GR86 Tyres

Costco thurrock were perfectly happy to fit to loose rims

Any photos side on with the wheel, they look super meaty.

Still undecided what tyre to go for on the new wheels. Still love Michelin's, the two fitters I normally use don't stock these Conti's as Michelin's have always worked well. Do fancy a change though, purely to expand my palette a bit.

I've not put the Supersports through their paces yet but you can feel instantly that they're a gripper, stiffer and more responsive tyre than the PS4. I'd imagine the Conti SC7s to be very similar in nature to the Goodyears but never had them myself.

There's also the option of Michelin Cup 2s - they can be had for around £120 each.

I'm more likely to try the Goodyear next as I used to run them for years before the switch to Michelin, where I've not run anything else on car or bike since that wasn't Michelin. The Swift is the exception as it's inherited and had a mix of crap on it. That will get Uniroyal Rain Experts when the time comes but it's not a sporty car and for it's weight it's ideal.

Grip and performance is all very well, but what is the quietest tyre? I find the PS4s quite noisy compared with whatever Michelin I had on the GT86 (which went 34k mls in 6 years and still had enough tread left for a few thousand more). Most of my mileage is longer distance trips.

With the cup 2s you wouldn't be able run them in any weather except dry summer. If you are looking at this level of tyre, then you also got the Bridgestone potenza race, which I use for my trackday rubber in 225/40 18 on 8.5x18 rims.

The conti7 and GY asy6 are a good all round UHP tyre that will get you through winter (down south at least) with careful considerate driving. If the GR is your daily, then a tyre swap at winter time is a must.

I understand that some owners want the convenience of an all season tyre but I find it just defeats the object of buying a GR86 in the first place.

How do you find the potenza race?

Must admit, High end road rubber is so good now I rarely consider anything more. That said, I did try potenza sport on track in the last car and they just melted after a couple laps, so they aren't a good comparison, but csc7 / supersports / pzero are all excellent now at handling multiple environments

Out of all the track day tyres I've used over the years (Toyo 888, AD08RS and Potenza Race) the Potenza Race is the leader. Tyre tech moves with the times and it's not surprising its what I find the best. I guess 2 years down the line, it'll be another tyre. I was going to run them as my summer tyres but due to car being setup with -3deg camber up front, I'm not sure how inside wear would be like being used a the road. So far for track use, the wear has been even accross the tyre. Then again I did a 1200mile euro trip with the PS4's and they haven't shown any increased inner edge wear...

With my use, I only use them on track and take them with me to swap out. Once they wear out though, I will be changing my tyre set up and drop down to 17"x9" with a 245/40 tyre. The current 18x8.5 track wheels, I'll stick some 225/40 (maybe 235/40) rubber on and use them as my road wheels. I'll be happy to use Potenza race again but in the new 17" setup, they don't do my size. May have to use Nankang AR1 as its the only one with the size without going sill money.

After an extensive review of the Evo tyre test I'm thinking Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S due to its good composure on slip in wet and dry.

Other consideration was the Conti Sport Contact 7 but although fastest in wet and dry doesn't seem as adjustable into oversteer.

Thoughts?

When it's time to get new road rubber, my current choice would be the Goodyear F1 Asymmetric 6. It's highly rated with a decent price.

Someone uses them in this thread, maybe they can chime in with their feedback

I do. I have them on my Bola FLE 18x8 alloys in size 225/40R18. As a Summer tyre, I chose them after seeing several reviews praising them for their 'wet' performance. That said, I haven't had so much as a 'skip' from the wheels in any weather since putting them on. Decent price point in that size too.

As my ps4 lost 5mm in 8000 miles and beached me in the snow i went for turanza 6s will see how they fair, after a winter on steels i kerbed the front wheel within 10 minutes of putting it on, glad i didnt get them refurbed now

I’ll probably swap the old PS4s on the original wheels for Crossclimate 2s for winter.
