Large rotating plant from conventional power generation is needed for grid stability, nuclear works well for this and is probably the best solution for baseload operation. As with anything you need a diverse solution.
Indeed. And as with renewables it would be better to have 30 smaller reactors distributed across a country than 5 mega reactors producing the same MW, the failure of one of which would cause a huge strain on the grid.

Anyway, I'm sure the boffins at National Grid etc. have been giving this some thought and maybe the solution doesn't need to be found on an internet car forum :D

If only we could get politicians and the NIMBYs to do the right thing for once, with an eye on the future of the country and the planet, and not on their next election/house prices.
 
Yeah, this is where Rolls Royce SMR 'should' be flying off the shelves...

Federal Election soon, Greens are the primary drivers of the "no" conversation and they've been losing ground in state elections.

I smell a u-turn coming.
 
SMR have large issues with much larger waste generation due to small size / bad efficiency.
Geopolitical and commercial which is it, either it is state, or it's commectially viable. In the latter case, go ahead.

France nuclear had like almost half of them down during the Ukraine first year, contributing a lot to the extreme prices and costing EDF billions. Rotational mass in all honour, but Sweden has like had 10 or so sudden nuclear stops, and they stop producing in minutes, providing the biggest threat to shutoffs, and saved by the systems put in place for renewables - the irony. Other ways of providing actual stability exist, gas turbines can fire up really quickly, produce massive power (same as in nuclear plants really that are turbines too) and can run on e.g. hydrogen produced during periods of high wind. H2 doesn't make much sense decentralised due to massive infrastructure costs, but it does make sense centralised to provide exisiting energy infrastructure, i.e. electricity generation.

Nothing against keeping the nuclear plants in existance , but just saying new ones, riddled with problems often, aren't necessarily sound solution commercially, can take ages to build (recent one in finland was 20 years delayed).

State should clearly regulate the framework so needs are supplied, actual generation should be commercial because otherwise there is a real risk we're doing something that isn't viable for decades...

That's my current take anyway.

How does this relate to electric cars. Well not so much, the generation power needed to run an electric fleet is quite low and could even be negative with V2G as cars are 95% stationary, the actual energy GWh consumption is a few percent at national level if all cars are 100% electric. Consumption grows for other reasons, but if China can build 60GW power generation in 9 months, UK can build 20 in 30 years.... (similar story elsewhere)

Well... it'll likely be both based on the funding model being proposed in the content I shared earlier. Government investment in the most cost efficient commercially developed reactors. I hope we see renewed research and competition.

I want our tech and military supplychain to be independent of China.

I want to see renewed nuclear endeavours.

I want to see centralised and deceentralised SWB incentivised at scale. I have a decent shareholding in Tesla, seeing the success of their renewables business brings me happiness.

I don't see the conflict, nor am I persuaded by the fearmongering(not that you are engaging in that @Onehp)

I work in nuclear medicine. The radiation released by Three Mile Island was equivalent to everyone in a 3 mile radius getting a chest X-ray. I get more radiation each time I fly over the Atlantic for work.

A little levity perhaps...

It's not the size per se, it's the persistence and storing it safely many times longer than human civilisation has existed. Which basically becomes a cost burden if you get 3x as much of it for the same energy out...

As for the aliens, what they really are thinking is, why bother with expensive fission and all the hassle when you have an centralised fusion reactor distributing energy freely across the whole globe wirelessly and for free :unsure:
(just need some form of receivers...)

Harry has got a point.

For supercars barely driven mileage wise, going full electric doesn’t make sense. And since dragy and youtube, there has been too much focus on creating the fastest cars, forgetting about the feeling. We at large have ourselves to blame. Not that supercars ever were rational.
Plus side old ones will be well cared for and be valuable, and big depreciation will in a ironic sense drive exclusivity for those smart enough to pick up something they really like themselves cheap.

Personally would really have considered a Taycan if it were UK prices here. Harry also touches a sensitive point there, RHD are much more sensitive to fluctuations in value, being on a much much smaller and quite isolated market (no good market movements between RHD markets)

agree, for 30k Taycan would be quite nice car.

Renault Alpine might have made the first real electric hot hatch. Some people that were expecting 400hp awd haven't really understood that driving fun isn't just derived from straight line performance.... would love to drive some very twisty fun roads in one, or just scoot about in town if one must...

 
Well I get that. I paid sub £60k for my 650hp 5N, pay 2x or 3x more for a similar experience with a little more perceived luxury?
It's logical there will be a tables turning scenario. When EV in the beginning were a form of status with big performance and higher price tags, they will now become cheaper while driving ICE will become more expensive and a luxury thing as they offer something over all the similar experience EVs.
For me the 5N is a form of budget RS6/X5M/Cayenne Turbo, depreciating yes but not from very high levels, and cheap as chips to "fuel" in the comfort of my driveway...
 
I am not against EV as I also have a driveway to charge with Octopus at 7.5p Kwh so would be very cheap to run. I Like the look of the Kia EV3 and is the size of my daily Yaris Cross which is giving me 67 mpg from new.
I do think EV is the future - but that is not right now for everyone. Brother in law just bought the Qashqui which is 100% electric drive with an ice engine as a generator. Mazda have brought out their similar car with a very small rotary engine producing the electric. For now, I think this is the best way to go.
If governments continue to hold out to total ICE ban in 2030 there will be industries failing and many unemployed.
When they see this and if manufactureres make a stand along with Joe public then they must change their mind and allow hybrid to continue longer term.
My Niece gets a car given due to very dissabled child and has now been told she needs to accept an EV. She has no driveway and no safe way of charging at home. I suspect millions are like this so how can they be forced to get a plug in vehicle.
I susspect there will be a big ground movement soon with public and manufacturers warning the governments in Europe that they are going too far too fast and must step back a few decades or so. Make ICE ingines much cleaner yes but not a total ban especially now the USA won't be playing this silly game any longer.
Having said all that, I actually like driving in EV mode 50% of the time in my Yaris Cross so could see me in the new EV3 in 5 or so years as long as I have the GRY for fun. By then the infrastructure - chargers and battery maintenance will be better and depreciation should be more normal. I need a few more years to see it all working better before I jump. I will one day.
