GR86 What did you do with your GR86 today

I got this one….

It cost around £170, but with postage and VAT it came in at £275.

Same one is £360 plus delivery from Fensport.

You can stop wondering. Any way to restrict movements of the steering gear works.
Thanks. Definitely something I'm interested in doing. One further question - do you find that it makes driving the car more tiresome on the highway? If you are isolating the bushes, that will make the the steering very direct and responsive, but I wondered if the downside is if that might make the car a little hyperactive when cruising at high speeds.

@Grblue86 - same question for you and the Cusco kit. Any issues with motorway driving? I'd like it more direct but don't want to sacrifice being able to cruise comfortably, which is why I might start with just the stiffer bushings and longer bolts instead of rigid lockout kits.

Sorry as I've missed it. What longer bolts for what?
Maybe best explained in the video GrBlue86 posted. It's for the GT86 but apparently fitment is the same. Specific timestamp link:

Basically, the bolts which hold the steering rack thread into the subframe, but not very far. I'm guessing the subframe is kind of a steel box section, so there will be some deflection possible when the rack is under load. STI make longer bolts which go all the way through the subframe and clamp it more securely from the other side. From a bit of reading around, this is apparently what the first gen BRZ tS model was fitted with to improve it's steering response.

I did 2x 60mile journeys on the M25. I had no issues whatsoever and never felt like the steering was too busy.
BTW, this is the link to the STI steering bolts: https://www.japanparts.com/parts/detail/?id=47821

Thanks, I've already got them in my shopping basket (along with the bushes.... https://www.japanparts.com/parts/detail/?id=43136) - but I'm holding off ordering for now. It can take a couple of weeks for stuff to arrive from Japan, and I'm abroad in two weeks time. So I'll order them while I'm away ready for when I get back. Hopefully the weather will be a little warmer when fitting them then, too.

Car gave me a warning on the dash yesterday to let me know the battery in the key needed replacing. Nice little touch. Means I can use the one I found mysteriously tucked into the owners handbook when I picked it up w years ago.
I changed the fob battery a couple of days after this post, even though the fob had been working fine. Figured it was best to do it just in case, rather than being annoyed when the fob dies completely.

Today, parked up, shut off the car..."Ding! Fob battery low" on the dash again. So either the replacement battery was also low, or the warning is not to be trusted :/

Try cleaning the battery with rubbing alcohol. Key fob batteries can be coated with a bitterant to make children spit them out. This affects performance in certain electrical items.

Thanks. Might try that although the warning hasn't appeared since, despite two more trips in the car.

Seeing as it's Valentine's day, I took the love of my life to Whitby, just the 2 of us.
She reminded me to treat her with a bit more respect, not rush her through tight corners in 3rd gear when it's 3 deg C outside. 😮
Tucked up warm and dry in the garage again now.❤️

Had the second service (a few weeks late), oil filter was in stock, I had two cups of coffee, three biscuits and got a funky key ring from the young lady on the service desk, who loved the colour of my car. I felt sorry for her, she had one of those bZ4ZzzzzzR* electric things right in front of her desk, seeing a GR86 must've made her day :D

Two weeks of commuting on the A66 around Teesside (with a few country lanes where available) meant the car was properly minging, so remedied that and took the opportunity to get some more paint protection on whilst it stayed dry. Soft99 coating on the windscreen too. When will the weather actually start looking like spring?
Original wheels and tyres in the back ready to drop off to the 'Wheel Specialist' on Monday. Rubber for the trash (don't think I've been through a set of tyres so quickly).

Surprised I haven’t seen your car yet! I have the same colour just down the road at Ingleby Barwick!

Installed another part that Toyota said was fitted at the factory, but wasn't - auto dimming mirror.

I know that a few people have already done this in the UK, but it's a little tricky as our cars don't have the power connector readily available in the headlining behind the interior lights. So you need to run your own wires to the fusebox. Always intended to do this myself, but had trouble trying to source the mirror so never got around to it.

But there's a guy on the US forums, Hachi Electronics, who runs an online shop and does quite a few electrical mods. Not only does he source the right mirrors and sell them on, but he also makes an international wiring loom which will get the power from the ASC connector behind he glovebox. It's provided as a passthrough so you can keep the ASC turned on if you wish. But even if you've disabled the ASC system, the connector is still powered, so it's a nice elegant solution for anyone who doesn't like dabbling in electronics. Not only that, but the connectors he supplies also include a USB socket which can be used to power a dashcam or something if you need it. There's even a little plastic trim piece which attaches to the windscreen to hide the wire running from the mirror to the headliner.

He does source the mirrors second hand or from salvage cars, so they aren't brand new, and therefore may come with some wear. But if you're worried he does offer to photo any items he sends so you can make sure you're happy. I didn't bother and mine turned up fine; just a couple of dirt marks on the glass which cleaned off no issue.

Install was pretty easy, under an hour. A little tricky because you have to run the wiring from the glovebox and also pull the headliner down a little. Take off the bit of trim just in front of the interior lights and there's two screws. Undo those and then unclip the panel holding the lights/SOS thing. You should then see two white clips which hold the headliner in place. I got a trim removal tool behind there and prised them out which gave me just enough room to tuck the connector from the mirror under the front of the headliner, as well as the Hachie power wire which I'd run from the glovebox, up the A-pillar, and tucked along the leading edge of the headliner. Then it was just a case of connecting it all up, tucking the wiring away neatly and putting it all back together :)

Until it gets dark I can't really verify the auto dimming feature, but the mirror powers on and the compass shows up, so no reason to assume it wont. The mirror itself looks a little more high end than the OEM one....thinner bezel and I'm sure it's slightly larger offering a better view.

So although he's not on these forums, a big recommendation to use Hachi Electronics if you're after a ready made solution. Link below, just make sure you select "2nd Generation 6 MT w/o Eyesight" and set the vehicle region to "International" so he'll send you the longer power lead. I ordered on the 30th January and it arrived this morning, so just over two weeks - not at all bad considering I think it's a one man operation and it's coming from the US. Total cost was £154 and there were no customs charges to pay (or at least, the postman handed it over without mentioning any).

Also, as well as the air freshener, a little bonus in the box... :D

Nice!!

I got an auto-dimming mirror via an eBay link which yes I had to run wires to the fuse box to fit. If I recall it cost me around double too.

Yours has the compass as well.. jealous!

A word of warning though, check that the cables running down the A-pillar are behind the airbags rather than in front. God forbid that they are ever used, but you don't want a cable blocking the airbag. I made that mistake and only realised when I took the A-pillar trim off to fit some AliExpress "alcanta" stickers.

How easy is the A-pillar trim to remove? Mine rattles quite annoyingly and I suspect it may be the cable for the aut-dimming mirror, would like to take a look.

Yup, I made sure to run them more toward the windscreen edge so they shouldn't foul the airbag.
And yes...I'm sure the mirrors I did see were more expensive than what I paid for just the mirror. Mind you, I guess they are brand new parts.

Very easy. Just get a plastic trim removal tool in between the A-pillar and the rubber bit (nearest the door frame) and it unclips quite readily. But don't pull it off completely...it has wires and stuff attached to the inside (for the airbag). But if you unclip it, you can easily get behind it and inspect. Then it just pushes back into place when you're done, just make sure to run a tool along the rubber strip again to make sure it overlaps.
