GR86 So what else could you buy new for the same money (a fun thread)?

About the only competition I can think of is an MX-5, which you then take to BBR. But that’s cheating as it’s modified so no longer new/factory spec.

There isn’t any competition.

They didn’t bring the BRZ to the UK as they sold very few (comparatively with the GT86) last time, and they’re virtually identical cars, so what’s the point?

Subaru still had some brand cachet in 2012 compared with Toyota, and that didn’t help the BRZ outsell the GT86, whereas now we have the Gazoo Racing brand and Toyota are cool again, and Subaru are a bit crap lately, so the ratio would be even poorer. My guess anyway.

The reason BRZ didn't sell well here was because they were restricted. There was an agreement between Subaru and Toyota that they could sell on the ratio of 10 86's to 1 BRZ. That and Subaru dealers are few and far between, market share was dwindling and despite them being identical to the 86, many Toyota dealers wouldn't touch them. Look at Nissan too. The pride of Japan with GT-R's, Z cars and it took the French to ruin them

Subaru, while are thought by many as reliable, when I mentioned to a colleague I was getting a GR86, the first thing he asked was the boxer engine related to the 2.5 put in the Impreza as it was known for failures.

@Steve didn't they have some weird sales agreement between them which limited Subaru from selling too many? I'm sure I remember reading something years ago when they first came out.

Interesting, I thought it was always the spec difference, the GT was fully loaded and BRZ always seemed a bit basic.

Just seen that and Abarth 695 (when did it change from 595?) competizione starts from 27,325 and if you get a bit excited with options it can easily creep to 31k!

I paid less that 20k brand new for my 595 comp.
I purchased my comp in 2016 for £23k with performance pack instead of an 86 (and a decision I’m still happy with) now a similar car is £30k+

It applied to the first gen one. No idea what happened for the facelift ones as GT86's gained a Pro model. Perhaps it changed from then on

New shape standard model Civic hybrid is estimated to be around £30k. Got knows how much the new Type R will be, probably 40ish which is what used ones are touching at the moment.

#ridiculousness

Inflation currently at around 9%, and they have to set the price so it still has a margin in a year’s time, as they don’t tend to change prices more often than that.

£30k isn’t a lot for a car any more. This is part of the reason that not a single GRY is for sale less than list. Why spend £30k+ on a PoS Hybrid bingo chariot, or poverty spec gutless repmobile, when you can have a proper rally car for the same money?

Also not new but I've always had a hankering for a V8 Vantage. I nearly went to look at one before I heard about the GR86. I figured that if I don't like it though I can always sell for a slight profit and buy a slightly newer/lower mileage Vantage so no risk.

Very different cars of course. With the Vantage I'd sell my Caterham and have that as my fun car. The GR feels more like a nice everyday car for me though.

I bought this new dog-wagon last week - does that count as a "what else for the same money" ? *

That's a handsome wagon. May I ask what engine this fine looking machine has?

It's far too nice for this thread's original purpose in any case. Only really bland, underpowered appliances are welcome here ! ;)
