GR Yaris (Gen 2) GR Yaris Mk2 (MY2024->)

I'm quite fond of the MK2 overall, yet I believe the front end design of the MK1 appears more proportional and aesthetically pleasing.

Some comparison shots I stole from Insta:

Watch the Carwow video, it shows some detailed drawings
you mean this - it doesn't say what cooler they are.
though radiator -> water cooler?

my guess is that new sub radiator doesn't cool enough on serious track use but stand to be corrected..

I've rolled the dice this morning and sold my car - fingers crossed I'll get an allocation. 🤞
Exceptional decisiveness 👌
Out of interest, will you be back in the market if you can't get a Mk2, or would you be looking outside the world of GRY?

I can agree that the Mk1 front is more harmonic so to speak but the Mk2 isn't bad either but I guess it depends on the angle you are looking at it.
For example on this picture it looks pretty good I have to say. I like that the additional radiators are clearly visible.

They also really sprayed GR-Four on the intercooler. That's 100% Japanese style and I absolutely love stuff like that.

Lastly I absolutely love this grey color. I already loved it on the Rally2 car and thought to myself I would really love that on the road car and well here we are.

This is the issue for me. With the original GR – Toyota designed a car that looks really timeless/aggressive/well resolved.

They've basically addressed a lot the technical issues but have introduced a bunch of aesthetic issues. I can't remember many criticisms of the Gen 1 styling. But I can't see this new version being universally loved.

The new grill on a white car just looks like an old GR with crash damage – like a dog with a big stick in it's mouth. The lines are all wrong – that downward sloped shape of the sub radiator housing ruins the flow. Despite having a wider area of blackness, the front of the car now looks narrower.

The shapes inside the cabin are just all over the place – rounded/square/circular. Looks like a parts bin special – it's bodged and rushed.

If they'd have made the functional improvements without ruining the design, I'd be all over it. Just look at the actual Rally 1 and 2 cars. They look beautiful and they're obviously of utmost functionality.

As a designer, I can almost guarantee that whoever styled the original isn't happy with this update. At the end of the day it's all very subjective. But if you're buying this new model, I'd stick to dark grey or black (might be the reason they bothered to introduce grey, actually).

Yes, when I make a decision that's it, no regrets (hopefully).

If the Mk2 doesn't happen, then I'll probably buy another Mk1 later in the year - no plans to look for alternatives.
Mk2 would be the grey and automatic, just for something completely different.

out of curiosity, would be fun to know if same designer did the mk1 or has there been a change in order for mk2?
Same feelings there that even though not a designer as such, feel that there has been little blunt approach in terms of lines and flow. though this afternoon the cabin did not look that horrible anymore vs. this morning so maybe it just takes time to get used with it.

My tuppence...

Lower seat - dreamy.

Bit more power - nice.

Auto box - would be novelty and I'd love to have a go, but people I know with DSG Golfs etc. say they miss a manual, and I think I would too.

Dash doesn't do it aesthetically for me, better as it may be for those few who use race harnesses.

The styling tweaks kind of look nice now but that's always the case when facelifts come out. I think it's also usually the case is that a facelift doesn't stand the test of time in the same way as the original design does.

Overall clearly impressive incremental improvements and I'm not saying it isn't objectively better in many respects, but I still feel really good about my mk1, and I reckon it'll still be the one to have in the long run :)

If you can all please vote on how you would like us to integrate GR Yaris Mk2 content on the forum.

It can be displayed as a completely separate model, so you would have a GR Yaris section and a GR Yaris Mk2 section with sub-forums for Engines, Wheels, Owners cars etc or we can tag it onto the existing GR Yaris forum like it is now - but longer term this method will be harder to filter and find the content you are looking for.

Cheers

Are you sure that last bullet shouldn’t read q4 32?
