GR86 GR86 - Brake Upgrade Guide

Took my 'Nige' down to RRG Macclesfield yesterday and was provided with a lovely new GR Yaris Sport. What a great little car for zipping around in. They fitted the Godspeed Brembo brake upgrade the £999 one, not the Megane 3 callipers. They reported no issues with fitment and picking my car up there was an immediate improvement in feel. I have done the bedding in process which involved 60-30mph pretty hard stops repeated 30 times, which means doing it till you can smell the pad. That's the DS2500 bed in procedure. I had a 330mm AP Racing kit from Reyland on my old GT86 years ago which is basically the same and always favoured these pads as they just work so well on the road, give a lovely feel and providing you have a good amount of braking capacity are just fine on track.

It's a good compromise. I really love that my car is now properly track ready as the stock brakes just don't cut it for me when I start to get serious about braking. I love to trail brake and the key aspect with that is consistency of feel with braking. I'm also touring the Alps again later this year with the GR Yaris crew so being able to stop repeatedly descending mountain passes is important!

Great job by RRG and great kit by Godspeed. Bonus is those red callipers look pretty good too! :)

If you go for the same as Lauren's and the rears too it comes to £1750 and a bit more if you want them sprayed in a different colour. To me that seems reasonable when you look at how much others are charging for the OEM Brembos. I'm still thinking about it and tbh once I find someone I trust to fit them them then I'll probably do it.

Has anyone weighed the standard front discs v the godspeed versions?

My new wheels have added a bit of weight so trying to get it back. :geek:
can't talk about the godspeed. But the APRacing kit sold by Reyland Link - very slow website- has 330mm discs and of course they are heavier than the OEM ones. The AP Racing calipers are lighter than OEM but all together they are heavier than OEM. I am sure that it will be the same with Godspeed. We have a very good spreadsheet somewhere in a sticky post that may list the information.
- For reference, this kit using 325mm x 32mm is listed as saving 10lbs (4.5Kgs) Essex - AP Racing Competition Endurance Brake Kit CP8350 / 325mm
- This other one is the lightest one, I think is supposed to be saving 20lbs but can't find the claim, It is a 292mm disc AP Racing Competition Sprint Front Brake Kit CP8350

Thanks. I was hoping the Godpseed discs were lighter but I think i'm in dreamland. :ROFLMAO:

I think the spreadsheet you refer to is on page one of this thread.

Just weighed some discs for info

Standard discs are 6.6kg each

Our 330mm x 28mm discs and bells for Clio 3 calipers are 6.9kg for bolted and 7kg for fully floating

Our 330mm x 28mm discs and bells for Meg 3 calipers are 7.42kg for bolted , and 7.52kg for fully floating
Hope this helps
Cheers Ian

@Godspeed Are the Clio 3 calipers the ones Lauren fitted?

As well as the OEM GR86 wheels on my car I have some 17" OZ wheels I kept from my GT86 (17x8" 5x100 PCD et35 OZ Racing Ultraleggera). I'll need to work out if they fit under either of these calipers - is there any way of finding out if they will fit other than bringing them down to your shop?

Can't remember which calipers Lauren fitted , the clio 3 calipers are the ones on the slightly cheaper kit.
The clio 3 caliper kit fits under standard wheels , so i'd be surprised if they didn't fit an aftermarket 17" wheel , fit a wheel and measure the gap between the standard disc , and the back of the spoke , the Clio calipers need 55mm gap , the Meg calipers need 60mm gap
Hope this helps

Time for new disks and pads (or just time to buy them to have in the garage more so), after a couple of years and 22k miles, and I have contemplated all options.

For me, the car will never see a track, it commutes in all weathers in salty southwest Scotland and is no garage queen, as it's parked outside as the garage has bikes in it.

The car only ever does some fast country road driving, motorway jaunts or Euro trips (more of those in the planning).

So, balance of outgoing to benefit - I went with the following from Brembo -

Front disks - 09.A921.1X with pads - P.78.021X

Rear disks - 09.C662.1X with pads - P.78.018 (no x pads available for the rear)

I went with the Xtra range as the Sport range is still showing on websites as 'in development' for the GR86.

After some code cross referencing, I sourced the above from Autodoc for £330 delivered. This was just about buying something a little better than OEM.

Will report back when fitted.

I also have some higher quality Dot 4 and 5.1 brake fluids in the garage, just contemplating braided houses from either HEL or EBC but I am not really sure if I will ever feel the benefit of that investment, albeit only around £100.

Same sort of usage profile as me, and I'll probably be due a brake refresh later this year (18k miles so far), so please do!

Finally decided on the brakes. Selected Powerbrakes 325x28 36/40 BBK. Moves the geometric bias rearward a tiny bit (0.33%). Really nice design machined from billet with a top bridge (good for stiffness, not so good for pad changes), clears out stock 18” and Forgeline 17x9 wheels that I use. Removes 3kg per corner. Initial feeling is much shorter pedal stroke and easy modulation.
Installed PB pads for daily and reserved CSG CE2 for track days.
Highly recommend

Has anyone here had experience with BCS Automotive (Brake Caliper Specialists)? I'm thinking of sending my OEM Calipers to them for painting in their Brembo red colour under their 'Lifetime Warranty' service. Mind you, it's not cheap at circa £380 plus delivery each way 🫣 . Not for just now obviously, as I have a BBK fitted (although I'm getting incredibly peeved with the constant loud chirping from the OSF), but they'll be going back on sometime in the future prior to selling the car so I thought I'd get them all neat and tidy.

I've previously used BCS Automotive/Brake Caliper Specialists back in 2018, to recondition a set of STi rear brembo's. There was several issues during the process, initally there was a delay which meant the process took about three weeks from them receiving the calipers to me getting them back, despite being told they'll take less than a week. They then forgot to stencil (there's a proper term for it rather than stencil, but I can't remember what it is) the logo onto them, I asked if they could just use stickers instead and they tried to charge me like £30, so I made a fuss and told them not to worry about the stickers and bought some myself for like £3 off ebay. When I received the calipers back they already had stickers on them. The finish was good and lasted 6 years before I had the calipers reconditioned again, they still had the usual kind of chips and marks. Several other people I know who used them around the same time as me, also had problems with them.

In 2023 I needed to get my front AP Racing calipers refurbished, I therefore also decided to also get the above rears done again, so the finish matched. This time round I used a similar named company, Brake Caliper Refurbs (https://brakecaliperrefurbs.co.uk/) - They are a sister company to Questmead, one of the largest AP racing parts stockists in the UK. I recieved a much better service, can't comment exactly on the lead time, as it was done through a third party. But they did a proper strip down and produced an engineering report for me, which funnily enough reported some quality control issues with my rear calipers. The finish on the calipers is excellent, however the only issue, more an OCD annoyance than anything else, they also painted the brake fluid hydraulic feed on the front AP calipers. If you look on their Facebook feed, they basically do this on all their refurbs. In-fact I just double checked and most of the brake refurbishment companies do this. Other than that I'd happily use BCR again, they weren't exactly cheap but around what I'd expect to pay.

Two other refurbishment companies to consider:

1. Bigg Red - https://www.biggred.co.uk/
2. Godspeed (@Godspeed) - https://godspeedbrakes.co.uk/

My refurbished calipers from Brake Caliper Refurbs.

Thanks for that.
I've since visited a place local to me (XPC in Burntisland) and will be getting them done there for £100, plus a bit 'extra' for the garage next door to strip them all down properly beforehand and rebuild them after the powder coating.
