We joined the EV club this week with the arrival of this Model Y performance. Could not be more different to the ‘86 but absolutely brilliant in its own ways. Laughably quick and extremely practical.

Had one try to redlight race me in the 5 N. It took off really well. With tinted rear windows and inbuilt rear shades, I guess he didn't see the sleeping baby in the back so was no game from me at the time. The other kids wouldn't have minded though...
 
One thing is clear, for performance cars, EV is cheap. The 130k£ hardcore Yaris in the carwow vid posted elsewhere in the forum does a flat 11s on the 1/4 mile. The 5 N does like 11,3 so a little slower, but I paid, corrected for UK VAT, 55k£ for mine and it has a warranty.... And it's a comfy, roomy usable car with, for me, close to zero fuelling costs - which can also do an estimated 7:30-7:35 on the ring and 3 consecutive laps sub 8, with some proper tyres but otherwise stock. And you can choose if you want to feel like driving a gasoline car (bit slower, but imho massively more fun...), yeah it's no lambo but the latter has a cost too - like enjoying listening to modern (mostly electronic) music on a nice stereo vs live artist perhaps?

One thing is clear, for performance cars, EV is cheap.

Really hoping Tesla manage to deliver their Model 2 Dual Motor or Performance in the £30-35k range.
 
I agree with an awful lot of things you say @Onehp but to say that for performance EVs are cheap and comparing that to someone that’s spent £130k on a GRY is a little bit disingenuous.

One could buy an older car like an E46 or 370Z, or even something like an Evo, chuck £30-40k at it and achieve very impressive performance, whilst still maintaining the practicality. What’s more that old car is far better for the environment than a brand new EV - as it’s already been built.
 
Then I start to worry about youngsters, accidents and insurance, though :D

I made due with 80-90hp my first 10 years, it was dangerous enough :p

Hopefully insurance costs will continue to be the barrier to kids getting such fast beasts

When I passed my test at the belated age of 21, I searched out the fastest car I could with the lowest insurance rating. I found the Charade GTti, it was quicker than all the popular hot hatches at the time - Saxo VTR, VTS, 106 GTi, etc - but also 50% cheaper for me to insure.

I survived, just! ;)

I know it's not the same ;) And I actually don't care too much for numbers, rather the experience. That Yaris will feel completely nuts, while the EV, in EV mode at least, you get used to the performance scarily fast...

Yaris or 370Z, I think the former is more practical ;) Neither come close to my beatbox EV, it's as roomy as Cayenne(!) Coupe and even more usable (flat floor, slideable/tilt rear seat, storage)... that does matter for me where I am in life. As for the environment, it all depends how much you intend to drive those builds. Probably not very often/far, and then you're right, their emissions are minor just by the lack of miles - perfect it that fixed the need for (weekend) thrills. However if doing lots of miles, BEV is easily better, especially if 'fuelled' with renewable electricity like where I live.

This is the crux of the EV argument - and why a one size fits all approach by idiotic governments is doomed to fail. We all use our cars differently and don’t get me started on how we ‘refuel’ our EVs in Britain…what a joke!

Yeah, but the old cars aren't disappearing and new ones will soon be completely ruined by electronics too...

EV supercars don't make much sense either, for the mileage they typically do, it's better to keep them gasoline. Except if you're like sir Atkinson and drive your F1 two times around the globe, and why the usuability of a Rimac Nevera is actually crucial for it to make actual sense - gotta use it.
 
I have zero interest in EV at the moment. Until there is a definitive agreement if this is the best way forward then I’ll be sticking to my hybrid.
Certainly not going to be duped by the government like diesel drivers were all those years ago. Hero to zero overnight.
Battery tech and charge times and charging infrastructure needs to be far better before I use my money on it.

My good lady wife recently changed jobs, with it comes an EV. The available list of cars was chopping and changing slightly, but settled on a VW ID.5 GTX in Moonstone Grey with a heat pump - no other optional extras allowed unfortunately or I would have paid for a tow bar. At least it's a twin motor 4WD model. Arrives in January, with a 7kw charger being installed on the side of our garage, although we do have a three phase supply in there for future options. Time to experiment on someone else's financial risk and the BIK is a bit of a no brainer. 😁

Tech will always improve, but I sense sometimes people expect too much of the solid state battery, arriving in two years time over the last decade or so.

Biggest thing is that it will make small BEV more accessible. Like 5-10k cheaper. And they will charge a lot faster, now often limited to approx 100kW.

If keeping range, cars will get 10-15% lighter. Great, but not per se revolutionary. Car models already differ that much today and don't necessarily sell better. Much more consequential dumping the SUV trend...

If keeping price and weight it will almost double the range. Of great consequence for especially heavy goods vehicles. Practically for most home charging, much less, guessing most will prefer the cost cut.

Faster charging. How powerful chargers are we gonna have? 300kW? 500kW? 1000kW? 800v platform cars already charge almost twice as fast as 400v, yet people still buy 400v in numbers. Maybe not that important?

All the while when waiting for this tech, if it such a game changer, what will happen to the value, not of BEVs, but of the ICE car? How much additional ££££ has one spent on fuel while waiting these last 5 years and maybe another 5 coming?

Peope complain motoring is so expensive, but historically it's never been cheaper and the roads are full because of it....

Just some thoughts, not all scenarios play out to be most beneficial to wait. To me current offerings have already cut cost near in half for the fun and performance, and charging speeds are already twice as good as most offerings on the market and another halving, if a charger even is available, would be very much diminished in returns already...

But yeah as I understand the situation in the UK isn't that great and I did wait myself approx 15 years in Sweden until 3 years ago to make the first moves, now fully transitioned...

I only do 10k a year. I get about 400 miles from £50. That’s not expensive and I have already paid for the car. Happy with that and am certainly not dropping more money to try and save a bit. Quite happy with my costs.
 
Great, isn’t it. Free charging too at my partners work - though we did just have a 7kw charger installed at home.
Never in my life would I spend £56k on a singing kettle, to watch it's value evaporate like steam 😁
 
Korea are now getting worried about EV fires after a Merc spontaniously set on fire in an underground garage in an apartment block taking out 140 cars. A secons fire happened a few days later which made them have an emergency meeting to discuss EV dangers in public buildings.
Another poster says he believes two things will halt the demand for EVs:
- Fires that take out a whole garage and if that garage is in or under a public building then that is a worry to the authorities and insurance companies.
- Probably the one that will really hit EV buyers and the rest of us is insurance. I recently posted a video of a british chap who travels the world teaching emergency responders all about run away ev fires. He explained how dangerous this is to buildings with underground or attached garages where EVs are currently allowed to be parked with other vehicles. He explaind why EVs can't be parked in current garages as the buildings services - gas, lecky and water will be also be in there and the garage entrance won't allow fire vehicles in. When will hotels start telling customers they have to park their EV elsewhere as their insurance insists on it along with most other public buildings on the planet. One will do it then all will do it.
- Car insurance will soon be unafordable because of this so it could be the buildings and car insurance companies that turn people away from EVs till new batteries are developed - which mean the current cars will be worthless then.
I do think EVs are the future but that is a long time off.
