Yep, that’s a good chunk of people giving up hope of a new one and going used. Not sure how that could do anything but increase demand for used cars, increasing the price.

Mine too, to be honest. My thoughts are once we hit max GR Yaris and the waitlist is going to be disappointed there is going to be a price bump.
I think a few factors like that, and the likelihood of it being the last dino powered homologation special in the UK will keep the residuals high

If there is another one I can’t see where it’s going to come from, or for what purpose, as the homologation rules have changed and WRC is hybrid now.
That’s not to say future hybrid rally homologation cars won’t be great fun, or even full electric ones, but they won’t have a clutch or manual box, and won’t weigh less than 1,400 kg, so I’m not interested!

mk1 will be the only homologation model. any revisions after that are not pure homologation cars as regulations do not require such.

The whole homologation thing is overblown anyway. All sorts of mundane and unexceptional cars have FIA homologation.
For example, the 1.4 Dacia Logan was homologated for Grp. A. Don't see anyone out chasing them for their motorsport connections!

true - it is not that seldom. Quite many sports cars have that homologation existing. It is maybe a academic relation as such, but nevertheless it's there.

Not only that, but as far as I know there's currently no part of the WRC car that has to match the road car except for the silhouette. It can be scaled up or down to fit the regulations' wheelbase, though I don't know if it can be distorted (scaled differently in different directions). The rules they were aiming for, if I'm not mistaken, required the same hood, doors, roof, hatch, and unibody from the road car.
They may change back to production-based vehicles one day (though I doubt it), but for now I think the only benefit of a WRC homologation special would be basic body shape (like the dropping roof line of the GRY helping get air to the WRC car's spoiler).
Right, but there's a distinction between a car that is homologated and a homologation special. I think homologation mostly requires making at least 2,500 production cars and filling out paperwork (granted, the car has to meet certain rules for the relevant series).
All sorts of cars are homologated. How much of the road car makes it to the race car depends on what the series allows teams to modify. And if the un-modifiable bits that the road car brings are unsuitable, it won't win many races.
A homologation special is produced to homologate some specific features that the series doesn't allow to be modified from the road cars. They include something on the homologation special that can't be on the race car otherwise. The normal 4-door Yaris was homologated, but to get a 2 door body shell, lowered roofline, and lightweight doors, hatch, hood, and roof on the racecar they needed to homologate a car with those features. That's the homologation special.
Granted, they could've skipped the AWD and given it whatever engines the bog standard Yaris has on offer, since those could be modified from the road car anyway. But they decided we deserved better and probably also that no one was going to buy a low roofline 2 door Yaris making 120 hp.

Also, some of it is nostalgia. I believe that prior to the mid 90s many production-based series were stricter about what could be modified for the race cars. For example, when WRC was using Group A I don't think teams could change the drivetrain layout-- if the team wanted AWD the homologated car needed to have AWD. So we got some very special production cars that never would've happened otherwise.
Homologation specials then were a bigger deal than now, since the more restrictive (RE modifications from production) regulations meant the homologated road car would necessarily be closer to the race car than these days.
The major difference between the Yaris and most other homologated cars is it spent a large amount of time with TMR being built as a rally car, to their specifications. They actually wanted an even steeper drop on the back for aero, but that was one of the few things Toyota pushed back on apparently.
We can argue if they build a WRC car for the road, tbh, they didn't, but they certainly built a rally car for the road and no one has been doing that since some of the older Evo and WRX's

I'm not too fussed about the homologation label personally but I do like the idea of a small, Japanese hand built, 4wd, light(ish)weight hot hatch.

Jumped on these boards as I have been waiting on a GRY since July 21. Have "ordered" a white GRY with Con pack but am getting NO responses from the dealership about timelines etc. Only when I threatened to cancel did I get "Eta on the GR Yaris is around Dec as they keep going back" (not sure what "keep going back" means).
Reading this thread has got me worried that I may be waiting for eternity. Is there a URL for looking at any official waiting list or are these dealer specific? I've emailed Toyota direct with my dealership order number (don't think this is the official order) to see what they say. This is my first experience buying a new car, not a pleasant one so far.
Any observations or advice will be gratefully received.

Tricky. If you ordered in July 21 then it should have been built by now and makes me think the dealer messed up.
I would call (rather than email) Toyota direct and have a stern word with them. A lot of peeps were offered cancelled orders on the back of a call.= as long as you're not fussy about colour/spec.
When in July did you order? The book closed early July and a waitlist introduced on 8th July. If it’s after that date I doubt you have a car due.
On a positive note, check for a KA or I suspect a KB order number if you let us know what it is we can advise on what others have been told. If you don’t have this number get on the phone straight away to your dealer and get it. If they don’t give you it then again you don’t have a build slot.
Some KB orders have now been told May 23 delivery so not in build yet.
Wow! Seems like the factory has slowed down considerably. I wonder if the GRC is playing a part in production delays.

I’ve got a KB5 and have just been told latest is March build and May delivery. Every month it seems to go back a month. Can’t believe the forecasting has been so far out. Originally told to expect May 22 delivery, but “would probably be sooner”!!
