GR Yaris (Gen 2) GR Yaris Mk2 (MY2024->)

The MK1 launch was all about this crazy story that Toyota was losing cash on every GR Yaris they made. Some journalists said it, and people bought it, even though it was probably a bunch of bull. Maybe for the MK2, they’ll come up with another whopper, like they’re trying to make back the money they supposedly lost on the MK1.

It was a load of bull.

This ain't Toyota's first rodeo; they know how to make cars, and how to make money doing it. They absolutely made a profit, and could see the Corolla, Rally 2 car, this new model, Lexus spin-off etc. leveraging off their initial investment. The brand cachet they have built with enthusiasts like us over the past few years could pay dividends for decades though.

Just look at the affection people have for 90s rally reps or 80s hot hatches, even if most of the relevant manufacturers have long since abandoned those segments, or at least their original principles. Whether there is even an 'enthusiast market' for new cars in 2040, who knows? But I for one am glad Toyota are ploughing their own furrow here.

Their margins may have been slimmer than the bean counters would have preferred, but it was/is a passion project and for that we can only only be grateful 🙏 because in this day and age it is vanishingly rare in volume automotive production.

Toyota will go down in history together with a few other manufacturers as those who tried everything they could at the tail end of exciting cars, and I am happy to be a supporter of that.

Normally CEOs aren't the kind of people who you associate with fun but he is just built different. Doing stunts like showing up with his custom GRMN Century.

Without him none of the GR or Lexus F models would have ever been made. Just look at how dreary Toyota was in the early 2000s before he took charge. Still one of the biggest and best carmakers in the world without a doubt but hardly something you would call exciting.
 
Sorry but I'm not a fan at the moment.

Dash in my opinion is absolutely horrendous! My 24 year old Evo 6 had a better dash! 😔😄.. Looks like it's out of an old Citroen!

Lowered seat.... I fixed that issue a year ago with a dna kit. £300.. Sorted.

Mirror too low... Fixed that issue...£30.
Extra 20bhp more power.... Most have more than that Now.
Front bumper looks better on previous car imo.

Same brakes, same suspension, same alloys.

Metal grille and brake light look better tho.

Sorry... I'm more than happy with Mine. 👍😎😁..
 
I'll be happy to stick with mine I think, it's small changes that I don't think add up to enough to warrant swapping what I have.

As others have said, it's good they're still producing ICE performance cars when other brands have already given up.

I think it looks good. Looks more rally style. The whole car looks better in my view and they have done enough to make me want another. Be interesting to see how they get allocated. Buying online with the gr86 was not the best experience.

I think they've done well listening to customers and making improvements to the ergonomics and chassis. I like how they've changed the front grille for a reason (to accommodate new rads) and not just for the sake of it. I actually quite like the 80s rally inspired cockpit, it's a bit odd looking at first but I'm sure it's an ergonomic improvement, along with the seating and steering wheel/mirror changes. The engine changes for the Corolla being adopted is also great.

Minor gripes, but I don't like:
The body coloured rear spoiler - it now looks like the spoiler has been nicked off the hybrid standard Yaris.
The car has lost its mouth, I love the grille on the Mk1 and it's been smudged into a big mass, it's not terrible, just not as well resolved.
All the talentless nobheads will buy the auto and give the car a bad rep. There will be lots going into ditches I imagine, hopefully anyway ; )
That there will potentially be a lot more on the roads, making the car less special.
My car will feel obsolete for a while, while the new one is being sold, but then it won't make a difference long term.
Don't really care about the residuals for now, as not planning to sell, but will be a little annoying if it tanks.

Overall I'm pleased that Toyota are still making great ICE performance cars, and this new one will undoubtedly hoover up the Car of the Year awards 2024.

I mean plenty have been put into ditches already so I doubt we will notice a difference.
