GR86 Exhausts

Anyone sourced the “AWE Touring with black tips” from Torqen.co.uk

If so, would you recommend Torqen and what did you pay?

Thank you
Hi have the AWE Track not Touring and got mine from VIP Motorsport who are much cheaper than Torqen and were good on service, delivery and packaging(y)

I finally received my HKS Legamax Premium exhaust (same as @byebyeMX5) last week, at got it installed!

Its quite a bit bassier/boomier than I expected at low RPMs as the deep sound doesn't translate well in the smartphone videos I had seen. But just as I wanted, it gives the car more sound at those low RPM, allowing a little more boxer sound and just a deeper noise. At higher RPM on full throttle (over 4000) the sound is overshadowed by the engine, which I like.
It also gives a nice sound on overrun when you change gear at high RPMs, and some way more satisfying blipping sounds and a few pops as well.

It's still bedding in though, as I've only managed a little more than 300 km since it got installed.

Nonetheless, here is a cold start of it, as well as some pictures:

Finally Mr Hansen Sir it has arrived!!
It looks fantastic on red along with those wonderful wheels of yours, finishes your car off perfectly.
I see you have fitted the HKS filter which I haven't and to be honest cold start sounds the same as mine, it is louder than I expected to on cold start, I did start it and drive off and it set my neighbours car alarm off!! So I let it warm up now before setting off!!
At the risk of sounding like a BMW driver I have to ask what the item is next to the panel filter please?

Im not getting any pops on downshifts, I would term it more of a sneeze!! I suspect this is the stock air filter, on my IL Motorsport box on my 5 it livened up when I put a K&N filter in.

I must be at 3 or 4 K miles now on mine and it was definitely the right choice over the other options available....both in design, construction and as you say it's not obtrusive at all at high revs.

Actually the air filter isn't in yet, as I want to mount it together with the other part you noticed.
It's an Outbound Motorsport snorkel, 3d printed to look like the snorkel from the cup cars in the US.
When I get around to taking off the bumper, I'll mount that, the filter, and remove the resonator box, as the Outbound Motorsport kit also comes with a plug for where the resonator normally attaches to the airbox.

Regarding the exhaust, what I meant is that I CAN get pops out of it on a downshift, but it doesn't happen most of the time. The easiest way to make it pop is the same way as with the stock exhaust. When the exhaust is hot, while driving and IN GEAR (second or third for example), you push down the clutch and give the throttle som propper stabs, from low RPM. By doing this, even the stock exhaust made some pops, but they are a bit louder now.

Had the C-Tec Performance (@ctecperformance) exhaust fitted yesterday...

The car finally has sound from the exhaust 😁. Nigel and Charlie have created a great system that sounds amazing when you want it too but also nice and quiet when cruising on the motorway and around town if you keep the revs low.

Exhaust Questions from a Noob as it’s my first car that I want to modify! Not sure if this warrants a separate thread but

Been trawling the forums and internet about Exhausts, and answers are quite vague. Been wanting to press the trigger on a purchase of an exhaust but very cautious as I want to maximise warranty and any “blown up” issues in years time.

1. Does having a GPF back exhaust void warranty?
2. Does Without pop bang remap with exhaust void it? I know back pressure and combustion from exhausts can cause possible engine/piston damage?
3. Does a axel back exhaust like some HKS Legamax not void warranty ca GPF back?
4. Does a EC or TUV approved exhaust void warranty if there’s any issues down the line? Example: a EC approved Exhaust better?
5. Does having any exhaust modification that increases the noise level make it illegal in the UK? As you’re making the car sound louder than what it was designed from the factory?
6. How does it affect insurance in terms of claims or non payment? In case of any accidents? The UK has different laws than the freedom (right to do anything freedom states).
7. Are any exhausts beyond reproach when making any warranty or insurance claims?
8. If you blow up a FA24 motor (like 1 uk user has already), how can a dealer blame it on an exhaust modification?

Really thirsty for an exhaust but really conservative and don’t want to be out of pocket if anything was to happen. Help a brother out with the money pit that is a car …

Apologise for the “exhaustive” questions in advance thanks for the answers so far!

Re 1 - 5 and 8: it will void warranty for the part that you change basically. There is nothing to worry about especially when it comes to GPF back (cat back) exhaust. These are literally just pipes to reduce noise and guide emissions to the rear of the car.

Things to consider when going for aftermarket exhaust: weight, temperature. Heavier exhaust might wear down the rubber hangers prematurely. By removing mufflers, not only you increase noise, but most likely temperatures around the exhaust as well as you remove much of the material that the heat can dissipate to. I have seen single exit exhausts literally melt the rear diffusers.

Unless you go for very aggresive or unusual setup, you won’t have to worry about those points honestly. Buy an aftermarket exhaust, it will make your life happier, trust me.

People worry too much about warranty in general. Toyota are one of the better companies to deal with in terms of modified cars, and that's especially true if you get your work done at RRG in Macclesfield.

Of course you lose any warranty relating to the exhaust, but if you have a weld fail or similar on an aftermarket exhaust, I would like to think you'd know now to expect Toyota to warrant that failure.

If you have an engine blow up, they're not going to deny you a warranty claim with an aftermarket exhaust unless it can be proven beyond any doubt that the exhaust was the reason for the failure. It would have to be a serious issue for a metal pipe to cause an engine to fail.

In terms of insurance, as long as you tell your insurer about the modification to the exhaust, you'll have no issues when it comes to making a claim. You should always tell insurance about any change you make (even stickers, window tints etc.) as any excuse they can use, they will.

I completely agree with the 2 previous posts and would just add from my experience that any concerns you have about an exhaust invalidating the warranty then go and have a chat with the workshop manager which is what I did to clarify any grey areas that might arise should there be an engine issue, we completely agreed that a cat back would have no bearing on the warranty at all but a remap or even an aftermarket air filter may cause questions to be asked ref warranty claim.
And as has been said above do inform your insurer of the modifications you have made, I was surprised how little extra it cost to add aftermarket exhaust and wheels.

Get one bought and a little theatre to the car!!

All the important stuff has already happened by the time the exhaust is in the cat back (front pipe-back) section. Its basically just there for the noise and shouldn't affect the warranty.

also, given the cat / gpf / resonator that's already in the front part of your exhaust, it would be quite a challenge to make the back section loud enough in normal driving to be considered too loud. The AWE track is barely more than a straight pipe.

ironically the loudest thing about the car is the cold start which is there to lower* emmissions.

*does it really lower emmissions when it means you sit on your driveway for 1 min idling because the throttle response is undriveable with the cold start in progress 🤓

.. or even an aftermarket air filter may cause questions to be asked ref warranty claim.
Interested in this as well. I wouldn't have thought a drop-in filter would be a problem, since I would expect non OEM filters (as long as they are made for the car) would be a normal maintenance item.
I could see why cold air intakes could create a discussion though, purely because it would seem like a much bigger change in the engine bay visually, but equally, it shouldn't even change much regarding how the engine runs or be the cause of any engine problems.

Anyone else got opinion, knowledge or experience of this?
I wouldn't pay to much heed to it, my dealer isnt the greatest to be fair from picking the car up then charging me twice a considerable top up on services as they didnt understand how the service plan worked!! Emac had to drop my payments down from £36 to £20 for the remaining duration of the plan!!
I would gladly fit an aftermarket filter and just return the stock one at service time.

Is this Catted UEL manifold form AVO a new product? I've never seen it before (i've looked a lot) and it doesn't show up in the exhaust part of Fensport's website for the GR86. It just popped up when i was looking at exhaust parts available from Australia.

Edit: I asked Fensport if they've tested it yet with regard to fitment / emmissions / CEL and they haven't tested it yet.
I'd quite fancy it if I knew it would satisfy these criteria.

Yes and yes.
Front pipe is the only OEM element left, I replaced the headers, over pipe and cat back.
GPF is inside the FP, so can't really remove it without replacing the FP altogether.

Did you ever find yourself an exhaust, biggie?

It seems you are one of only 2 people on the entire Internet referencing the exhaust gas temp sensor.

The other is cobra exhausts. On their website the listing for their manifold states, "Please note: this part does not include a sensor boss for the PPF sensor."

Until there's a catted UEL manifold with the port for the sensor, I'm probably going to stop mindlessly searching for one.

looks like its listed under GT86 instead of GR86. I guess it'll fit, but not designed for our cars.
