GR86 GR86 security

Has anyone established whether there is a third party alarm that is confirmed to work with the GR86 and does not require an additional fob? And can anyone advise on the cost of a fully fitted Ghost? The ombudsman have acknowledged my case (took nearly 6 months!) and if they do find in my favour I would at least like an idea of what’s available.

Cobra is the only company that do an alarm that will link into the factory canbus. However, currently they do not have any wiring instructions and due to the low numbers in Europe, they won't be doing it.

I have one for the GT86 which cobra said had the same BCU so should work. But upon fitting , I discovered the canbus colours to all be different and the indicator relay was also missing on the GR.

I wonder what other markets are installing. There are definitely regions which have an alarm installed so you’d hope that may be a route to pursue.

Keep us updated, would like to see if the alarm integrates with the keyless or is another remote fob.

I have been offered an OE alarm to be fitted at an approved Toyota center. So it sounds like they can get parts delivered and fitted now...
😲 Wow! This is unexpected. I expect most of the GR86 Zoo are awaiting developments...

That’s a huge surprise - was this off the back of an ombudsman case?

Likewise would be interested to hear the outcome, process and details on what they’re fitting.

Having had a few extremely frustrating exchanges with TUK’s “customer service” team on the subject last year and made zero progress id resigned myself to having to reach out to the ombudsman. If they’ve finally resolved the situation I might be more inclined to go that route vs seeking financial compensation for the lack of alarm.

I have sometimes wondered if this was possible. Will be interesting to discover the outcome.

I was also offered an alarm, but have rejected the offer as they were very sketchy regarding the fitment and what would need to be done, said it was plug and play and also had intrusion sensors so I think considerable removal off trim and modification will be needed and I cant be bothered with the hassle. The dealers don't really understand the car as its really a Subaru and as many have said before anything to do with the ECU frightens them. I believe as owners of the car from new we should be compensated for a feature that was clearly advertised and not provided. I cannot believe they have engineered a unique solution that will fit a a UK wiring harness, I think the offer is just to appease the ombudsman and show willing.

I’d be interested to see the relevant technical note or installation document accompanying whatever system they’re proposing to install.

If it’s truly a plug and play unit without the need for modifications to the body wiring harness, drilling of any part of the shell etc id entertain it. The proviso being I’d still be extremely selective about what dealership I entrusted to carry out the work.

I was offered retrofit of an alarm and parking sensors via the ombudsman. I hadn't requested parking sensors because I was already offered them when they were missing from the initial spec. I used this as an example to the ombudsman of Toyota picking and choosing what they would supply and not what was on the spec sheet.

Do you intend to accept the alarm offer? I am pretty close to 90 days on from Toyota responding to the ombudsman on my case, so am expecting to hear something soon. Now that these reports are coming out I expect it will be an offer of an alarm if anything, which would suit me fine, but I'd rather someone else go first!

Just to confirm, it was as a result of an ombudsman case. The outcome I was offered after being upheld was to get a third party alarm installed and get £500 contribution towards it, or hand the car back with a depreciation calculation included. Toyota UK then got in touch to say that they could now get OE alarm fitted at approved centre but I have yet to get any further details about fitment etc.

The initial outcome of £500 towards a third party alarm or hand the car back is surprisingly poor considering Toyota GB won’t even advise on a compatible alarm that works with the existing key fob. Toyota know that most people won’t be guinea pigs on an untested solution, and are unlikely to hand a car like this back - it’s not like you can go across the road to Nissan or Honda and get an equivalent.

In my opinion, the outcome should have been fitting an OE alarm, hand the car back, or £500 partial refund without any strings attached, which could then be spent on whatever security we like (or anything at all). As it stands it looks like Toyota are going to get away with this screw up with minimal impact - maybe a couple of grand considering how few of us went to the ombudsman?

They’ve been utterly woeful from the outset with every issue I’ve contacted them in relation to. I’m just glad (touch wood) that the car has behaved itself as I wouldn’t relish the prospect of having to attempt to resolve any warranty issues with them.

Is anyone on here friendly with their local dealership? I’m wondering if one of us approached a service department about the issue they might be able to add a little detail to what the solution being offered actually entails and how invasive the retrofit is.

No, I also asked for the auto dimming mirror, they didn't offer anything for that. Getting dazzled by vehicle behind is probably more of an issue than the lack of alarm.
