NHSTA(the US Equivalent of Department of Transport) show pure battery EVs are involved in approximately 10x less fires than ICE vehicles, whilst hybrids are approx 10x more likely to be involved in fires than ICE vehicles.

I work in fire protection, there is a race going on for finding effective ways of dealing with EV Fires.
Current stats are that EVs burn 10-30 less often then ICE, but when they do it's both very poisonous gasses (not that you'de want to breathe a ICE fire but anyhow) and very high heat development, which is as you point out is a big issue in especially closed spaces.
First step might not be banning parking per se, but not allowing underground charging which is the biggest risk factor for EV fires.
Make no mistake, any car fire is a enclosed parking space is no joke ... Plenty of work to do.
 
Wow. They sound really dangerous and expensive!!!1 It's a good thing non-EVs never go on fire...

Or, maybe we can listen to the insurance industry themselves who assess the incidence of EV fires much, much lower than ICE cars, something like 20-50 times less likely as others have said above, and with similar losses per claim.

Besides, the latest LFP chemistries being used in a lot of the lower-end cars now do not even have thermal runaway issues, so have even less to worry about.

Yeah, spent some time trying and failing to understand the whys and wherefores of that, ultimately their (alleged by NHSTA) propensity to catch fire seems to be colouring the view of EVs generally.

Do you have any handle on the hybrid fire rate in your role in fire protection?
 
Datapoint here on fire rates in the US

EV 25 per 100,000 sold
ICE 1530 per 100,000 sold
Hybrid 3,475 per 100,000 sold


Data from the National Transportation Safety Board showed that EVs were involved in approximately 25 fires for every 100,000 sold. Comparatively, approximately 1,530 gasoline-powered vehicles and 3,475 hybrid vehicles were involved in fires for every 100,000 sold.

My recollection above was rather off. BEV are way more than 10x lower than ICE and Hybrids "only" 2x ICE.

I'm not on that end of chain but you data intrigued me and I actually have public access to the incident reporting from Sweden 2018-2023.

Baseline, 2023 there were almost 300 thousand pure EV's in Sweden, and roughly double number of hybrids, on a total of 5 million cars.

I went through the incident data and then I weighed the incident rate over the years (taking in account the growing number of EV/hybrids in the period) for the number of cars for one year to get some better resolution.

Rough data as above:

EV 5,5 per 100,000 sold
ICE 82 per 100,000 sold
Hybrid 4,4 per 100,000 sold

So a lot lower rates then US generally, suprising by itself, maybe could connected to general much lower accident rates, better driving and infrastructure standards, very litte smoking?
I'm also guessing the very low hybrid numbers might be off, as probably a lot of gasoline fires in hybrids weren't reported as a fire in a hybrid car, rather just ignored and pooled in the big pool of car fires.

Also interesting, if looking at confirmed fires in the high voltage batteries for pure EVs, it looks like this:
Confirmed fire in HV batterry: 1,4 per 100,000 sold

Ah yes, but the rest of EV fires could still be HV fires, just unconfirmed, right? Well actually we also have confirmation where it was NOT a fire in the HV battery on pure electric cars, on hybrids the reporting quality is not as good.
NO fire in HV battery: 3,2 per 100,000 sold (I readily assumed if the fire was confimed to the engine bay and/or the whole car didn't burn down without firefighting, the main battery didn't burn - obviously).
So if we discard these fires as we're specifically interested in the risk of the high voltage batteries burning, and deduct the same from ICE for sportmansship, the above statistics become:

EV HV battery 2,3 per 100,000 sold
ICE 79 per 100,000 sold

Interestingly, I can only find 1 case where it's confirmed that the high voltage battery caused the fire, meaning if you have a fire extinguisher, there is still a good chance you could stop a fire in all the cases the fire started elsewhere.... need to get that extinquisher!

Or an ICE car is 34 times more likely to burn than the battery of an electric car. And then we haven't even taken into account differences in mileage, electric cars tend to do a bit more mileage in Sweden....

But the general ballpark number of 20-50 less likely for an EV fire as @Duke reported seems to fit the Sweden case at least.


PS: some difficulty also in these statistics. Sometimes several cars burn, one is a hybrid, no know cause. Still this is reported as a hybrid fire. Even a few where the cause was confirmed as a gasoline car that started the fire, are still reported as EV fire when an EV is parked besides, in the above numbers ( 2 cases). Not always clear cut...

It is being reported on many press platforms but I have made a small copy of just one section.

"South Korea has asked automakers to identify the suppliers of batteries used in their electric vehicles, a government statement said on Tuesday, as authorities seek to calm public safety concerns after a series of fires involving EVs.

The South Korean units of Mercedes-Benz and BMW on Tuesday disclosed the names of their battery suppliers for the first time after an EV explosion prompted a nationwide safety investigation.

The German carmakers revealed the suppliers for their EV models on their websites, after Hyundai and Kia shared the names of their battery makers in recent days.

The moves came as government officials met with automakers on Tuesday to discuss short-term measures to prevent the risk of further EV fires."



Sam, your figures are probably correct but people see headlines rather than detailed facts.
The headlines will worry people - not just potential owners but all people associated with cars and potential problems such as new building planning permission for underground parking whether it be retail, hotels or multi storey housing.

Next day, today, there was on the Swedish radio that there have been 500 confirmed battery fires. Globally. Since 2012. On a EV count of 24 million. Conclusion, the risk is very low and actually the biggest risk is an ICE fire spreading to a battery car. So it's very important with traditional fire fighting, both preventative, sprinkler systems in buildings (with perhaps additives that help quench car fires and if possible battery fires) and fast response of fire fighters. Of course training and methods for putting out battery fires are also important, but the risk has been grossly exaggerated at times.

That said, if things go as planned, there will be much more EVs on the road in the future, which will increase incidents. That happening also depends on battery chemistry, LFP which is quite widespread (base teslas, BYD and some more) and several other future chemistries are not prone to thermal runaway. So basically, the risk should be managed just like any other fire risk, insurance companies are a big driver in improving fire safety as its usually them that need to foot the bill...
 
The other side of the depreciation coin.... Cheap motoring with intact warranties...

2-3 year old Highland Model 3 Performance would be compelling with 50-60% depreciation.
 
I know of a couple office buildings in London, that have underground/building carparks which have the chargers installed but will not let them them be used due to insurance.
 
With private sales shrinking, month on month, how long will companies sustain these losses, given the tax advantages are diminishing? They make up 80% of new registrations. None of this takes into consideration that 70% of people that experience owning an EV, choose to buy something else as their next car and only 40% of households can/could charge at home.

100% of new sales and 30% of all vehicles on the road to be fully electric by 2030? They are dreaming. Take up at the moment is around 16% of new regs and 2.6% of the total on the road.

My bet for the next few years; EV depreciation will slow as more individuals switch to the already registered vehicles available. The caveat is this could be compounded by the thousands of new cars (possibly millions) sitting on dealership forecourts, mandated to be registered to reach ‘targets’. Used/nearly new ICE will rise and then soar in value the closer we get to 2030 - as they have in France.

When politicians start realising that not one of them in human history has managed to achieve growth without cutting regulation/mandates and letting the market properly function, then this is all just a pipe dream. The mandates are not just stifling sales, the nonsensical energy policy and decades of mismanagement of the country’s electrical infrastructure actually have as big an effect on the success of the EV - and of course another big elephant in the room is insurance…

Everything else is being demonised - even so called sustainable fuels. Investment is negligible in hydrogen. Government is putting all its eggs in one basket (perhaps as much as they did with diesel).

I’m not an EV hater. In as much I was probably a major fan boy at one stage. Went to Tesla factory in Fremont etc. But the harsh reality is they are not fit for purpose with the environment/system structure they are being brought into. Policy makers are destroying what is left of U.K. car manufacturers and upending supply chains for pretty much a market that does not exist. No amount of tinkering will change the situation.

From a consumer perspective the cars over promise, under deliver, are more expensive to run that is lead to believe and the user experience pales into the convenience of what we’ve become accustomed to over decades.

Sam, yep I largely agree. Tesla are different, but ultimately their success in the U.K. will be capped by grid and consumer capacity (affordability, charging ability, insurance and ownership costs). If I ever buy another EV, it’ll only be a Tesla.

Incidentally here on the Island we have a unique situation (but applicable for many small jurisdictions and countries around the world) where it is virtually impossible to secure insurance for EVs, particularly Tesla as the risk to insurers of one going wrong precipitates in a higher cost. Any broken Tesla’s have to go on a low loader back to the U.K. as there is no service centre here and therefore no one able to work on them. The government here is pledging the same horse-s**t of trying to secure high EV adoption. Well, if no one can work on them, then insurers face big repair costs, which means exorbitant prices for consumers. My cheapest quote for the Y was £4000, for annual insurance. Thats why it went.
