GR Yaris Are these engines really this fragile?

The maker advises 0W20 - GF6A whatever climate area. In warmer countries, it's wiser to change oil more often / earlier than specified by maintenance book, unless you have an oil cooler and/or a larger oil sump.
That's what I exactly thought the same.
GRY is my toy so only driven it during weekend. Hardly get 1,500KM mileage per 6 months and I just change the engine oil whenever time comes.

No oil cooler at the moment, so far so good. Highway cruise at 160KM/H or above, the engine oil temp could hit 100 degrees and little more but it cool down right after I driving it slowly.

5W30 all the way, my car has no warranty anyway (it's a imported used vehicle from Japan). My past experience with Toyota 86 which factory also recommended 0W20, no regret using my own research and had 5W30 all the while - zero issue.

Just to put context, that is what is called anecdotal evidence.

It's very hard to get good data. You would need a study with thousands of cars. The result would be something like, 0,245% of engines with 0W20 go bang after one year, and 0,986% go bang with 5w30. Yeah maybe with 20w60, the result would be on the anecdotal level. No warranty and hot climate, go ahead, your risk.

Warranty intact on original car and want to keep the warranty and maximise your chances of keeping the car working? Service at Toyota and do additional oil changes with the correct specification. Every six months or 5000km whatever comes first if not tracking/competing. For tracking, change every second or third or even every trackday if it was a long day and the oil got very hot.... Something like that.

Hello,
I noticed that Whifbitz (https://www.garagewhifbitz.co.uk/toyota-gr-yaris-tuning-guide/) has made significant changes to their tuning offerings. They've removed the Kelford Cams EZ mapping option from their ECUtek lineup, now limiting ECUtek tunes to just basic modifications like intake, exhaust, and intercooler upgrades. For setups using EZ and A cams, they've switched to recommending Syvecs for engine management. This change came after they encountered some issues, which were documented in YouTube video that started this threat along with two customer cases. These experiences have led to a more cautious approach among tuners. As an additional safety measure, they're now recommending a built engine with forged pistons and connecting rods when implementing these modifications.

Im sticking to millers EE performance 0w20 for track...changed very regulary!!...with stage 3 airtec cooler and overfill a tiny bit

Never know what to believe with some people....as loads (including tuners) say stick with 0w20 as thats what it is designed for, then some other tuners and so called experts say go to 5w30

I think I know one of the before mentioned customers and can confirm I was told this to be the case. They couldn't get the Kelford cams to work with Ecutek, ran like a bag of spanners apparently. Was one of two well known UK tuners that tried to make it work but he gave up on that setup . He's running Syvecs now.

We own two GR' track editions.

Car 1 GRMN Yaris JDM
135,000 kilometers and still compression is near factory with no blow by, never uses any oil regardless of ambient temperatures or how we thrash it along freeway or autobahn for endless hrs @ 150 k's a hour. I am 100% convinced I will get one million kilometres from this engines.

We may burn off about 20 mm engine oil on one rally but we also change the oil at every stage. This burn off would be used from say Prague to Budva Montenegro as example. This is totally normal as the oil is used to seat and seal the rings.

Simple answer to speculation is no these engines are bullet proof if maintained correctly.

We don't have any issues with Toyota as long as they can see our maintenance record.

We have used motul from day one. We use ours on long distance time trail rallies

Change interval 5000 kilometres
Filter engine interval 2500 kilometres
Motul 5w30 300v racing
OEM filter
OEM air filter
Engine oil is changed hot and left to drain for 5 hrs
Flushed with 2L of motul 5w30 300v plug open.

As the gearbox oil and front diff also generates heat and effects how the engine performs these are changed every 10,000 kilometers.

Totally standard Yaris GRMN Limited edition 500 from Japan 2020 model. I can tell you there is a massive difference between the Japanese version and the European version in engine parts used. Our cars are designed to displace a lot more heat whereas the European version is designed to maintain a lot higher running temperature for efficiency and emissions.

All engine oils are good but are they good for the application that you're using your car for? that is the question you should answer.

I don't have time for the above video it's posted without any supporting engineering root course analisis and virtually no ECM data evidence. The people posting these videos are posting them for several reasons one is they probably have nothing better to do in their lives and 2 they actually earn an income from these videos so while you keep clicking it you keep making them money so he's going to post up anything that is going to make him money personally I find him pointless.

And people think my 3,000km servicing is overkill 😅

Ultra regular maintenance is key 👌🏽

It is weird. You are nearly double the service frequency of who you quoted and they’ve had great reliability.

Yep. After 30,000km everything has been opened and inspected to show practically no wear.

Money well spent for me :)

I also have a good relationship with my workshop and technician, basically use it as a catch up and have a yarn under the hoist. Toyota has seen this car once, and that was when I bought it 😅

It’s only money well spent if you open up a car engine that’s been serviced as per spec and find it has worse wear 🤓

Cute. Or perhaps each 3,000kms warrant the preventative maintenance. But don't let that get in the way of parading carelessness 🫡
You’ve yet to provide any evidence that it does warrant preventative maintenance outside of the manufacturers guidelines.

Is it a slow week mate? I just said my use warrants it. Treat yours as a shopping trolley for all I care 🙃

Some people live in a world without any scientific data and where "I know better" is some kind of evidence
