Omni Consumer Products Amazon have the Stoplock Pro Elite for £53 at the moment, which appears to be a nice saving against RRP.

Aw man, I thought we’d left this sort of mullarky behind 20 odd years ago - but must be cos my last few cars have been so unappealing to your typical joyrider…🤣 (#classicsaabsrule) You really think these sort of precautions are needed these days - I thought (naively?) that modern cars were all thatham approved up the wazoo right out of the box, and you either had to nick the keys or ping the keys if they weren’t kept in a faraday pouch?? So yer average scumbag can still just pinch your car without your keys?? That’s disappointing people…
I really don’t want a disc lock again, they’re such an awkward clattery thing to hoik around from the rear footwell - even more so in an ‘86 no doubt, (and with this back..?😵‍💫😣) I guess the stoplock elite it is then, even though from a quick google, it looks relatively easy to outwit…

Got Ghost Immobiliser for my GRY, and it gives me great peace of mind. Even if someone gets my keys, the car isn't going anywhere.

The way I see it, my car is at most risk of being stolen when I'm at home. I only use the Disklok at home on my car. There is no need to use it when my car is not on the driveway. I also have a Ghost. The main reason for the Disklok is a visual deterrent to help put off thieving scum from breaking into my house, which they did last year. They found the keys to the GT86 and nicked (and ruined) that instead when they couldn't find my GRY keys.

The way I see it, make it as absolutely difficult as possible. Box your car in with the cheaper car, use a Disklok, get a Ghost and keep your keys in a secure place and never leave them downstairs. Most burglars will not want a confrontation and they don't want to risk that by coming upstairs.

Remember cameras do little to deter burglars because they will be bally'd up. Unless they are careless and you get a forensic hit, or get arrested on their getaway you've got pretty much no chance of convicting them. I work with kids who burgle houses to nick cars.

What's this "ghost" thing? Worth it - I thought our GR's came with factory immobilisers?
It's an immobiliser that is not visible. You have to do a sequence of button presses on the steering wheel. You configure what these are. You can't start the car without doing so. If you try and start the car, you will just get the ignition on but it won't start. The Ghost unit is buried deep in the wiring loom.

I have a disk lock and will use it. Even use it on my swift sport when away from home / in a dodgy, or unknown area. But I'll probably use it all the time in the GR86. The way I see it is that although it's less likely to get stolen compared to Range Rovers, RS6s, Golf Rs, etc. It's my car / money tied up in it and will be difficult to replace if it does get nicked / wrecked by someone, so I'm not taking the risk.

Has anyone had a Ghost immobiliser fitted to their GR86? I'm due to pick up my GR86 from Jemca Bracknell this week so i would be interested to know if it's avaiable for the GR86.
I had it fitted to my Focus RS Mk3 when i got the car nearly 6 years ago - never had a problem with it.

Bumping the thread. I wasn't going to bother with a steering wheel lock, as I'd hoped the car wasn't all that desirable - about the only thing which makes it desirable is it's rarity. However, I got chatting to a guy who lives up the road from me, only 10 doors or so. He advised me getting one, as it turns out his car was stolen off the driveway a few months ago. He had a Mercedes convertible or some sort, said he woke up about 3am because he heard a scrape as it was driven off his drive (all the houses on our road have badly designed driveways with high breakover angles, anything lower than a crossover scrapes over them), but didn't think much of it, thinking it was his adjacent neighbour parking up or something, so drifted back to sleep. Got up a few hours later to find the car gone. It had keyless entry and he said he'd stupidly left his keys in the kitchen (our kitchens are at the front of the house), so it looked like they just spoofed the signal and got into the car. He now uses a steering lock every night and has a floodlight/camera overlooking his drive. The same neighbour said he thinks he saw some guys in a car parked not far from his house who may have been scoping it out a couple of weeks prior, but didn't think much of it at the time.

I make sure to keep my keys well inside the house anyway, but think that a steering lock might be a good deterrent. Obviously if they really want the car they'll take it. But it sounds like they saw an opportunity to get hold of a car fairly easily and quietly - not something they can do if they have to spend any time trying to use a grinder on a wheel lock. My car sits on the road (because of the aforementioned driveway issue), so I do feel it looks a bit vulnerable sometimes. I assume the Stoplock Pro Elite mentioned above is the one to go for then?

EDIT: Quick update....had a look around and went for the Milenco HS wheel lock. Attracted to it mainly because it's design means it should be easy to remove and stow in the car when not in use, tucked behind the seats or something. But a couple of reviews suggest it's as strong as the Stoplock and resists attack just as well. Some links below - it's about £70 on Amazon, but Halfords currently have it at £64.99 and have an extra 10% off code valid until Wednesday (PAYDAY10), plus free delivery over £20. So just ordered it for £58 from them. Links below - I'll post when it arrives tomorrow to confirm how it fits on the GR.

Bonus: it's heavy and is shaped like a baton, meaning that if you caught someone in the act, you could also beat their scum heads in and bury them deep in the forest, not that I am condoning brutal murder as a legitimate response to car theft, your honour.

Lock has arrived. First impressions are good. Supplied with 3 keys, is about the size of a rounders bat, and weighs enough that you could definitely batter scumbags to death with it it should be able to resist a determined attack. Was easily able to tuck it between the front passenger seat and the rear bench when not in use. Easy to operate - open the lock, twist, slide over the wheel, twist back, lock, done.

The recommended configuration would be to have the metal prongs bracket around one of the wheel spokes, but this is a bit awkward as it might get in the way as you get in/out of the car (unless you have the wheel turned)...

You could also just have it attached to the top part of the wheel. Obviously that allows the wheel to be moved a bit more, so you could conceivably drive off with it attached, but you wouldn't get far. but this is the most convenient and easiest to fit configuration.

There's plastic trim on the "U" section where it meets the main body of the locking bar, which should protect the outside of the steering wheel from marks. But I think I'll probably add some felt trim tape around any part of it which might contact the wheel, just to prevent any risk of scratching.

Thanks @Conscript I have just ordered one. Although Halfords put the price up to £70 today. So I opted to buy from the fine, but slow website of Southdowns Motorhome Centre at £61 delivered. I don't expect I will get overnight delivery like you though. Supporting a small business is always a nice way to go.

Bumping the thread. Anyone have any experience with Ghost 2 immoboliser or anything similar?

I was contacted by my neighbour who said there have been suspicious people hanging around my car. Apparently, she noticed the same people twice now, with one guy walking around the place (maybe trying to find a signal) and another next to my car, even taking photo of the VIN number in the windscreen.

The first time she thought they may have been my friends and I wasn't home, but the second time I bumped into her 15 mins earlier so she knew I was at home, so she knew it was suspicious as I would be out with them or invited them in. The car they were in was waiting round the corner and as soon as she came towards the entrance the two on foot got spooked and went away quickly.

I'm going to get the dealership to disable the keyless entry and I've got a steering lock from Halfords, any other recommendations? I hear that Ghost 2 is good as you need to enter a sequence in the steering wheel buttons otherwise the car cuts off as soon as you put it in gear, seems decent value at £450 fitted. Anyone used one before?

In the meantime make sure both your keys are disabled. While holding the Lock button down on the fob, press unlock twice. You should see the led flash 4 times and you can check by seeing if the keyless entry will still let you in. It shouldn't as your key won't wake up till you press another button. I do this every evening.

Thanks, will give that a shot!

This video shows you how to switch it off.
Ghost is supposed to be very good but I would still have a Disklock as a visual deterrant. Keyless was switched off within an hour of getting mine.
When I had new tires the chap came back and asked me to start it as he couldn't and he had the keys in his hand - so it does work going back to the old fassioned way. I would still have an actual key you put in and turn before keyless. Silly idea with all these thieves about!

I have Ghost in my GRY.

Gives great peace of mind, and very easy to use. Very happy getting it installed was one of the first things I did when I got the car.

It doesn't cut out if you don't enter the code, it simply doesn't start.
