GR86 Vehicle Security

Same here dude. November 21st was my latest update when I enquired by email. I can’t use the App for tracking as I no longer have any orders showing (Tech are meant to be looking into it), so I’m relying on the TOL team to update me. So far they haven’t and I’ve been the one ‘pulling’ information.
By the time the GR86 arrives Scotland will be into Winter and I’ll not be driving it. 🥶😶‍🌫️
I really can’t see me running it in until Spring next year ⛅️🌺🚗
 
No follow up from TOL today, sent an email.
 
What is the reason for this though? Computer chip shortage or something?

Not that it really bothers me as the car alarm is almost as much use as a house alarm these days. People just ignore it anyway.

My insurance was also fine £294 for the year. Security is down as manufacturer fitted.
 
In the latest guidance from Toyota for their three-day drive-home insurance cover, they instruct you to put these details into their website:

Not "alarm", and not "alarm and immobiliser".

Just "immobiliser".

And if building cars without important security features didn't prove that they have a sense of humour, their annual insurance premium surely will:

I just checked the Thatcham list. Apologies if already posted but the document seems to confirm that the GR86 does not feature an alarm but does have an immobiliser.


Two separate sections:
- Pages numbers 20+21 show Toyota models with alarms
- Pages numbers 33+34 show models with immobilisers

Seems incredible that there is no alarm fitted.
 
For a few hundred quid a Category 2 Immobiliser can easily be upgraded to a Category 1 system (Alarm+ Immobiliser) by any decent installer. As said previously though, alarms are often ignored and can be prone to false triggers, such as hot weather, cats, birds, loud sounds etc. To my mind, a Cat5+ Tracker with ‘No Tag, No start’ or an Autowatch Ghost provides better security at a comparable cost to an alarm upgrade. If you’ve already got a Ghost from a previous vehicle, I’ve been quoted a mere £100 to refit, reprogram and re-register into a GR86.
 
Mild distrust to utter contempt is what I would view any publication from TUK if I’m honest.

I may have some of these sent over as a day one training aid.

Latest update from TOL after chasing them up. It not being a simple "yes it has an EC alarm" (whatever that is) isn't promising.

If it's only a few hundred to add on an alarm then I'll be doing what I can to get Toyota to foot the bill after they were advertised them as having an alarm & immobiliser, same as with the parking sensors.

They would 100% have to do a recall as that has insurance implications if anything goes wrong.
 
Not sure I'd even want it retrofitted tbh.
I imagine fitting an alarm is not a quick or easy job. Going to mean sensors fitted everywhere, I imagine quite a lot of the interior disassembled, etc.

This is the crux of it when these cars have a little more emotional attachment for an owner than the daily family run about which usually get parted out after a few years service.

In the unlikely event the wiring and mounts are already present and merely needs a siren, tilt sensor and ultrasonics connecting then that’s one thing. If the install is a complete dismantling of the car or involves drilling bodywork to mount components then it definitely lessens the desire to open that can of worms. Especially with the unknown competence of the fitter who’ll be let loose on it.
