GR Yaris Balance of tuning and durability limits

Nice to hear, watching this with interest. How do you feel it compares to before the turbo change?
 
The most surprising change is the aural experience since upgrading the turbo. The intake wooshes were almost embarrassing with the OEM recirculation, Artec uses an external setup which sounds more civilised. Same with exhaust volume. Something about the way exhaust is flowing though now means the volume has dropped somehow. Tune still ongoing so data collection is a few weeks away yet.
 
I use the turbo smart plumb back on the OEM turbo and you are correct. It is less active than the OEM and less vocal. I think it releases the back pressure much faster. Low velocity but a larger mass flow hence less noise

Im thinking about getting the plumb back too but is it better than oem ? I'm not sure doing a remap either . I have an eventuri and would love to have a nice stututu đŸ˜‚

Yes, a bigger turbo running at lower pressure is usually quieter than a smaller turbo running at higher pressure.

Why the Smaller Turbo is Louder
    • High restriction: A small turbo has a small exhaust housing.
    • High backpressure: It traps exhaust gases and creates high pressure behind the engine.
    • Sharp sound: Forcing gas through a tight space makes the exhaust sound louder, sharper, and raspier.

Why the Bigger Turbo is Quieter
    • Easy flow: A big turbo has a larger exhaust housing.
    • Low backpressure: Gases move through it smoothly with less pressure.
    • Deeper sound: Less restriction results in a smoother, softer, and often deeper exhaust note.
 
I would agree with that. Mine was louder before the HJS, it was louder with the OEM recirculating valve and before changing the turbo inlet pipe.
 
I wonder if anyone will ever build a more powerful production 1.6l engine? Rumour had it Koenigsegg Automotive were working on a 400hp 3 cylinder for a hybrid setup.
 
Koenigsegg was 600HP if I remember correctly and used their "free valve" system which means no cams etc - sounds incredible but never actually went in to production for some reason, so Toyota hold the record. I doubt any other company will ever beat it for output as nowadays the focus is not ICE, unfortunately

Which I feel incredibly vindicated about, after years of seeing 'umm actually Koenigsegg have a more powerful one' in social media comments.

Frankly I've always though hypercar makers strain the definition of 'production' anyway.

Try not to think too hard about how good engine tech could be today if it was (and petrol was plentiful) or it will make you sad.
 
Did a quick 100-200 test out of curiosity, half a second faster so far (10s flat). I would like to see mid 9s ideally.

Toyota is making a 2l 400hp that will easily tune to 600hp. So Toyota still catering for the enthusiast. EU opened up for interesting engines past 2035.
Most cars sold for boring transportation don't benefit from a powerfull gasoline engine at all, electrifying those doesn't take away anything from the small number of special engines that come along now and then... The current 3cyl is one of those, the upcoming 2l 4cyl also.

At the same time, when driver oriented EVs are announced, default reflex by many seems to ridicule, but that seems a bit short sighted to me too, we still want more driver's cars instead of self-driving cars in the future, no?

"Opened", but at least in my country, whatever car it will be attached to will end up north of 140k euros, with more than 60% of the price being taxes.

Our government decided that phasing out by increasing taxes until nobody can afford them, creates less headlines and anger than just banning over night.
