GR86 So what else could you buy new for the same money (a fun thread)?

It really is incredible how cars have shot up in price over the last 10-15 years. I suppose one crude oversimplistic hypothesis is that PCP and lease deals have masked these increases for many people, who are happy with the £xxx per month and don't really care about overall price.

Your second paragraph, I'm printing off and leaving it where my other half will see it. I.e. nowhere near the washing up.

That's it in a nutshell. The top line price is in the majority of occasions almost irrelevant these days. It's why TUK wanted the headline figure of £299 p/m.

We actually financed our last 2017 Yeti on PCH. £27k on the road for a top of the range L&K 4x4 which was £2350 up front then £125 x 23 months. That was a good deal back in the day when cars actually depreciated. We basically covered the cost of the VAT over two years and then handed it back. No brainer.

As for the second paragraph? With hindsight, I think it's pretty much word for word me making a case/pleading to the wife on April 19th ;)

That's the right way to do it; I applied the highly risky "better to ask for forgiveness than permission" approach, on the afternoon of April 20th!

its not just a recent thing, I bought a qashqai when they first came out in 2008, base price was £13k, 2 years later they launched the juke and the base price for that was £13k, my 3 year pcp ended and my 17k car was 24k to replace

Nice new Qashqai for Sir with a 1.3 litre engine?

£41,381

Just seen that and Abarth 695 (when did it change from 595?) competizione starts from 27,325 and if you get a bit excited with options it can easily creep to 31k!

I paid less that 20k brand new for my 595 comp.

I remember not that long ago you could pick up a pre-reg 595 for £11k. I had a 595 Yamaha Racing edition a couple of years back. Sounded lovely with the monza exhaust.

That looks fantastic, lovely colour set off perfectly with the wheels and brakes.

A Mini Cooper S JCW, they are up to £30k I think. I had a R53 convertible when they first came out, loads of fun, and that supercharger whine

You wouldn’t believe it but my wife WAS looking at a JCW Clubman last month with a few bits and coming out at £40k with on PCP rate of 6.9% 😳. She has decided to keep her Golf.

Oh yeah I know some models can go a lot higher than £30k, I was trying to stick to the brief

The car selection available in the UK for under £40,000 is abysmal. Not a decent looking car among any of them. Just boxes on wheels with nothibg at all to grab the attention. That's probably why the GR86 sold out because it has zero competition. Why don't Subaru bring the BRZ to this country. It already does rhd and would sell well given the demand for the 86.

The issue is that we are in the minority. Going by the people in work, I can count on one hand those of us what want something performance orientated. All the rest want vented seats and more automated functions. Someone was happy they upgraded to a Mokka from a Corsa. Some are on their 4th Kia in as many years. Most of finance have boggo spec Merc A200's. Most people are boring and want boring cars that require no thinking to use but look a good "upgrade" to show off the the same kind of people.

Those of us in work into cars all have things completely different because we buy for ourselves and no one else. I'm not buying an 86 to keep up with the Jones's or to show off to anyone else. Nor will I be explaining my decision to this people. They don't get it so there's no point.

There were definitely a few confused faces when people heard I was moving from a Porsche (didn't matter the model or age) to a Toyota :ROFLMAO:

That said, we have a good group of petrol heads at work so they're all looking forward to seeing it...and we all own quite different stuff as you say (570GT, S2000, E92 M3, S3, Golf GTi, FK8 type-r, modified MX5 in that group of owners)

I had a 500 with the 1.4 Fire engine in it from the Panda 100hp. Brilliant little car.

Had owned an E92 M3 prior to it so the build and dynamics of the car took some getting used to

Must be a software issue or change they have made I’ve had 7 VAG DSG cars , done over 250k miles and never any trouble, box was epic in the Golf R 🤷🏻‍♂️
DSG boxes are normally quite solid it’s the mechatronic unit that causes most of the issues. Having said that I’ve had a 7spd DSG fail and it’s not cheap. VAG group are not as good as they once were and that really pains me to say that being a life long owner / fan.
