GR86 Insurance

If you're with Admiral, login to your account, manage renewal, thinking of leaving...

Go through the tick boxes and click I'm still unhappy then it just spits out a discount. Already at 34% increase now rather than 45%

In my experience it's always worth to speak to as many insurers / brokers that you can and not just via online quotes and comparison sites. You have @HowdenSpecialistInsurance who are active on the forum, who are specialists in performance and modified cars.

So well worth a call and if it's not for you, at least you tried.

You'll also be chatting to people interested in what you drive and not just a robot in a call centre.

I've just been through the rigmarole of phoning insurers, comparison sites etc, after my renewal came in at £2,150. I paid £680 (pro-rata) this year.

Admiral have come out the "cheapest" at £720.

It appears some insurers view the GR86 as a "leisure" vehicle and won't insure it with an annual mileage of 8-10k.

I do loathe having to call insurers to get a quote compared to just plugging details in online. Especially those that ask for details up front, then call you to go through the same details on the phone only to get a quote that's either too high, or where they just won't insure you.

I just ended up raising my traditionally small excess a bit to get the premium back to where I want.

I'll not be claiming for anything for a few hundred quid anyway so shouldn't make any difference really.

Thanks for this. I followed your advice and managed to bring it down from under £1100 (55% increase) to just under £950 (35% increase).

For reference, my original was around £700, but I've since had a fair few mods installed and declared over time, which are reflected in this price increase.

I had to tweak my excess from voluntary £0 to £150 (total £500) to get this price.

Dropping my wife from the policy would have saved another £180... :ROFLMAO:

I will still try a couple of specialist insurers (including Howden), but at least I can rest now, knowing I don't need to trim my car back to stock any time soon 😅

AA - £466 last year, renewal quoted at £797. Searched via Quidco and ended up with Churchill; higher voluntary excess than last year, but have added in UK breakdown cover; £508 less £45 Quidco cashback = £464 = :)
The cars have breakdown xover inside the TUK warranty, so why double cover?

Had a bit of a nightmare with comparison sites on Thursday trying to rush through cover so that I could pick up the car tomorrow.

I was finding that once they directed me to the site and I was doing the last checks before payment there had been significant and ridiculous changes to the price and cover originally quoted.

I saw prices suddenly jump (once they transferred over to the provider) by up to 25% (“your new quote is”) with no explanation, excess suddenly changing from £250 to (confused.com) to £1750, key data entered being changed (even “where is it stored” and “ when did you obtain your licence) - no notice whatsoever - lucky I checked.

Got it sorted but you really have to check the details.

New and approved used cars come with 12 months breakdown cover - after 12 months it's £89 pa for the Toyota scheme through the AA, or you sort elsewhere.
£89 renewal would be good value if you intend to take your GR on a holiday over the Channel as it includes European Breakdown cover, but for me a basic UK Roadside Breakdown cover will be sufficient for the next year, so a £30 add-on to the standard Churchill policy is a better deal.

That happened to me too, very annoying.

I ended up getting a much better deal with Admiral.

I had a similar experience to many - the current insurer almost doubled the price this year :( . I shopped around and added another 100 to the excess and brought it in for less than last year in the end. £303:)
Hi, Which insurer did you use this time around?
