I’m kind of the opposite to
@workpermit I had a 22 plate mk1 with just 500miles on it bought for a very reasonable sum, I think £33.5 at the time but really wanted a mk2 due to the bespoke interior, I have always felt the interior of the mk1 is very Yaris basic, you can sit in any Yaris of the same year and it’s the same. I get to some this is very minor. But was granted the opportunity to get a mk2 just a few weeks later so flipped the mk1 500miles and a service later and went all in.
Don’t regret it one bit. Genuinely prefer the look and subtle improvements to the mk2 like front bumper, as more aggressive, rear light bar and interior with wireless Apple car play etc, the updates make a difference in my opinion. Also depends what you plan to do with the car. I wanted to keep mine relatively standard so the extra power different power band and stiffness is noticeable.
If you plan to keep it relatively stock mk2 is an improvement. If you plan to go to town on it with coilovers, exhaust, induction, remap rear seat delete, strutt braces etc then mk1 for sure.
I also think the 10-15k price difference will seem significantly less in the future. Fact cars are more expensive we need to accept that you won’t get another new car with the same characteristics for less than the current new price and that is only going to rise. I mean a fully kitted new Audi A1 is now £35.2k OTR. You can not compare this to a mk1 back in 2022. The world has changed.
Also how much do you value being the first owner, knowing how the car was run in, knowing whether it’s been treated as you want to treat it. As an enthusiast I suspect these things matter to you as they did to me. It was always in the back of my mind has someone redlined this before its first oil change or run in period? Because there’s a lot of people that just don’t care. I know a guy that bought a M8 compitition brand new and launched it 5 minutes after leaving the show room. It’s insane what people do and what they tell you.
