The instruction in the user manual(open and close door many times) is wrong and won't do anything. You can only put the key in sleep mode to stop it from emitting signal.
Not so, it works! 🄳
I carried out the door routine today and a 2s beep sounded. I can also confirm that the Smart Entry and Start is completely disabled and the Keyfob no longer polls when it is near the car (led doesn’t flash) and the car wouldn’t lock/unlock using the touch areas. The fob buttons have to be used to lock/unlock the doors.

The car will not start unless the keyfob is physically presented to the start button, which results in a ā€˜brrring’ sound, after which the start button can be used as normal. Having the key in the car is no longer enough; because the keyfob isn’t polling there are no signals to say it’s present, hence the need to have it touch the start button.

I did discover that trying to read the instructions and get the timing right didn’t work for me - so I recorded a voice memo and played it to myself so all I had to do was follow my instructions, ā€œclose the door, press the unlockā€¦ā€ etc etc. Result is that Smart (Keyless) Entry & Start is fully disabled.

Update: For those of you that may wish to try this, I have created a small instructional video on Youtube which you could play on your phone whilst in the car. Just listen to the voice and follow the instructions. I promise there is no subliminal messaging that will get you to send me all of your worldly possessions! Muuuhahaha!

Good luck. Just follow the audio cues from my video and do firm presses of the unlock button. The 2s confirmation beep is fairly quiet… šŸ¤“

I've had further contact with TOL after emailing the UK managing director and getting passed on to one of their immediate subordinates. Toyota believe they are justified in changing the specification of their vehicles with zero notice to the customer, and believe they are allowed to provide a product that does not match the specification shown on their website whilst still operating in accordance with the consumer rights act.

It sounds like we should count ourselves lucky the car has 4 wheels and seats.

I don't think anyone one here expected any other response TBH. They are just digging their heels in for the long fight. Taking a hard line approach that they hope will cost them the least, unless it goes the full distance with them losing a class action type of situation.

Yep, unfortunately it's not surprising. It's good to be able to get as much information as I can from somebody other than the first line customer service though.

I got the same reply, I don't think they understand that our issue is them changing the spec, it's more about the inaccurate spec list staying online for who knows how long.

Has anyone got any good news because I'm likely to cancel my car because they've annoyed me too much, I don't wanna give them my money 🤣

It's their attitude that stinks, no apology, just a straight FO, tough titty goodbye. If it wasn't for the 10 year warranty I would never go in one of their dealerships again.

I "spoke" via PM to cubone about a financial services complaint I made and urge anyone, no make that everyone, who took Toyota finance to get a complaint in. They have 8 weeks to respond and if not happy then you can go to the financial ombudsman. Not sure what the timescale is for the financial ombudsman but it must surely be quicker then the 6 months intimated by the motoring ombudsman. You have nothing to lose by kicking up a stink with TFS so let rip. TFS have full liability over the end product as it is a linked financial services product and as Toyota are blankly refusing to make good the situation TFS have to assume that responsibility. If Toyota want to take the hard approach then as a collective we should hit back as hard on as many fronts as possible.

From the perspective of the untruths and BS from TOL I’d have handed the car back…

From the perspective of having the GR as a daily driver then there’s no way the car is going back.. 2,000 miles in and I absolutely love it

Yeah it's a shame, it's a good car but I want to feel valued as a customer after spending big money there, it's one of my principles for better or worse šŸ˜‚

I live quite close to a vehicle recovery firm so at this time of year i see many many mangled and bashed vehicles being carried/towed past my abode.

Often these helpless vehicles have their alarms sounding as they make the journey they have no control over.

This has always struck me as being rather undignified for the poor vehicles; a little sad and pathetic really. A bit like the motoring equivalent of a dog or cat's 'Cone of Shame".

Every cloud, comrades...

Hi everyone,

Iam a new member. Got my Mag. Grey last week. I've been thinking about how to protect the car from thefts ever since I booked it. For now, I've put a stocklock elite, got Faraday pouches for the keys and I am planning to install a ghost Immobiliser. Dealer told me that factory alarm is active but I don't trust him, yet to check.

I've heard that Ford focus is one which is high on the theft-o-meter list. My question is, how attractive is the GR86 for thieves and is it an easy car to steal? Has anyone had any attempts on their car and were the thieves successful? What security measures have you taken?

Thanks in advance and Happy New Yr to all the members.

Cheers
Koshy

Hi everyone,

Iam a new member. Got my Mag. Grey last week.

Congrats, welcome. All I've done is got a Faraday box too. I don't know how easy to steal they are, or how targeted.

Are you the first registered owner and did you get much of a deal?

My question is, how attractive is the GR86 for thieves and is it an easy car to steal?

Don't know how easy it is but weren't some Toyotas being nicked just by removing a headlight and bypassing something or other and not even needing any fancy key mimicking device?

As to how attractive they are to steal my logical head says not very, so the real question is how logically do thieves think? Do they nick cars because they can and then work out how to make money from the theft or do they know what they can make from certain brands of car? Stealing one to resell whole is probably a non starter since it is a bit of an enthusiasts car with not that many on the road so nicking one and trying to clone its identity is not really possible and any potential buyer will probably spot a dodgy seller as they won't know much about the car as they won't be an enthusiast. So the other option is nick one and break it for parts which is utterly pointless, all cars are under warranty right now and many may well be for 10 years so none of us are going to be scouring gumtree for used parts to fix a broken anything, we'll take it to a dealer and tell them to fix it for nothing.

So you're saying I should nick one?

Yes, I am the first registered owner.
£32495 + £645 for paint. Added complimentary front dash cam (Nextbase 380GW) when I requested. APR 8.4.
For my previous corolla 22Reg with another dealer, they gave me insurance for the first 2 days. But not this time. Apparently Toyota stopped this along and 0% finance.

I think they know the customer base for this car and knows that it will be bought without much effort from their end.

Stupid question please @Sonic .... How do I reverse the procedure if I decide that I prefer the way the car is now?
