I understand the debate about whether the car is worth the money or not or that there’s others out there for the same money but regardless what keeps these going on the price is these opportunities to own new or nearly new types of car are going to become fewer and fewer in years to come. Less and less manufacturers are willing to commit to these types of projects and more and more will have higher mileage, more owners and their history becomes blurred pushing the genuine, well looked after, sought after lower mileage ones up. Also comparing them to other “similar” cars on the market they’re significantly more money (new), golf R, type r, S3 etc without the bespokeness which you get more of in the mk2. I had both, a very low mileage mk1 and made the jump extremely quickly to a mk2 as I got the opportunity so I lost a bit of money but I’m very happy I did. No it’s not worth twice the mk1 but it’s definitely worth a bit more. There’s definite improvements. Regardless of all these things are considerably more expensive now than they were 3 years ago it’s just the way of the world and I expect in another 3 years these “entry” level high performance cars will have a new much higher entry level price. If you have the opportunity and can do so bite the bullet now because I think you might regret not doing so in a few years.
