IF is the key word , didn’t engines on the GT86 fail after techs didn’t reseal things correctly , IF they had 🤷‍♂️ How do you know if You have applied the sealant properly without a borescope to check🤷‍♂️
This is very true. Personally, I think the solution is a nice old traditional gasket, you eliminate the human error aspect of too much/too little/too wet/too dry.

Not really, if they applied sealant properly there would be no need to inspect for debris.

Seems like a waste of time, you remove the sump to fit this one, if it's off you might as well just apply sealant properly and refitted the standard sump.
The RTV doesn't just come from around the sump, have a look at this drivers side cam cover on my GR86

Will be interesting to see how much is in the pick ups if they are inspected for a second & third time

This guy didn't find much the second time after re-sealing it a couple of months ago:

Well, having had a Test Drive in Johnsons Toyota Liverpool's GR86 Demonstrator, at Johnsons Toyota Wirral (JTW) this morning, I had a chance to have a useful chat with the Dealer Principal (the DP) there about the five questions raised in my earlier post at #89 above.

I had, in fact, sent a link to that post to TGB's Buy Online Team in an email dated the 8th September 2022 and - in the absence of a direct and specific response - followed that up with a further email dated the 5th October 2022 which included this additional question:

6) What, if any, steps have either Subaru and/or Toyota Motor Corporation taken during the build and/or quality control of the Subaru FA24D engines fitted to the UK-bound GR86s either to eliminate or – at least – mitigate the risk of an RTV sealant-related engine failure affecting any of those cars at some point in the future?

However, as TGB had still not responded when a member of the Buy Online Team contacted me for details of my potential part-exchange vehicle, I specifically raised the issue with him during a telephone call on the 19th October 2022 - while the gentleman concerned did give me a verbal assurance as to Q5), I have yet to receive a formal, written response to all six questions from anyone at TGB.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, the DP at JTW has today confirmed that a member of TGB's Customer Services Team has now opened a Case File in respect of my email dated the 8th September 2022 (and, presumably, my subsequent emails) and that she should be in touch with me within a couple of working days - quite why the Buy Online Team did not refer my concerns to the Customer Services Team back in September remains to be seen...

@CTG 300 Stick in there , once the “ignore it and it will go away” , they will turn a page in the “Obfuscation Guide“ and we will see what comes next 👍🤔

Here, as promised in my post #4,656 on the Delivery Tracking and Collection thread of earlier this evening and for ease of reference, are the six questions about the RTV sealant issue which were originally put to Toyota Buy Online in emails dated the 8th September 2022 and the 5th October 2022 (and see my posts at #89 and #264 above):

1) How many GR86s are believed to be at risk of being affected by the RTV sealant issue which currently appears to have caused the engine failure on Blake Alvarado's car and when were they built?

2) How many, if any, of the GR86s identified in 1) above are destined for delivery to the reportedly circa. 430 UK-based customers?

3) Will and, if so, when is a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) likely to be issued by Toyota Motor Corporation and/or TGB addressing the issue?

4) What steps will TGB take to mitigate the risk of any UK-based GR86s sustaining an engine failure of the type sustained by Blake Alvarado's car irrespective of whether or not a TSB has been issued and will that work be undertaken by TGB or by the Toyota Dealer responsible for the handover before delivery?

5) Will TGB confirm that - provided a GR86 is maintained and serviced by a Toyota Dealer every year until the car has either covered 100,000 miles or is ten-years old - the Relax Warranty will cover any work rectifying an engine failure attributable to the RTV sealant issue at any time during that ten-year period?

6) What, if any, steps have either Subaru and/or Toyota Motor Corporation taken during the build and/or quality control of the Subaru FA24D engines fitted to the UK-bound GR86s either to eliminate or – at least – mitigate the risk of an RTV sealant-related engine failure affecting any of those cars at some point in the future?

TBO eventually responded in an email dated the 7th December 2022 - the relevant section of that email is therefore reproduced below:

"Firstly, I would like to apologise that I overlooked the full extent of your enquiry emailed to us on 5/10/22.

With regards to GR86 at risk of being affected by the RTV, I can only advise that as we have not had any reports of this nature in the UK, we are not aware of GR86 having this concern of this nature.

Having referred back to our Technical Department they have answered as follows:

We can only answer the customer’s questions with the information we have, we cannot comment on an isolated case in America.

1) We do not believe any UK vehicles are affected with an RTV sealant issue; this is based on no reported failures in the UK.

2) N/A

3) No Toyota Service Bulletin for RTV sealant has been published.

4) We have not had any reported vehicle failures so no steps will be taken.

5) All warranty work will be covered as long as it falls within the terms and conditions of the warranty and that will include Relax.

6) We have no information on this, so we are unable to comment.

You will be provided a service and warranty booklet with your new vehicle purchase, and this will explain our warranty terms and conditions. Should you have any concern with the vehicle this will have to be inspected by your local Toyota Centre to determine the issue with the vehicle prior to confirming whether this is a manufacturing defect or not."

I do have some experienced-based knowledge of how the global Automotive Industry works - while the answers provided by Toyota (GB) PLC's (TGB) Technical Department are strictly truthful because only a small number of GR86s have been registered and are currently in use here, they are, to my mind at least, more than a little disingenuous…

After all, I cannot believe that the Technical Departments at Toyota Motor Europe NV/SA in Zaventem, Belgium and/or Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan have not already conducted detailed investigations into the RTV sealant issue - surely, all that someone from TGB's Technical Department here had to do was to "'phone a friend" in either in Belgium or Japan!

However, notwithstanding that, I hope the answer from TGB's Technical Department to Q5) above will provide the members of this forum with some reassurance that, should their GR86 suffer an engine failure which can be attributed to the RTV sealant issue, then TGB would apparently cover that under the Warranty - provided, of course, that the car concerned has been maintained and serviced in compliance with the Warranty's Terms and Conditions.

@CTG 300 , thanks for sticking with this 👍. Personally I’m not concerned , my car will be supplied by my local dealership, who will maintain it , and MyT will be on at all times. If the engine goes “pop” I’ve nothing to Worry about other than if I can have the red Supra Demonstrator whilst my car is in for repairs 😉

I don’t know what more you expected?
@Ecsrobin,

That's a perfectly reasonable question to ask, but my primary objective here was to ensure that both the questions and Toyota (GB) PLC's (TGB) answers are on the record for the benefit of the whole GR86 community just in case anyone finds him/herself in the unfortunate position of having a GR86 with an engine failure caused by the RTV sealant issue at some point in the future.

@AndyRC,

Noted and understood - in the light of my previous post at #271 above, though, perhaps you might now update the GR86 U.K. Timeline in post #1 on that thread to include an entry dated the 7th December 2022 referring to TGB's email of that date and with a link to post #268 above.

I should add that, having closely followed the manner in which Toyota Motor North America/Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. initially dealt with the engine failure issue over there last August, I wanted to do my best to ensure that TGB would not be able to adopt a similar stance in the UK should any GR86s here suffer from an engine failure caused by the RTV sealant issue. Indeed, that's why a copy of the "Research Note" referred to in my post at #127 on this thread was sent to TGB under cover of my email dated the 8th September 2022...
