will fit okay.

I have a Disklok in my GRY and it's great, but it's a hassle to get on/off, so decided to go for the Stoplock for the GR86 which I intend to use more often day-to-day than the GRY.
I'm probably getting a Disklok. Presumably it needs the small size?
I use a Small for the GR Yaris, so should fit fine in the GR86.

Yes, it is a bit of a faff, though I use it only when I'm at home. No need when I'm elsewhere.

What annoyed me is that these things are built like tanks, and I've marked my steering wheel when opening/closing the disklok - this is with the steering wheel cover on too! :cautious:

I have the pro elite, i have the lock part top right and the yellow end sits nicely in the gear gaiter, takes 5 seconds to fit so i use it everywhere
This is what I'm also doing now, cheers! Extra piece of mind to have these fitted

I miss the old days of removing the distributor arm, progress eh!

Hi All, I had a stoplock Pro (not elite) lying around and can confirm it does fit in the position below with the 2 prongs go through either side of the wheel so it rests almost horizontal. No obvious rubbing on the stalk or gripping the wheel too tight.

I think visual wheel locks are well worth it.
As far as the GR cars being big targets I am not sure about that. I know 3 people who have had their cars nicked. One was a Range rover. A large Audi SUV and an electric Mitsubishi. All big SUVs that were probably put in a container straight away and sailed off. All from the driveway and none had a wheel lock. How can they spend £50k+ on a car and not buy a wheel lock for £50-£100. I don't get it!
Our cars are £30K cars that are fun little things but not much use other than that.
There will always be opportunists that see a car outside and hope the keys are on the hall table - but they shouldn't be when a safe can be bought for £50.
Sensible precautions should do the job but I am not too concerned.
How many GRY have been stolen after 2 years of them?
