GR86 Anyone unplugged the sound generator?

Unplugged mine about a month ago and found the car too quiet. There’s very little induction or exhaust noise so what you’re left with is the sound of the actual engine (mechanical), which isn’t a particularly nice sound or one that encourages you to rev it out.

Spent a month looking at exhausts and induction kits. The dealer seemed pretty relaxed about either and said there was no impact on warranty.

I’d love the infinity intake but can’t justify the cost. I’d also love the ctek exhaust but likewise the cost is steep (5% of the cost of the whole car, for a cat-back exhaust).

So sound generator plugged back in today and I’m enjoying driving it again.

Not the popular opinion but it’d be boring if we were all the same.
I have not turned mine off either. I'm. I'm not offended or bothered by it. After 15k miles it is what it is.

I love my Milltek cat back exhaust note. This did totally change my engagement with the car. I love it.

Yep same, I've got a cat back exhaust and the sound generator still going after 20k. I've found it gives me 2 quite different types of sound and quite like the combo. I'll probably only disable with an Intake / much louder exhaust 👍

I've had mine unplugged about 6 months which Im really pleased about but have bitten the bullet and getting a CTEK in a couple of weeks which Im excited for. I hadnt thought about it being 5% of the car :ROFLMAO: but I did the man maths of if Toyota had offered a sports exhaust as an optional extra at the same price I'd have gone for it...

Excuse me, anyone has felt that unplugging the sound generator, the car become louder about road noise? basiclly called NVH (Noise, Vibrations, Harshness). I unplugged mine and I really like more the natural engine's sound, but on the other hand I feel that road noise is louder, specially tyre noise! I made some research and I read that some automakers use in the last period an active noise cancelling system to make a car quiter, actually the first ANC system in a vehicle was designed by none other than Lotus! and here comes my question: Is the sound generator on a GR86 something more than just a fake engine sound? A lot of owners are agree that natural engine sound is better with the sound generator OFF, and all of them just ask why Toyota has install this unuseful and unlogical system on a sport car, so... maybe this system is much more than just an engine fake noise? Maybe is an ANC (Active Noise Control) keeping quiter the GR86? We can't forget that GR86 is a great light sport car thanks to avoid lots of heavy sound isolation materials, so maybe Toyota enginiers found a solution to solve this question? Anyway, I just wanted to share my opinion and my toughts about it here, thanks!

if there is a market for this, then it'll be on AliExpress very soon! I would guess you could put the kit wire together yourself for less than £10. Get the correct plugs, some wire, a switch and some cloth tape. I reckon around £5!

If you dont mind cutting the factory wire, the you could install a switch for less than £2.

This is probably the best thing from a cost perspective. could just cut the +12v wire, add a couple of bullet connectors, then you can easily remove the switch and connect it back up if you want.

I don't think i'll ever want the generated sound on though so i'll just leave mine unplugged

Can’t see any circumstance where I’d want to switch it back on. Spend 5 minutes unplugging it and forget it ever existed. £0.

You will regret it, when you have/want to pluig it back in :D

When i sold my GR86, it took me 30 min and 11 broken fingers :D

I had the toyota tech bods turn it off via the code. If i ever sell, I'll get them to turn it on again and save my little fingers!

Dealer cured my headaches. No charge and took five minutes. That noise is just too loud in the high rpm range which made it droning in track use.
