GR86 Anyone unplugged the sound generator?

I’m in two minds as to whether to disable the sound generator. In day to day driving I don’t go above 4K rpm that often, does the sound generator make much of a difference below 4K?

Little or nothing below 4k, which is sensible so you don't get drone at motorway speed in top. I would recommend going over 4k every day though [when safe and legal]

If you're wide open throttle as you approach 3.5-4K, yes, and sadly it's the worst kind of noise. I want rid of that, but I like the noise 4-5K on part throttle.
 
Finally after 15 month I unplugged the fake engine noise (took all of 3 minutes amazingly!), and already I am so happy I did (and annoyed I waited so long). Yes it is very quiet now but the genuine engine noise can still be heard when pressing on, and its soooooo much better. The fake noise I didnt hate below 4k rpm but above made me avoid the rev range it was so awful. The car even feels easier to drive as the engine noise and revs/throttle/clutch seem to match much better.
Now how to sort the atrocious tyre noise for the long journeys is all thats left!

I found the tyre noise to be coming from the front, which was confusing and I thought it sounded more like a bearing noise than tyres.

Thanks to a chat with another owner I put some acoustic isolation foam under the fixings for the front strut braces and it seems to have fixed it.

It was the guys at https://www.cambridgeautosound.com/ that worked out where the problem was coming from but the acoustic foam bit was my addition.

I'll post a thread about it eventually, it's very easy to fix.
 
I really must get around to disabling the noise generator, I’ll probably try and do it with Techstream if I can remember how it works!
I know the best way to find out is to actually do it, but what is the actual difference above 4k rpm? Is it less of a screaming noise? I must admit it does discourage me using high revs too often as it is a bit raucous.

Try it, one of the reasons I took so long as thought it would be a fiddle. 3 mins and done. Very easy to plug back in if you wanted to.

Thank you so much for this info. I’ll go and have a read. It might make me actually want to drive the car on longer trips (currently I hate it!)
 
Had the toyota dealer in Milton Keynes turn mine off and I much prefer the honest sound of the engine. The fake noise is just not a nice noise. Am tempted by the AWE touring exhaust now though but I promised myself no mods for at least the first year...

Get it bought! I had the Cobra exhaust fitted before the car was even run-in, with less than 50 miles on the clock. It gives you some encouragement to get out and drive so you can start to open it up. The OEM exhaust is just too quiet :censored:

I switched mine off on Saturday, I’ve only had one drive so far with it off but it was certainly quieter. As someone else on here said, the noise generator does add a certain drama at high revs so I may switch it back on at some point.
 
To me, fake cabin noise is similar to making “Brrrrr, Brrraa, Brrrraaahhh!” noises yourself as you go through the gears (like a kid on a pushbike), or playing a computer game with headphones on. The car is still whisper quiet on the outside but, on the inside you think you’re an F1 pilot 😆.
 
When I'm driving I've usually got my music on as loud as I can take so I think the combination of music and the fake noise is just too much. Without the fake sounds I can clearly hear Adele hitting the high notes now!
(No offence to any Adele fans...)

Subaru probably hired someone who's previous postition was designing the electric car space ship noise for an EV, and they wanted to leave their mark on the 86 project. Having unplugged it after owning the car for less than a month, I just laugh when I hear it now in reviews etc. It's such a stupid sounding noise that doesn't even sound like an engine :ROFLMAO: Kind-of reminds me of the noise a 90s arcade racing game might make.
