I've been driving in Belgium and average speed is fine, in the gaps still going 140-150, active driving. But it takes out the inattentive or excessive speeders. It also reduces emissions, most emissions happen during load changes, not when driving constant speed.

Bumps don't kill... Darwin award winners unfortunately like the take innocent others with them when it's in traffic...

Opinions or data? At system level, incidents always happen, and if speed is higher consequences are bigger. Simple physics. Speeding ain't a human right... Which doesn't mean governments are sometimes to singular at only targeting speed, behaviour also needs to be dealt with like e.g. in Germany, but speed will always be part of the equation.

But they never target behaviour. They go for what they deem is the quick win by saying speeding is the main issue. It's not. There's no incentive for your average driver to improve after they pass their test. Governments need to stay out of our lives as much as possible. The second they get involved it goes to :poop:

I'm not afraid of expressing unpopular opinion 😁

Excessive speed DOES have a major role both in causing accidents (reaction times, angles of view, braking distances) and in the scale of the consequences of accidents.

Little fender bender or major bodily harm isn't seperated as much speed as most think. 95% if not more of drivers would fail the physics class completely when trying to answer any questions related to the variable of speed in accidents....

Having said that, I should probably slow down a bit, driving around with (on topic: electric) 650hp and not afraid of using them, it's a miracle I haven't found more resistance yet.. 👊🥷

Last year I upgraded my dash cam in my daily to an ultra 4k so it cought all of the detail of speeding cars driving dangerously. The police have now improved their footage upload website. I only send in when the car is driving stupidly dangerous and putting lives at risk. Here in bradford there is a part of the community where young males ignore the law. Yes, I agree that driving dangerously is a big part but I have sent 6 clips in and had replies from the police when they say on the website they will not contact me saying they will be taking action with the drivers now they have been identified. Every one of them were speeding rediculously which made it very dangerous. Without the speed their actions wouldn't have been as bad and I probably wouldn't have sent it in. It was the speed that turned them into a much higher level of danger because when they lose control it can become fatal for anyone near.
Me, I hear about some complaining about the new tech in cars but I myself would gladly welcome it in my daily as I am constantly looking to stay under the limit or at least on it. Two people have now asked about the dash cam and website as they are angry about the dangerous young drivers on the roads here in Bradford speeding around everywhere.
 
That's the thing, in UK you can at least send dashcam material, and police officers are properly driver trained and, probably not often enough, will chase down and stop on behavior also. Depends where in the UK I suppose...

highlights: used BEV take up +50% year on year, and more then 93% of BEV owners will never go back to ICE acc to research NOT based on asking a small sample of very new owners that *maybe* would go back.

On a trip to Amsterdam and back at the weekend I discovered what I consider to be 'The Greatest Feature In Any Car, Ever' in my little Tesla.

On entering an average speed camera zone you are warned about it, and then for the length of the zone you are told a) exactly how many km you have left to go in it, and b) your average speed through the zone!

I can't tell you how often I'd wished for this in a car! Worth the purchase price alone!

the model I bought came with lifetime traffic and speed camera alerts. For the past few years tomtom have been emailing me with 35% offers on new devices, but they only have 1.5 or 2 years of alerts included, then they charge you annually ! I think they regret the lifetime jobs ! So I will be keeping the 5100 i think it is !

I'm aware you can get third party devices or apps on a phone to do that, but this is the first time I've seen in it in a car's own systems.
 
This thread has had it's fair share of pessimism, so I wasn't prepared to see that the UK is actually doing not too bad in improving what's actually on the grid..

Now just need the chargers... which is actually on track it seems, with "there were 66,779 devices in operation at nearly 35,000 sites at the end of July", that sounds quite ok? Seems expansion is on track also.



Oh, and those complaining "but what about china and their coal", well they installed 60GW of renewable power generation just in 2024 (9 months), which is 3x more that what the UK has installed since, well forever....

Seems to be linked to a desire to decouple from China, the news above and the two pieces below all broke within 24 hrs of each other. AI, Steel, Minerals.

We cannot rebuild steel capacity without abundant energy. We cannot onshore industry without steel, energy and minerals.

Problem with nuclear is that it's increasingly expensive going against the renewable trend and the unpredictable nature of them falling off-grid when there are problems many MW at a time are quite a burden on the net. Seems counter intuitive but the more wind power, the more evenly spread and predictable it becomes. So I think instead of spending billions on nuclear, western countries need to step up their wind, solar and battery game...

Nuclear is a geopolitical move, not a climate move, and I don't see SWB and Nuclear as mutually exclusive.

Strong nuclear baseload for industry and decentralised SWB on every house.

Also with more commercial nuclear competition, it should drive down pricing by competition. The effectively "state only" delivery of the tech and regulatory hurdles to research has hampered the cost curve reduction we've seen in basically all other technology.
 
Large rotating plant from conventional power generation is needed for grid stability, nuclear works well for this and is probably the best solution for baseload operation. As with anything you need a diverse solution.

Nuclear still seems like is scary word for the UK public, Fukushima, Chernobyl etc. They don't want it on their door step. Yet most people don’t realise that there are 6 nuclear power stations running along the north coast of France…

Nor do they realise that Chernobly continued to generate power until 2000, and Three Mile Island until 2019

In fact Microsoft have just decided to invest money in restarting TMI

 
Japan are busy backpedalling on their post-Fukushima kneejerk too. If only Germany wasn't so pig-headed.
