GR86 GR86 - The “I’m thinking of cancelling / did cancel my order” thread

I know exactly what you mean and that’s why I went and ordered the 86 in the 1st place. But I currently have no car, Toyota give me no indication when I will get one having told me September before I sold my old car. Looked at buying a TT in 2016 when we opted for a MX5 which I loved. Local dealership seemed good to be fair. Love RWD and manual gearboxes but can’t help but feel TT would be a great alternative. Don’t know if I want to deal with Toyota at all now.
Try to borrow one for a weekend.

If you loved the MX5 I fear that's what you'll want again after owning a TT for a few weeks.

I've had a couple of Abarth 124 Spiders, MX5 under the skin as you probably know.

So, so different to a TT

I've been browsing the old Auto trader today and I'm thinking used M4s with the competition pack (2018+) look like relatively good value. Does anybody else think so? Is there a reason why?

View attachment 6925Having said I liked a TT but thought they needed a refresh, I have eyed up one of the black editions at £33k new and really like it. Serious doubts about the GR86 now. Not just the waiting and Toyota crap. There’s the what ifs, like if it gets dented will you be able to even get parts etc. If it’s going to be so rare is it just going to be pain if anything goes wrong.
I've been looking at TT's as well but haven't seen any new ones at 33k? Would seriously consider one at that price where did you find it?👍

I can’t see any issue with getting parts for a GR86 (getting a GR86 is the hard bit) . The car will have a 7/8 year life cycle in a global market , 10 year warranty and the parts are probably all made in Japan so have to be shipped around the globe to every market

With 4000ish cars to be sold in Europe Toyota will hold stock parts somewhere in Europe.

Were buying a globally mass produced car which will only available in very limited numbers in the U.K. so very much doubt it will be a PITA to fix, or expensive to fix.

I owned a MK1 TT QS 240 , great car but horrid manual box. Had 7/8 DSG equipped all great and never had any bother at all , MK7.5 Golf R box was fantastic. If you fancy a TT go for it , my neighbour loves hers (on her second black one) and her friend has a convertible both very happy long term TT customers 👍

This was part of the reason I ruled out an Alpine. Personally I'd much rather these were much more common on the road than they will be.

I can see this is a valid concern with an Alpine , relatively low volume car and my nearest centre would have been 2.5 hours away , not what I’d want.

Aw man, 2.5 hrs would be great! Unfortunately I’d need to to get on a ferry to visit my nearest Alpine centre 🥴
They really do seem to be great though and I did seriously consider one, but lack of dealership in Northern Ireland pretty much ruled one out…
(Ah crap, now you’ve got me trying to justify one to myself again…)

I picked up a Mk2 Audi TT Roadster this year, and am really enjoying the summer in it. For an 11yr old car it feels like good bang for the bucks.

I didn't ever think I'd want an Audi TT.

But

I saw (more accurately heard) one drive past me when out walking yesterday. TTRS with I assume the five-cylinder engine. Sounded absolutely incredible. Beautiful, rich, cultured engine note. Now I'm looking at them.

I tried 3 when they came out, REALLY wanted one BUT the ride is horrendous on 20inch alloys and rubber band tyres and finding one with Mag Ride to test was impossible. A dealer finely got a 2 litre to try with Mag Ride and which had two settings , 🤬 and 🤬🤬 , so walked away in the end. They are not without issues , exhaust valve rattle/sticking , reports of engines wanting to drink oil as much as petrol etc. Engine and box are great though 👍

I don't want to fill the forum with negativity so maybe PM me??

Had one for a year, albeit one of the first MK3's.. Maybe they've ironed out the issues?

But yes, the sound is addictive (best feature of the car)

Looks nice that.

If I progress past the 'idly contemplating' stage and on the the 'seriously considering' stage I shall get in touch for your thoughts - thanks for posting!

Hi Matthew,

Thanks for your email. I appreciate the reason for your contact.

Unfortunately, as you are aware, Toyota is experiencing delays in delivery of the new GR86. I can only apologise and understand the inconvenience this causes. I am sorry that I have no further information for you at this stage, I appreciate that this may not answer all the questions you have, but I would like to thank you for your ongoing patience.

The latest information we have is that the estimated delivery time is expected to be from the end of September onward

Just the usual type of response. I have pressed further but had no reply.
Wouldn't it be nice if they proactively contacted everyone waiting on a delivery with even that basic information so that we didn't have to trawl the internet in the hope that someone actually managed to get meaningful feedback from them?! If I was going purely on the information Toyota gave me then my car should have arrived 2 weeks ago!

Where are any of the monthly calls / emails they promised back in April? Or the reply to the email I sent on 19th July asking for an update as their own app told me the wait was "almost over"?!!

However this all plays out, I currently have no intention of ever buying a new Toyota again. FOMO on potentially a brilliant car is the only thing keeping me waiting about but if the engine issues become more widespread and we have no official communication on that before they want to take my money then that's a different consideration.

Also feels pretty ironic now that the online purchase model was apparently to stop dealers flipping cars for high mark ups and Toyota have now created a group of pissed off enthusiats that are considering doing the same!

Apologies for the above post I'm grumpy today cos

1) It's hot
2) Work's annoying
3) Ain't got me GR86 yet
+1

I agree with this as much as it's possible to agree with anything. I could have written this myself, more likely less eloquently and with more swearing.

Never liked the shape of the Audi TT. Bit too hairdressy for me and always thought the shape reminds me of a squashed vw beetle.

I know one thing.

My GR86 could arrive tomorrow, perfectly prepped, number plates attached in a GR-ZOO-approved manner, with a boot-full of the world's finest ales, spirits and cheeses, and be the greatest car in the world to drive and do 200mpg, and women/men/those of a non-binary gender identity could throw themselves at my feet for merely owning one.

BUT

I will never, ever, buy a car other than one I can physically touch and sit in and drive and smell and collect three-to-five days later, again.

Thank you for reading.

Well said.

Oddly, the wait for the Emira is going to be longer, but Lotus have always said spring next year and have been up front about delays and will also respond to emails.

Communication is such an easy thing to get wrong and seemingly so hard to get right.

Got shot of my '16 M4 (non comp) late last year as used prices were too good to miss.

For the money, it was scarily quick (remapped stage 1) but I always had the niggling potential cost of repairs in the back of my mind. I suspect this tunability makes them a prime candidate for people looking to use and abuse them (which might explain prices).

On more than one occasion getting a bit keen on the throttle set nearby car alarms off, and the cold start throttle blip really didnt go down well with the neighbors (take these as pros or cons accordingly).

Great cruiser, and but I suspect it feels about twice the size of a GR or MX5 type car and I never even got close to testing the limits of it on public roads (nor would I want to).

If I had a 5 car garage and considerably more cash I'd definitely have one again..

... Ah damn it, add me to the "thinking of cancelling" list :ROFLMAO:

Fast, noisy and anti-social for a few k more than the 86. I really want one now, thanks :D

Booked a test drive for the TT on Saturday, also spoke to Toyota “buy” online to see what cancellation procedure is. They literally don’t care if you cancel as they are sick of annoying customers wanting to know information about the car they paid a deposit on.
Just change the colour, will give you another year or 18 months to decide what you want to do. Sit back and listen to everyone’s engines blowing up 😂
