GR86 Vehicle Security

Yeah I think the term is CANBus coding and I believe the Cobra Alarm is the only one that is potentially in scope for use with the GR86.
Correct. The GR86 has a very limited CANBUS as I discovered when having some security devices fitted to mine: offering up a mere 16,000 combinations versus the ~274 Septillion of my previous KonaN.

I'm going to put a claim through the small claims court. I paid for mine in full so don't have TFS to put pressure on.
Putting in a claim via MCOL is really cheap and easy (I have successfully gone down this route on quite a few occasions in the past with various businesses that owed me some sort of recompense) . Don't be worried about 'legal costs' as they can't be claimed for small claims in the County Court (a small amount of costs are in scope though - for example recompense for missing a days work when attending the County Court (if it goes that far - I'd be surprised if it did in this case). Costs that can be claimed are quite limited though (previously was limited to about a few hundred pounds).!

It may be difficult putting in a claim though....

Ordinarily, you would need to show how much money a person/body owes you...and why. To note and when considering claims, the County Court operates on the 'balance of probability' (so on the balance of probability, are you owed money to get an alarm fitted?) . But in the absence of an alarm that can be fitted to the car, I can't see how it could be quantified how much is owed in any claim. It wouldn't be known how much it would cost to fit an alarm if one doesn't exist. There lies the problem with putting in a claim :rolleyes:

The key here is identifying a suitable alarm (if one exists), paying to have it fitted to the car....then putting in a claim via MCOL for recompense (not forgetting to claim for interest too, which previously was 8% for County Court claims - don't know if it has since changed).

You don't necessarily have to get the alarm fitted first before you make the claim. You could quantify how much it would cost to fit an alarm, claim for the money, then get it done if your claim is successful.

Hope this helps 😉

Okay, seeing as this is the security thread - who's GR86 is still wearing the highly theft averting Toyota Vehicle Security System sticker? :ninja:

I don't actually recall seeing that sticker..... Then again I had tints installed not long after collection so all would have been removed anyway.

Absolutely.

Because I am aware of the widely-known* affect on insurance groupings by removing it.
  • Remove it neatly yourself = rise of two insurance groups;
  • Get your detailer to remove it = rise of five insurance groups (cos you can afford it);
  • Make a right old mess/dogs dinner/pigs ear of trying to remove it and leave bits of it in place/sticky marks = rise of 17 insurance groups.
*in my head

Think I removed it and stuck it to the door jamb as it had phone numbers on it. Kind of regret doing that now, it seems the sticker itself was probably one of the most effective parts of the vehicle's security!

I removed it too, but stuck it on the inside of the glove box door. Might be time to bring it back for external viewers?

One of the first things I removed. I’m not a big fan of stickers especially on the windscreen and I’m pretty sure it makes no difference whatsoever as a deterrent to car thieves.

Spoke to an alarm installer today (on phone) who claims to have installed one of their systems on a GR86 with no issues. Needless to say it cost a bit more than the paltry £100 I was offered by TFS so I have put it back to them to see if they will revise their offer, if not financial ombudsman is next.

Which system and how much?

Not sure of the name of the system itself but the company name was Pandora, their full featured system that has remote live tracking/immobilisation/notification etc , costs 4 figures.

I might be wrong but I think Pandora do anti theft/immobiliser systems. I don’t think those systems have alarms.

They do a fully integrated system including an alarm, costs about £1,400 for the whole lot, I think it’s the ‘Smart Pro’ ? Given the dire CanBus connectivity on the GR86 though, I imagine that the Pandora system has the same limitation on immobiliser codes as the Ghost but, at least it’s all from the same company rather than having separate tracker/immobiliser/alarm installations and subscriptions.
