GR86 Reducing Front End Noise

Thanks for the update. Not conclusive then but hopefully an improvement. I did back to back runs with and without the standard bars along the same route and I could definitely notice the difference, in the ride as well as the noise. But as you say, when you add all the postage, vat etc the aftermarket bars are a bit on the pricey side.

I had to go into the office today, which meant longer on the motorway and a chance to drive some roads that I know are a bit rough in places. Think I can be a bit more conclusive and say that there is an improvement. The car is quieter on the motorway; there's less hum coming from the firewall. I think I must have not been tuned to it before, especially as I have an aftermarket exhaust - but when concentrating on the road noise, I could tell something had changed. I think for those of you who really have noticed the resonance, it would be a bigger improvement.

However for me, the most noticeable improvement is the way the car rides surface imperfections now. To my ear, it definitely sounds much less harsh whenever the wheels are hitting small potholes, manholes, tarmac repairs, things like that. Don't get me wrong, it's not like it's transformed the car into a luxury cruiser, you can still feel these things. But as the front wheels hit them, it just sounds more muted, as though less of the impact noise is being transmitted into the cabin. Not exactly Rolls Royce, but at least a little bit less cheap, rattly sports car.

I intentionally straddled the markings on the motorway a little longer when making lane changes today, and whereas hitting cat's eyes used to be very noisy, with a kind of 'ker-chunk' as you rolled over them, now it just feels more like a 'thump'. And I made sure to roll over a couple of manholes covers on my usual route, which I know are sunken slightly. I could still feel them, but I winced much less than I usually would after hitting them. The car just felt a little more 'solid'. So there is definitely something about the design of the Nameless bars which is transmitting less noise from the wheels to the cabin firewall, whether that be due to the mounting design, or the material and construction.

When I got home, I re-fitted the stock bars as I'm due in the office tomorrow. So I will drive the same route and see if I can confirm they are noisier compared to the Nameless ones...if I'm not going mad and still think they are, I'll swap back to the Nameless.

They are still expensive for what they are, but I would say if you are desperate for an improvement and have tried other things, they are worth a shot.

Drove to work today and pretty sure there is a noticeable difference. In fact, as I was coming along the M25 and keeping my ears peeled, I hit a section of asphalt where I immediately noticed a resonance coming from the front wheels. I didn't notice it on yesterday's drive when I was also trying to listen for changes.

And in a weird coincidence, I was browsing Reddit this morning and found another post by someone who has pretty much the same experience - a feeling that the Nameless braces tighten up the front end and make it quieter over bumps. Interestingly mentions that the conical mounting points probably add some 'preload' to the bars, whereas the stock bars rely entirely on the mounting nuts/bolts tightening them down. Perhaps that explains the improvement.

Thanks conscript. This is really helpful.

I wonder if these would work well then as they appear to have tensioners which could be used to apply some preload.

For anybody that's considering getting them but isn't in a rush, it looks like they'll have 10% off for black friday.

Good shout. Especially as import fees were about 40 quid. But also bear in mind they are built to order, which took about a month.

Almost a couple of weeks later now. I've done more miles, and also did a long motorway drive last weekend (Norfolk and back) and I think I'm more prepared to say there is an improvement. I suddenly found myself realising that the car was just a bit more refined and quiet on the road. Definitely less 'thump' from the front wheels over road studs and asphalt sections. Nothing revolutionary, but one of those things where you suddenly notice the absence of noise you'd previously got used to. A high price, but worth it if you've found road noise especially bothersome.

I also notice that Nameless have cottoned on to how popular they are; they've updated the description to highlight that it specifically reduces road noise. Don't remember if it said that when I purchase them.

I finally got around to fitting the Nameless braces at the weekend. Took it out for a drive today and immediately noticed a difference. The annoying pinging noise I used to get from rough roads had gone. There is also a significant reduction in noise from the front at higher speeds and no discernible difference in steering feel. I did put a small square of 2mm silent coat under the suspension end as well, just for good measure. The best way I can explain the impact on my car is that I never noticed any noise from the rear or doors before, because the front was so loud. Now the noise from the boot is a bit intrusive. 🤷‍♂️😂

Been running with the nameless bars for a while now, everything else is stock and what a difference, done a couple of couple of 2 hour drives on all surfaces and speeds and very happy with the reduction of noise. Motorways especially. My wife welcomes the improved cabin noise comfort so win-win!

Please note the lack of u-tube language, such as game changing, awesome, the best thing I have bought, use of capital letters and punctuation to excess.

I still don't understand. Can you post a thumbnail of you with a shocked expression on your face and some clickbait text?
Ah how could I omit this very obvious inclusion of a stupid facial expression on a thumbnail overlayed onto what would usually be a good picture of a nice car, with a caption in a mixture of caps and loads of explanation marks.:LOL:

Fixed it for you @Gibbo78:

Even if the engije braces were labelled like that, i bet your average dealership would still struggle to know what they were.
