Electric Cars

Unreliable? You experience a lot of brownouts and blackouts? In the UK? More than you did, say, 20 years ago?

Nah it's just a tired talking point that ignores the direction of travel for the energy industry.

Has anyone noticed that the average EV SUV driver is a complete dick and thinks they are Lewis Hamilton on the roads?
Yes your car is fast but it still looks like a bag’o’shite and not impressing anyone. Enjoy replacing the tyres every 5k.

Defo have replaced the average ignorant Audi rep mobile.

There are probably quite a few EV SUV drivers on this forum. Are they all complete dicks?

It’s just a car. No need to project so much.

I’m not quite where this dude is and even though I’ve had EV’s before, there’s not one on the market that is close to tempting me.

Said it before, will say it again. The public network in the UK is so bad and shows no signs of improvement. ICE’d bays, broken chargers and queues. I stopped at two motorway service stations on my last trip across and there were queues to use the Superchargers (and Tesla still has by far the best and most reliable network).

If you want to do longer journeys, regularly or occasionally, or you can’t charge at home (think it’s about 40% of homes are unsuitable for domestic charging) then an EV makes no sense.

I'm waiting for the MG Cyberster GTS to become a production reality. Wifey says I should go buy the soft-top version now, but the reality of living with one in Scotland, especially as I can't put it in our garage, doesn't stack up. Gimme a hard-top coupe every time. For an EV I think the GTS is Sexeh!!!

More over-compensation rather than projection. They are awfully touchy as well when challenged about their hi-performance milk float being just that. I like the new Renault 5 EV.

It's such a peculiarity of human nature - I find myself sometimes just being in the mood for an easy drive and am definitely sensitive or more aware of aggresive or inconsiderate driving at that time. Equally, if I need to be somewhere or am in a rather impatient mood, I would probably quite easily appear to be inconsiderate or aggresive. I sometimes picture myself being in a calm mood spotting myself being opposite thinking what an idiot!

As you say there are a lot of Dicks on the road and they come in a selection of all types of vehicle.

I'm probably branded a dick by many people, but it's because I'm wholly intolerant of blatant disregard of the highway code. An example of why people might consider me a dick: If I'm driving my other vehicle, which is limited to 70 mph, and I'm overtaking someone who thinks it's OK to speed up and undertake me because their mind doesn't extend further than drive in middle lane, speed up when gap, slow down when car then i will cut back in before they get along side me and squirt them with the screenwash until they have to put their wipers on.

Some may call it petty, but I call it a life lesson. My next post will be more on-topic, I promise.

I missed that the Xiaomi XU7 Ultra track package did a 6:22 record on the Ring. Now that is seriously effing fast. Trofeo RS tires so not super exotic. Proper race driver.

Also the AMG GT XX prototype looks really impressive. Range, charge speed, speed, handling, aero, emotion, even some history, it has it all!?!

Electric cars ARE bad for the environment. And steps MUST be taken to limit the consequences.

However if you think the logical conclusion then must be that we should continue with fossil fuels, you are gravely mistaken. Fossil fuels are many times worse. Just the energy used to extract, refine and transport the gasoline to your car is enough to power the equivalent electic car, not taking in account chemicals, pollution and devestation in the process. And not even considering the subsequent and irrevocably burning into the atmosphere....

I am all for proper enthusiast cars where the the burning of gasoline contributes to great quality of life. But for mundane transportation which is 95% of all car miles, it just plain wasteful and unnecessary.

Still no consideration given to overnight charging of these answers to global warming, when in the UK energy production is driven by high carbon producing fuels. And also, much is the challenge with reducing consumerism and the further mining of the minerals required to produce these things, what is the solution to the known fact that from the start of their lives, the batteries degrading.

Great news! We already have excess energy at night!

when in the UK energy production is driven by high carbon producing fuels
Great news! Over the past year, around 60% of UK grid power came from low/zero carbon sources, and that % is only going to increase.

And also, much is the challenge with reducing consumerism and the further mining of the minerals
It's great to be concerned! But planetary resources extracted for batteries are used for many years and can be recycled, whereas planetary resources extracted for use as fuel are simply burned once and the by-products dumped into the atmosphere.

Great news! We now have plenty of evidence that even the primitive batteries we have now will last the realistic life of the vehicles they are in.
