GR86 GR86 Confessions

My confession is that I recently made a choice not to drive my car out of embarrassment :D

Earlier this year I was made redundant, and worked my final day about 3 weeks ago. Mainly been looking at jobs in London, which would mean a rail commute, and had no luck. But I got a callback last week about a job in Biggin Hill which would mean driving to the office. No problem, as I used to drive my GT86 to our old office in Orpington (nearby) 5 days a week, and the new role is only 3 days a week in the office.

I got offered an interview, and despite it being a tiny company and a "smart casual" attitude to interview attire...I still decided to drive my girlfriend's Kia to the interview....something in the back of my mind told me that turning up in a bright blue sports car might not be the best first impression to make to a potential employer; might look a bit showy and ostentatious to anyone not really into cars, despite being only a Toyota.

Luckily the interview went very well, and the guys were very friendly and laid back. I've been invited back for a second interview next week; and when I got asked about hobbies etc, I did say that 'I'm a bit of a petrolhead...' - but still, I'm not sure whether it might be best to take the Kia again, and save rumbling into their carpark with my bright blue mid-life crisis until my first day, when I have a signed contract of employment :D
Yep, that all sounds spot on to me - can see exactly where you’re coming from.
Best of luck with the job✌️

i mean it probably does depend on your job sector but you could look at it another way, a confident person, appearing like you've been successful and made some money in your previous job and can afford a good car.

Maybe...I think it's more that I went for the bright blue, ducktail spoiler and aftermarket exhaust, which kind of attracts attention (to my embarrassment). I doubt I would have been bothered if I had a silver or dark grey car.

In reality, it probably doesn't really matter at all, and most people wouldn't really care; but I've had no luck with job searching so far, so figured it best to play it safe.

There are one it two at my job that would make comments about someone being paid to much if they drove a £20k sports car, but the same is not said about the £40k SUV so I can see why you'd not take the GR in before you got the job. People are odd 🙂

My 2nd ever job I turned up in a then brand new Fabia vRS Estate I got the day I handed my notice in on my first job. I often think similar when I meet new people too. Do I turn up in the GR or the old Swift and see how they judge.

Firstly and most importantly, very best of luck for the interview.

In terms of taking the GR86 or not, I suppose it's industry/role dependent.

You'll probably be alright, unless the role is with Greenpeace, Just Stop Oil, BRAKE, or the Society for Standard Fit Car Alarms.

Ganbatte!

Thanks, it's an IT role, so hopefully not too image obsessed. I already felt a bit out of place in a suit and tie! Still, I may play it safe for now.

Bit of a confession here, that despite 14 months and about 11k miles of daily driving (on original ps4s) I have yet to loose rear traction 🫣 (aside from the occasional chirp)

I’m not saying that I toddle about like I’m driving a shopping car btw

Realise it makes me seem like a bit of a chicken, but I guess my question is where do you guys find a chance to switch off the skid button and enjoy the ahem, playful rear end?

I’d kinda like to see what my own (and the cars limits) feel like. I don’t see myself taking the car on track and it never seems to be clear enough on roads or roundabouts etc. Do you go out in the middle of the night after rain??

I dont really either in the day to day. The traction control on / normal mode steps in quite quickly but if you exit a junction or roundabout and provoke it a little as long as the car thinks you're in control and sorting it out doesnt intervene too much but you cant get any 'angles' on it.
I have only once or twice turned the track mode on and pre meditated a junction exit for example and got some angle on it but I dont drive around in track mode ever, the roads are not for me wide enough or quiet enough to risk any slides.

I did have a play with it to see what happens on a grass field car park and the track mode allows a LOT of angle before stepping in as long as youre doing opposite lock etc. It stops you spinning but the bck end can be very loose.
