GR86 What did you do with your GR86 today

Turned active sound off using techstream seeing as I have an aftermarket exhaust. It's still very quiet though as the Hayward and Scott system nulls out loads of noise but has a slightly bassy tone, which is nice for pootling around town. I'll try get some videos of drive-by in case anyone's interested for a very civilised system. May need a hfc or swap the central resonator to get a bit of noise back!

I dropped my pressure and massively improved handling.

Was running recommended 2.4 bar cold, where it gets to 2.7 bar hot!

Dropped it to be 2.4 bar hot, 2.2 cold. Transformed the handling, the car no longer skips over bumps and tyre noise drops a lot, actually grips the road now!

Did my first track day with the 86 (and first track day ever tbh) at Cadwell Park couple of days ago, only just had chance to grab the photos from it. It was absolutely awesome and I'm now completely hooked on track days, already booking another at Blyton park in Aug. The car handled the day like a champ and was more than enough car for me to start digging my teeth in and learn track driving, which was the main reason I bought it so very happy with it.
Any way, here's a few photo's, I also have dashcam footage of my laps but I need to edit them down and host them, will post a link when thats done.

Awesome, glad you enjoyed it @Hicko ! Those pics are great.
If you're going to make a habit of it then I'd definitely recommend checking out Misha's video about basic track prep stuff. Pads, fluid (, braided lines - more for feel that a definite need I'd say), alignment with more front camber. If you've already done it then ignore me :giggle:
I can confirm that the PFC Z-Rated pads are a great dual purpose pad, and if you're feeling flush and can find a set their 08 compound is all the brake pad you'd ever need that still performs nicely on the road.

There's also a nice cheap (surprisingly given the origin of the parts) brake cooling mod which involves zip tieing 997 GT3 brake cooling ducts to the front wishbones. There is already an underbody duct that fires air into the wheel well but this helps it find its way to the centre of the rotors.

I reduced my pressure to 2.2 cold a few months back and it definetely makes the car more pleasant to drive with no downsides I can detect.

The manual for the 86 states only 2.4 which will be based on what's safe for all driving conditions including extreme ones such as 4 adults and their luggage driving at 140mph on the autobahn. The maximum load capacity is 1670kg which is 400kg heavier than an empty car.

On the basis that I'm never likely to load the car anywhere near that I'm quite happy trying lower pressures to see what feels best. I might try 2.0 at the rear next.

Cheers for the info mackie. It’s all stuff I haven’t done yet but had planned to do this year, but I hadn’t really sourced the best info for yet so it’s much appreciated. Other items on the list include an improved anti roll bar.

My plans for the car are to lean towards being track focused without ruining the daily drive feel, so I probably won’t be swapping out the suspension but increasing body rigidity under load.

Edit - just watched the vid and well damn it seems there’s an issue with using camber bolts. That was my plan 😕

@Hicko I think they got the wrong ones - I'm using SPC bolts in the top hole currently and have had no problems.
My plan is sort of similar but I do want adjustable damping and ride height so I'm eyeing up the gen 2 Ohlins Road & Track coilovers that just got released.

Rough plan is:
  • Ohlins (probably with stock or otherwise road-friendly top mounts) or similar kit of similar quality (HKS, KW etc) with no more than about 20mm drop
  • Reyland AP 330mm 4 pot BBK (with road-friendly dust seals) + 997 GT3 ducts
  • 8.5-9" light wheels (WedsSport TC105X if I can fit them in the budget)
  • 225/40 rubber that can take some track abuse
  • Possibly strut brace with integral master cylinder brace
  • Adjustable rear arms if needed
That should result in a car with decent refinement but is appreciably tighter and with more endurance on track. I'll be keeping an eye on the Gapped car for inspiration though.

Busy / expensive morning!
Booked into Guildford Toyota for:
- 2000 mile oil/filter change (its on 1800 at the moment & the car left the factory 12 months ago then sat around for 9, bit overkill but thought might as well put fresh oil now its run in and a year old.
- Ducktail spoiler
- Mudflaps (only front being fitted)
- Rear parking sensors (at last) courtesy of TOL
- snagging like rattles/squeaks/throttle jerkyness check etc
Then
- Full front PPF booked for next week (already have the sills done which has been ideal given the muck the wheels throw across them and catching them when getting in and out)

I'll eventually get around to
- Fitting all the LED bulbs I bought (interior and reversing)
- Changing the colour of the wheels - tbc silver/grey etc
- cleaning the heavy covering of pollen off it!

Finally able to give it a clean after four months. First time I've ever had a car ceramic coated and I realise what I've been missing all these years! So much so, I've booked my other car in to get that done too!

Confession time though, I've still only done 820 miles!
