GR86 Anyone unplugged the sound generator?

I'm getting mine switched off next week, together with the windows working from the key fob. I don't hold out much for that though. So it will be interesting to see how the car sounds then until a new exhaust the week after.

If I can do it in ten minutes, in a car park, with a crappy Windows Laptop, a dealership should be able to sort it out even quicker with the proper Techstream kit.

My dealership were so adamant that there wasn't a speaker that they wanted to rip out the intake resonator to prove it to me. I'll never take my car there.

This is the problem with a low volume sports car sold by a big brand with a million other cars in their line up. The forum can be invaluable in this situation.
 
I've just had the sound disconnected before my new exhaust goes on next week. I quite liked the fake noise, or so I thought. What a difference it makes. I am pleasantly surprised by how good the car sounds now. Even if I wasn't getting a louder exhaust I would not have the fake sound back on again. More smiles for me 😁

Wait until you hear one that's still plugged in after having yours out for a few months. You'll laugh your ass off at how ridiculous it sounds. :ROFLMAO:

Awful isn't it, never did I think car manufacturers would actively try to make a car sound like a 90s video game.

Haha, who didn't love Ridge Racer or the OG Gran Turismo.
 
Really wish they'd just gone with the sound tube from the old car. Opinion was still divided, but I actually quite liked the little induction growl. It was authentic because it just piped in noise from the intake, and it was still quite easy to block up the tube if you didn't like it, without having to go to your dealer who doesn't know their arse from their elbow.
 
I've disabled the sound generator using Techstream.
While the car is quieter I might have turned it back on if I wasn't getting an exhaust soon.
The issue is as you go up the rev range,above 5.5k to redline the muted noise is very flat and I don't think it's necessarily better than having the fake noise.

I did the same regarding using Techstream and agree that the high rev noise has lost a bit of its edge. I did use to find though that the simulated noise wasn’t quite synchronised with the revs when I lifted off to change gear, making it feel like the revs were hanging slightly, anybody else notice that?
I think on balance I prefer the car without it.
 
Personally I don't find the noise offensive.

I have not turned it off.

My new exhaust will be fitted in May. I'll see how I feel after this.

You're right. I didn't find it offensive and was happy with it on, but I had it deactivated ready for my new exhaust, and found the natural sound fantastic. Now my exhaust is on everything just sounds fantastic!
 
Unplugged mine this evening and went for a 20 minute drive - whilst there’s not so much drama, I do prefer the more organic noise.

What I also prefer is the car now being much easier to drive smoothly. As someone alluded to previously, I don’t think the “fake noise” is accurately synchronised with the actual engine revs, meaning it’s quite difficult to smoothly rev match downshifts.

The ultimate result is I prefer driving the car with it unplugged, and will be spending an ungodly amount of money on an exhaust soon. 🙈

I don’t need much encouragement!

The car really is a revelation to drive without it on - I recommend anyone who is struggling with the snatchy drivetrain to try it. You’ll be amazed at how much impact it has on your ability to rev match and accurately heel & toe when down changing.
