It might be worth skimming through the rest of this thread. This doesn't work on this car as Toyota didn't fit any alarms to the car.

Someone (3 masked yobs) attempted to enter my property just a few weeks after I got the GR86. Thankfully they were unsuccessful, but let’s be honest, if they are determined enough they’d get in - and tbh, if they did, I’d rather they just took the car than be stabbed for the key to a wheel lock or whatever else.
 
On the theft side, old fashion joy rides have to be the big fear.

I’d not want a car back if it had been in the hands of dudes that has stressed the car to near death.
 
I'd imagine joyriders would be more interested in a fast Audi or similar. Something that's easier to drive and allows 4-5 occupants a quick getaway on their toes when the driver runs out of talent during a police chase.
 
I don't think our cars are particularly attractive to thieves....famous last words...lol.

They are after top end stuff, Range Rovers are being stolen hourly, and Porsches and supercars.

Most of them don't even know what a GR86 is.

Either they steal cheap stuff for a joyride, a fast 4wd Golf R, Audi S3 etc for a bank job, or top end stuff like Range Rovers and Mercs, BMWs to strip or export for parts.
 
Had a response from TFS which is not wholly satisfactory. They have partially upheld my complaint but both sides of their story contradict each other. On one hand Toyota are saying that they can't advise if a third party unit can be fitted, but will give me the option of rejecting the car. TFS on the other hand are saying I can't reject the car but will give me a goodwill gesture of £100 towards an aftermarket alarm. Arse and elbow springs to mind.

I think you are the only one to get more than just words out of them. TFS I think just want to give you £100 to save them on paperwork and the loss of income (interest). TGB, don't give a $hit and just want you to reject. At the end of the day, they are different businesses.
 
Has anybody actually managed to have an aftermarket alarm fitted? The only one that I understood was potentially in scope as to be able to be coded with the GR86, was produced by Scorpion (I think...) - that being said and when I approached the fitter again about this today, they didn't really want to try fitting it as they weren't convinced it could be coded :rolleyes:.

Thanks for that info. I am going to get an alarm fitter to take a look at the car too and get a quote if possible.

I also have the option of the financial ombudsman too as I am not satisfied with the initial offer from TFS, so I am going to look into that if I can't get TFS to up their offer. £100 will barely buy some fake "alarm" stickers for the windows.

They are different businesses but I guess they all come under the Toyota umbrella so it is just a matter of which pieces of the pie contribute what to total profits.

I don't know if any others with TFS have put in a complaint but if you haven't then please do so as the more that do the more likely we are to get a result. Although TFS have not fully caved in they have partially upheld the claim so the more pressure we can create collectively the better.

Actually and thinking some more about it, I think it was a Cobra alarm. I knew it was some kind of venomous thing :rolleyes: I approached an alarm fitter a couple of months ago with my query when it became apparent the car had no alarm. Back then, the fitter was confident that it could be coded - but look to have rowed back on that confidence today when I approached them again with a view to putting wheels in motion as to fitment.

I'm going to put a claim through the small claims court. I paid for mine in full so don't have TFS to put pressure on.

The alarm is by Cobra. Unless Cobra themselves have the codes to do it, the unit cannot be programmed to work with the GR86. The programming codes are not something the fitter can figure out.

I like the Cobra solution as you get to keep the factory remote key and just carry an passive fob with the keys. Without the fob, the car won't start, so doubles up as safety for the keyless repeater theft.

Yeah I think the term is CANBus coding and I believe the Cobra Alarm is the only one that is potentially in scope for use with the GR86. Nobody appears to have done it yet though, so it remains to be seen if it can be done. The fitter had some sort of list of cars that could be coded - the GR86 wasn't on the list :rolleyes:
