Electric Cars

Lotus not having the chops to go full BEV tells me only that Lotus don't have the chops to go all BEV.

It tells me nothing about the wider market.

ICE ban is 2035 and is only on new cars from that date on. Quite a lot will change in 10 years. Backtrack 10 years from today, at least my life was completely different....

I meant just ICE cars - petrol and diesel. It looks like hybrid will stay till 2035.

"Labour's pledge to reinstate the 2030 ban on new petrol and diesel car sales may now permit hybrid vehicle sales until 2035, offering relief to manufacturers and easing the transition to zero-emission vehicles, according to industry experts.
September 27, 2024".
Source Motor finance online.

So, if the GRY Mk3 is introduced in 4 years - 2029 I can't see it being just ICE as now as they would have a very short sales window to get them all delivered plus the price and especially the VED would be through the roof if the government continue to use a stick to get us to change in each years budget.
I would be happy to see MK3 as a hybrid or even a full electric drive with small ICE as generator. I don't expect everyone to agree with that though as the purpose of the GRY is to be a traditional sports car. Could the next GRY be on the same lines as the new Renault Alpine A290 that is getting rave reviews as an old fasioned hot hatch but an EV.
I am sure we will see many more hot hatch EVs coming out in the next few years running up to those deadlines.

Dealer called yesterday, the wife's new singing kettle arrives on Friday. VW ID.5 GTX in Moonstone Grey. It will be interesting to experiment for three years at someone else's risk as it's a company car. Changed to Octopus Energy and have an Ohme Home Pro with a 5m tethered connection being fitted to the side of our garage in preparation. Interesting times ahead...

Get solar fitted, charge out at the electric “pump” fee to wife’s employer 🤣

Win.

We'll make a judgement call. I could fit a few panels on the rear elevation. However, 8ppm is all that can be claimed back.

On a 3 year lease I’d be pretty confident in saying you won’t get payback for the outlay.

It certainly didn’t work financially for us to supplement the (5) existing panels we have. Partner is at work most days during the week when they would generate most, weekends we are likely out and about in the car. A cheap PM tariff is best.

Enjoy it for what it is, when it arrives.

ID.5 GTX in Moonstone Grey arrived a few hours ago. Took it for a spin and that computer on wheels does go like a stabbed rat for sure. Installed an Ohme Home Pro this week, set up Octopus Intelligent EV Tariff and plugged it in for a charge overnight. Off for a long run tomorrow. Will certainly be interesting.

Spotted a new BYD ‘Seal’ parked on a neighbour’s driveway, apparently there is a dealer in Edinburgh (Seafield Rd). Looked very nice. I might take a trip across next year for a look around.

A mate has just leased one as his own company car. The fastest model in black. The fit and finish is something else, let alone the shove it has.

Tesla a most dangerous car brand in this study. Too much trust in autopilot, or people doing something else in car than just driving?
Interestingly, Porsche 911 was the 4th most dangerous car model (Cars With the Most Frequent Occupant Fatalities)

for sure the high fatalities numbers for Tesla are (also) correlated with their performance levels (speed/acceleration)

I know it’s based on cold, hard statistics, but I’d take that with a pinch of salt considering the Y and the 3 are basically the same car and the 3 isn’t even in the list.

Or maybe it just suggests that the kinds of people who choose MPVs over saloons are markedly dumber and therefore worse drivers? Who knows.

Maybe driving too fast is too easy and common nowadays that it gets us into higher death rates aswell.
Cars are too fast and easy to drive fast, vs. what is the skillset and awarness of people driving them.

Wonder if we would start getting less fatalities and better cars if internet could be disabled while driving. That would make a GREAT EU law!

Actually, this study is based on the miles drive: Fatal Accident Rate (Cars per Billion Vehicle Miles)
This impacts the scope of the study and those numbers should be taken carefully IMO.

Apparently not. I was a bit sceptical it was so high, found this, still higher than average becuase imho some tesla drivers really really can't drive (and insurance rates are very high here in Sweden, see lots of car with parking damage), but still 3x lower death rate then reported by a blog not revealing their mileage driven data set - if using actually available data on mileage driven...

Lots of Teslas where I live, I am mostly surprised at how moderatly they are driven given their performance. But yeah sometimes I see a few accelerating bit faster or doing a redlight pull, but yet to see one driven at speed in a bend, really can't recall a single one and I see one every other minute....

/On it in every bend when possible/appropriate

US traffic is shockingly unsafe in general. Awful driving standards, lots of dangerous crossings (and almost no roundabouts) , proliferation of drugs etc.

Fully agree on awareness, it's a general problem, see far too many people swerving and talking on or looking down in their phone and basically totally oblivious of their surroundings. It's scary....

Having driven in both Sweden and Finland where people mostly abide to rules and drive safely I can see why. We also have quite a few Teslas over here. Most people drive like they are not scared of death or speeding tickets in Estonia. I have only heard of one or two crashes. The most known one from June this year;

Also no yearly safety tests for the vehicles. Incredibly obvious when you spend time there. The condition of vehicles is terrible generally.
