With it looking like there will only be 400 cars plus demo/press cars in the U.K. how desirable will the GR86 be to car thieves? With such a low number , and nearly 50% of owners on here, a good half of the cars will be ”Well Known” and I wouldn’t imagine they will be easy to move on here , unless they are stuck in a container and shipped abroad.

My car will be normally garaged and I always get GAP insurance (usually from ALA) but what are folks thoughts on other security measures ?

It's insured if the worst happens. GAP is another thing to think about. That said for my brother's 86 I bought a Stoplock for him one Christmas so at least there's a visual deterrent. If they want it they'll normally be prepared enough to take it. Keys kept in faraday pouches too and not near front of house.

What is GAP insurance? Googled it but wasn't totally clear.
Is it the same as agreed value?

Annoying as it is, there will always be people that will vandalise and try and steal any sort of car that is desirable. Just do the basics, hide keys and keep in a faraday pouch, but if someone wants it they will try and take it.
I’ve had a couple Golf R’s previously and although I never had any issues where I live with any damage or attempted theft. I read so many stories on forums where they found people in their house in the middle of the night trying to locate the keys. Just remember it’s a car at the end of the day and protecting yourself / family is more important.

I think (hope) they will be too rare for most thieves to bother with, they will stick out like a sore thumb so difficult to move on complete and the market for second hand parts will be very small too so not worth breaking them.
I did think about another insurance aspect the other day, what if it gets written off (applies equally to being stolen of course) towards the end of 2023, insurance pays out but can you get another? No more new cars to even buy, private import route?

Getting a new one isn’t going to be an option. Lots of cars end up written off by insurance companies due to the cost of replacing airbags which may have been activated during a shunt. I’m sure a lot of GR86s if they are damaged will end up being rebuilt. I know some folk get insurance which allows them to keep the car in the event of it being written off so they can rebuild it 🤔

I always take out GAP but it won’t be any help getting a new 86 should something happen!

Considering additional CCTV and trackers for security

Certain cars including Golf Rs and Audi S/RS and the like are desirable to thieves due to certain characteristics, such as being ideal getaway vehicles for crime because of space, point to point pace and anonymity. Sports cars can appeal less as they don't always meet certain requirements.

Yeah true, a GR86 would be a poor choice as a getaway car if they needed to get someone in the back :ROFLMAO:

Thankfully Range Rovers/BMW/Audi etc all common as muck are nice and easy to steal with keyless entry and the like, low hanging fruit and all that :p

Is the GR86 keyless entry? Sounds bad but I’ve still ignored the spec sheet. Like the element of surprise when I get it, setting a low expectation on tech before hand.

Might take some playing with to turn it off but definitely looks possible.

Not specifically a security feature, but apparently you can temporarily disable the keyless entry and program a combination code using the boot release button. You can then leave the key in the car and unlock it with the stored combination code.
Quite a convoluted process, and I can't see I would ever use it, but I suppose it could be useful if you were going sailing or something and didn't want to risk losing/damaging the key

Isn't GAP insurance a bit redundant if the car trades at a premium. If I crashed on day 30 of having the car I'd be pretty annoyed if I 'only' got rrp back (Return to Invoice GAP) and t would be pretty tough for an insurer to argue it was worth less too. As far as I'm aware Return to Value GAP is more for second hand cars.

Maybe agreed value car insurance is the way to go?
