GR86 What did you do with your GR86 today

Was great meeting you and your GR86, @tyu

I had a great drive home in the BRZ on quiet roads, too :)

Awesome photos. This time of year is great for car shots. Be sure to submit one in the October photo competition ;)

Just back from the second of two week long breaks both in Denmark, one on the island of Langeland the second on Bornholm. While neither are typical driving nirvanas both had one thing in common, lots of back roads winding their way around fields often with nice 90 degree turns for tail waggles. A real benefit is the lack of hedges to give you clear sight of any oncoming hazards. Could recommend either if anyone plans a Scandinavian tour with a partner who would like some downtime.

As my wife had just had surgery, the second week majored on her recuperation. This gave me time to do some bits on the car, first I topped up the XPEL ceramic / PPF coating. This was well overdue but I am super happy with the results. Second I removed the v bars to try it out. I know I am 2 years behind! What was interesting was that without knowing my wife noticed in her back the deterioration in ride and the extra jiggle. They had to go straight back on! I also managed to capture some GoPro footage of my gearbox problems after a clutch and release bearing change delivered no improvement. I feel better armed for my second service now next week! It will soon be time to put the car away for the winter months.

Gratuitous photos. I love the look of this car more and more, and it photographs so well!

Changed the 48Ah OEM Panasonic Battery in the GR86, for a slightly more robust Bosch one at 60Ah and 540Cca. Tried in vain to get the tightening torques from Google whilst doing the job, but it came back with "There isn't a single published "official" torque specification for Toyota GR86 battery terminal bolts..." and suggested something like 10-15Nm. I went with 8 on the terminals and 10 on the retainer coz the battery was a bit 'slidey' after cleaning the plastic tray ... 😬

Once back inside on the PC I had chance to search through my files a bit and ... Ackchooly, Mr 'Know-it-all' AI search engine, there is a specified tightening torque for the GR86 Battery Terminal Bases, as well as the Battery Retainer/Holder. Here's a screenshot from the maintenance manual for those with a passing interest ... :geek:

Battery Holder = 3.5Nm
Battery Terminals (Both) = 6Nm.

Amazon’s “will this fit guide” is generally woeful in my experience. Purchased replacement wiper blades (Bosch aero twin) in the correct size and it was adamant they wouldn’t fit.

Not looked at battery replacement, but can see why you would want to, out of interest did you look at AGM variants, given the benefits these have over wet design?

I did, but I wanted exactly the same dimensions as the OEM battery and other formats were either an incompatible size, wrong terminal configuration or the delivery lead time wouldn’t have it get here before the car went into storage.

Bosch S4025. Got it from Amazon for £63. The Amazon guide stated "This does not fit Toyota GR86 Coupe", well it's identical size to the OEM unit with the same layout says I - so yeah it did fit. ;)

Good job.
I haven't had any issues with mine but then again mine doesn't hibernate.
In fact, at some point i will get a LiFePO4 Battery, finding the right one is the tricky bit and I believe I have to use a local retailer as batteries are banned for personal imports.

You should try entering BRZ 2023 into UK Amazon. You can't! I have to pretend it's a GR86 to get Amazon to play nice, but I agree that its fit/doesn't fit algorithm is broken.

The bonnet struts I bought from Amazon work well.

Took the 86 round knockhill yesterday, enjoyed the day - quite a few red flags, but nothing major of note, mostly easily towed mechanical issues.

Oil cooler next on the list to fit and my tyres are definitely on their way out, a good day out. Had friends with a GRY and Supra so we had the trifecta out, fair few yarises on the track. Just couldn't nail the hairpin!
