GR86 Exhausts

I'm back to looking at HKS. The LEGAMAX might be for me, nice tone with sensible volume throughout the rev range. Also looks great!
Sounds quite similar to stock volume with better tones?

I have a technical request in with Toyota UK to hopefully clarify if the UK cars will have a GPF / EGF / OPF or whatever other acronym there is for one.
Forgive my ignorance - why does the GPF matter? Does it change which aftermarket exhausts we can fit?

Gas Particulate Filter.

it does change how the car will sound and the volume of it significantly. In some cases even slower cars performances.
For Example:
- GR Yaris for example. GR Yaris has 261 HP in Europe with an GPF equipped but 272 HP in Japan without one.
- Hyundai I30n had 109DB in the papers registered without gpf - 2 production years later "only" 91DB with GPF.
- Supra MK5 has more pops and bangs without a gpf and is a bit louder with better sound than the later updated version with GPFs installed.
colleague of mine drives one with GPF and his buddys supra is louder and has a nicer sound without GPF.

Performancewise i am pretty sure we wont have any issues because the car is listed with the same HP all over the world.
But the sound and the aftermarket possibilities and tuning results could defer very much from cars without GPF, if our EU version has one.

OPF is used here in germany as Otto Partikel Filter. GPF is the english term as Gasoline Particle Filter.
Others i am not used of

I see that's really useful - so it shouldn't affect fitment generally?

And perhaps if we get a gpf some us maybe want a slightly louder exhaust to compensate.

Found this video on my feed today, someone fitted the AWE Touring mentioned above and gave an overview.

Definitely seems a bit antisocial, although maybe it's just that cold start. Although pops and bangs would probably piss me off.

I wonder if it's possible to have the cold start mapped out without having to have a tune? Getting rid of it was a nice bonus when I had my GT86 with an Ecutek tune. But I probably wont be bothering with remapping the GR86, so I won't want to pay for a tune just to get rid of the cold start. But it would be nice to do if I fit a louder than stock exhaust.

I've hated cold starts for years - my E90 M3 cold start was bonkers loud - but would then settle to a nice burble in normal driving.

I'd code it out if I could.

Yeah far too anti social, doesn't really matter as we can't get it anyway.

Perrin 2.5 update from Perrin:

We are actively working on a 2.5” system that will be compatible with 2022+ models.............................It will be available in all markets, and we hope to have them in boxes by Sept 1 2022

Ask and you shall receive - many thanks to the Toyota Online team:

Official word is that the GR86's we are getting in UK will be fitted with a GPF. They were also kind enough to send me a pdf file showing all the parts of the exhaust system(s) used worldwide the for the GR86/BRZ. This shows GPF and non-GPF systems and also the shorter US spec muffler pipes due to their laws.

GR86 Exhaust System.webp

Given that the centre and rear sections (4 & 5) are identical between GPF and non-GPF exhausts I am hoping the "international exhausts" we've all been looking at on YouTube will fit. Whether they perform the same with a GPF ahead of them may be another question...?

I have also attached the full PDF I was sent.

Welp GG its been nice :D
But still, looking forward for aftermarket exhausts here in germany. Just have to play along with our strict TUV

I find a lot of american/jdm exhaust systems wayyy too much. It just a tromped on max volume on cold start like what ... :D I dont need the car very much louder. (although it will be very quiet in the EU version)
I just need a very nice sound note.

So I took 2 of my previous cars, an E90 M3 and an M135i to PCW exhausts.

He modifies the stock exhaust to free it up and unleash more sound, like a stock plus, nothing too loud.

Contacted him and he's done a few GR Yaris with good results, recons he can do something for the 86.

I may well go for this for a few hundred quid, and will post the results if I do.

Was very impressed with previous results, quality workmanship and sounded just right.

Keep us posted if you do, I'd be interested in that option.

Given that our cars have a gpf and 2nd cat on the front pipe, I reckon the awe touring exhaust might be actually quite good for our euro cars, given how good the gpf is at dampening decibels!

I've had the same thought. It's a tad too obnoxious on the US cars (especially the cold start), but with some over zealous UK-spec muffling it could be very nice!

Heard that our GR86 in Europe has less power than JDM GR86 because of the GPF and it doesn't have any solution to decode yet if it is removed.
