GR Yaris (Gen 2) GR Yaris Mk2 (MY2024->)

Just had a BCC email from dealership offering a new GR, either manual or auto, arriving in June. They’re looking for a £2k deposit, first come first serve.

Weird they didn’t have anyone for this already.
Dealers were told not to take deposits so I suspect many didn’t bother with a list. The June slots will be a few £k More expensive due to tax.

I can only think it's the price, there are lots of nice cars out there for less or the same money. The Gen 1 was a good price and a very special ground braking 3 cylinder car. It had lots of publicity with car reviewers really bigging it up.

These will all sell quickly. Don’t forget Toyota UK didn’t allow dealers to sell cars and it was from the ballot run by themselves. They’ve then with no warning told dealers they have 2 cars to sell.

To me, that equates to, those who were offered the cars via the ballot didn't take up the opportunity. This has left Toyota with an unexpected surplus of the Gen 2 . Maybe they will drop the asking price.

Still haven’t been offered one…

On the flipside people I know who weren’t a Mk1owner nor entered the ballot but who test drove a Mk1 have been

It’s a very weird situation here.

For most of the last few years there have consistently been 10-20 GR Yaris on the main secondhand car sales site, and new cars were sold out and with waiting lists from well before the first deliveries, as with pretty much everywhere else.

Today there is precisely ONE original GR Yaris on that site and it’s a 2021 car with 25k km for €36k which is basically the same price as it was new 😳

However, there are also NINE new or pre-registered gen 2 cars for sale, most with under 50 km. This literally never happened with the original cars.

I can only assume that the higher gen 2 sticker price has made potential customers look more favourably on the much cheaper gen 1 cars and they have been snapped up, firming up the prices for the ones remaining.

I think this is it, combined with the much much higher cost of borrowing. Finance deals in the UK are at 9% on the Mk2

I think it was in this thread that we saw the number of MK1s on Autotrader go from 200->150 in a week once the pricing/finance was announced on the Mk2.

People realised it wasn't a good deal.

I don’t think this is the case. Toyota had a list 10-15,000 strong that was created when the mk1 came out peoples situations change, might have just added their name to the list for the fun of it, might not be interested in the mk2, can’t afford it.

The hours spent trawling the list must have cost thousands to Toyota or you just offer the very limited amount to dealers for them to deal with.

I notice that several nearly new mk1 cars with ultra low miles which had been advertised on auto trader for months disappeared over the last two weeks. I had been following it all quite closely as I was looking for a car.

We may be getting to the stage where people realise you cannot easily get a new one and the window of opportunity is closing fast to get a lightly used mk1

The cars on Collecting Cars have been bid decent money recently.

I have not seen a GR on the road for awhile and saw one last week at the FAT international ice race in zell am see. They look so right!

I had planned to be at Zell am see but I was there back at Easter so will go next year.

Ref low mileage cars some have appeared recently at £30k for sub 1,000 miles when people are trying to sell 10-15,000 miles cars for more but it’s winter and awkward time to buy for many.

I’ve seen FB posts in recent weeks of people buying brand-new MK1s. Yes, brand new. I’m not sure if these were from private sellers who never drove them or leftover stock from somewhere.

If I had €60K—or whatever these go for nowadays—just lying around, it would still be hard to justify spending twice as much on the MK2 if I could pick up a new MK1 for half, or just a little more than half, of that.

It won’t allow me to link the FB posts here, but if you search for “GR Yaris”, you’ll see two recent posts of folks buying brand new MK1’s in the UK group.

I understand the debate about whether the car is worth the money or not or that there’s others out there for the same money but regardless what keeps these going on the price is these opportunities to own new or nearly new types of car are going to become fewer and fewer in years to come. Less and less manufacturers are willing to commit to these types of projects and more and more will have higher mileage, more owners and their history becomes blurred pushing the genuine, well looked after, sought after lower mileage ones up. Also comparing them to other “similar” cars on the market they’re significantly more money (new), golf R, type r, S3 etc without the bespokeness which you get more of in the mk2. I had both, a very low mileage mk1 and made the jump extremely quickly to a mk2 as I got the opportunity so I lost a bit of money but I’m very happy I did. No it’s not worth twice the mk1 but it’s definitely worth a bit more. There’s definite improvements. Regardless of all these things are considerably more expensive now than they were 3 years ago it’s just the way of the world and I expect in another 3 years these “entry” level high performance cars will have a new much higher entry level price. If you have the opportunity and can do so bite the bullet now because I think you might regret not doing so in a few years.

Accounting for inflation it’s about the same list price but with higher interest rates and the increase in price I worked out the finance payment was roughly double what I paid for my GRY finance deal. So I would suspect the price this time around, whilst not unreasonable, is too much for many.

I didn’t go into the ballot for the facelift for that reason. My local dealer called me last week saying they had an allocation and are offering them to existing customers first. So either dealers now have some cars they’re allowed to sell or Toyota have been though the list and there hasn’t been a take up of build slots.
