GR86 Exhausts

Did you ever find yourself an exhaust, biggie?

It seems you are one of only 2 people on the entire Internet referencing the exhaust gas temp sensor.

The other is cobra exhausts. On their website the listing for their manifold states, "Please note: this part does not include a sensor boss for the PPF sensor."

Until there's a catted UEL manifold with the port for the sensor, I'm probably going to stop mindlessly searching for one.
I guess the EGT sensor is for GPF regeneration adn management...

It's not that hard to weld a boss in to cover it, but its an extra step when you jsut want to fit new stuff.

I hate hate hate the GPF!

Don't forget the differential pressure sensor.

If you replace the front pipe you will throw a CEL.
I've still not seen a picture of one, I guess its like other vehicles where there are two pipes that come off and go to an externally mounted sensor?

I've seen "cheat pipes" that use the cat differential pressure to fool it.

Yeap, one of those.

Hi all, I've posted this on this thread below, but thought as this is a wider exhaust discussion, some might be interested: https://www.gr-zoo.com/threads/c-tec-gr-86-product-release-with-zoo-offer.7065/page-2#post-111795

An update from me, I had the @ctecperformance C-TEC cat back exhaust fitted by the very friendly and professional guys at C-TEC on the 5th Sept so I've had it a week+ and done several hundred miles with it including the drive back from the sunny (on the day!) C-TEC HQ in South Yorks back to Hampshire via London.
So my personal thoughts:
- Its build quality is exceptional, I dont know a lot about welding but its a shame to hide the exhaust under the car when the joints and material looked so nice.
- The guys at C-TEC are great, they know their stuff and really want you to be a happy customer, their enthusiasm for their own products but also cars in general is impressive, almost as impressive as the array of rare Japanese rally based cars (EVO TM, Impreza STi's etc)
- Long drive = zero drone, you are aware of the exhaust being there but its not intrusive or in any way loud, in fact the general road noise in the 86 is louder than the exhaust at 70-80mph, when under load at that speed there is the note coming through which you notice but its again not a drone.
- Low speeds/town - driving gently then there is just a subtle deeper pitch to the exhaust which means you can go down a high street without looking like you're on your way to a retail park McDonalds.
- On partial acceleration - A nice deeper sound, my favourite is 2,550-5,000 rpm where you get a nice growl that has elements of the flat 4 note to it which I really like. Above 5,500 the engine / induction sound probably equals the exhaust so its not a blaring top end but has a sporty sound.
- Warm idle - subtle sports note, bass and element of flat 4 rumble but wont upset neighbours and sounds good
- Cold start - loud, nothing can be done about that, it is what it is, for about 20 seconds there is a loud bass heavy blare from the exhaust while the car sorts itself out, then it drops down nicely to the warm idle levels.
- Spirited driving - spot on, has the low and mid range volume and tone that I wanted, make you feel like you're driving a sports car.

Summary:
Described to me as the 'goldilocks' exhaust, and I'd agree. It has added a 3rd dimension to the 86 which was sadly missing before, it has for the first time in 18 months of ownership made me find fun long ways home, and in itself elevated the enjoyment of the car from 'meh' to 'yeh'! I've been critical of the 86 as feel it has several flaws that drove me to the edge of selling it but the C-TEC has done more for the driving experience than the sum of the parts. Yes its not the cheapest one out there and I havent heard in person any others, but for me I am happy and feel its the sound the 86 should have always had. :)

p.s. the iphone recording of the exhaust didnt do it justice or sound alike so I will post some sound when its representative of the actual note/sound.

I had a Cobra non-resonated fitted a few weeks ago now, it’s transformed the car and finally given it the sound to match its performance! No drone anywhere in the rev range, you would barely know it’s there when sitting on the motorway at 70-80mph (did 3hrs to Leeds with my partner in the car and she didn’t complain which says something!). Not obnoxious around town either. On a back road it really comes alive though, great rich tone, and when it’s hot you can hear the exhaust spit on down changes which is epic! Gives it a Subaru-lite rumble on idle as well which is cool 😎

Ha much?

Does anyone have an AWE (either track or touring) or cobra non resonated exhaust near Bedfordshire?

Good review SJR. I have had my C-TEC system on for about 3 weeks now and have done plenty of miles over mixed routes including a 5 hour round trip. SJR kindly collected my system when he had his fitted and brought back down south. Another example of the great people on this forum helping one another. He a real gentlemen as well it was a pleasure to meet him.
I fitted the exhaust myself and the quality is superb top work from Nigel and his team. I was able to fit it all up just using my bare hands even for the exhaust hangar rubbers. It was a pleasure to work on nothing like some of the parts I have bought over the years. The whole process including searching my garage for tools putting the car up in the air, a bit of cleaning and putting everything away was less than3 hours. It really has transformed the car for me. No real difference when hitting the redline but so much nicer in everyday driving. I have disconnected the sound generator as well. SJR has done a top job for describing the sound so I won’t try to add to much to that. Sound is very subjective but at nearly 60 I was not looking to be getting a noise Asbo. It a little bit loud on cold start but quite fruity but once warm it not much different to stock at idle.
It does seem to allow me to enjoy heel amd toe a bit more as it seems easier to accurately match the revs. Not that I had that trouble as stock but still a nice little bonus. . There no drone or booming at any speed and it only very slightly noisier on the motorway. Not the cheapest option but a great quality product that you can see a lot of work and craftsmanship has gone into. Would definitely recommend. The car should have sounded like this from the factory.

Hi @GRpirate I meant to get in touch and see what you thought of the CTEC, great you're enjoying it and it was an easy fit. Also really nice to meet you and have a chat, it really does make the 86 much more enjoyable to drive, I do really like the mid range growl the most.

Hi SJR02

It all good I am loving it. Thanks again for your help

RIP ears.

Would it make that much of a difference with a GPF still in place? Seems the GPF robs the car of much of a voice, no matter what is fitted after it.

My non-res Milltek is definitely louder and has more of a note, but is still a bit quiet for me, especially higher up the rev range!

Maybe, hopefully...in the US at least, it's actually become a bit of a meme with people buying them and selling them for being far too loud...

I saw that and it prompted me to get off my bum and order something. Went full banzai with an AWE track edition!
I've got the touring. It's loud, but not crazily so.

However, the cold start is VERY loud. I hope you don't commute from a sleepy neighbourhood 😅
