GR Yaris The waiting game...

Hi guys,

I registered to be a part of the self-help group "How long can we accept waiting and will we be still alive when our cars arrive". My Yaris was ordered on 2nd of June 2021, and I did the mistake to order it in Germany at my local dealer. So I am still waiting with no feedback from the dealer or Toyota itself.

If the car wasn't holding its value so well, I would be tempted to cancel my order. But after over two years of waiting, I think I can manage the remaining months. Having grown up in Western Germany, I am more impatient than our compatriots who ordered a Trabant in Eastern Germany and had to wait ten years for their beauties to arrive, but I will manage because in the end even the GR Yaris "is just a car".

Of course it is not "just a car", damn it. It is Japanese engineering and sporty spirit, it is nimble, it is agile, it has a manual transmission, it has the most entertaining and capable three-cylinder apart from Koenigsegg, it only weighs 1,280 kilos, it has the handbrake which decouples the rear axle, and in its B-road performance it is unmatched in its class and above.

As soon as I get a production start update from MyToyota, I will post in this thread.

@GRunt I totally understand where you are coming from. For me also, street cars are on the edge of "becoming to fast" on the public roads for safe and fun exploration of their capabilities. The MX-5 is always an entertaining choice, so let me list a few pros and cons:

Pros:
- Open roof: If you like a cabriolet, than you have more sensorial experiences: The smell of the nature, the noises, the wind above your hair or your bold skull. I appreciate that.
- Lightweight: even lighter than the Yaris by around 250 kg. You will feel the difference in driving. And it keeps maintenance relatively cheap. I assume an MX-5 is noticeably cheaper to run than the GR Yaris.
- Eager revving: The 184 hp engine has a nice top end rush up until 7,5k, and if you were to tune it (at a significant 8 grand more), you could get a new red line at 8k with 220 hp. Together with a shorter final drive, this car will feel very speedy. Unfortunately, this brings the car beyond 40k.
- Good infotainment controls: no touchscreen-only solution, but buttons. BUTTONS! Which you can use without having to look away from the road.

Cons:
- Suspension setup: To my liking, even with the Bilstein suspension, there is far too much body roll when you really push the car. I have no idea, how much "after-market upgrade" will be necessary to fix this. Please note this is my personal taste.
- Numb steering: This was the biggest drawback when I test drove an ND with the 184 hp engine. You steer, the car reacts, but I got no feeling for what the front wheels are doing at that moment in the corner. And I have no clue how this could be fixed after-market. Nobody will build in a hydraulic steering, and I doubt there will be someone reprogramming the electric steering.
- In comparison to the Yaris less space: Very obvious of course. But when you like to buy two crates of beer and a crate of cola for personal taste or a small party with friends, then the capacities of the MX-5 are very limited. If you live a life like me meaning staying mostly away from other people, the MX-5 still has enough space. Unfortunately and fortunately at the same time, my "misery" is accompanied by a beloved dog of moderate size (knee-high), and the ND MX-5 does not have enough space for her because the dashboard reaches too much into the cabin.

Verdict:
You will have great fun in the MX-5 also. It is a totally different driving experience to the Yaris. I wish you could afford both, but don't get into financial trouble because of cars! If you decide for one option, please keep in mind if (one of) the cons I mentioned are or might become an issue for you during ownership.

@sb-harald , thanks for your writing!

My test drive yesterday was kind of to ways.

Yes the car was great. I can confirm on nearly all your mentioned aspects. The engine is good. Nice build up, linear rev climbing and delivery. Enough torque down below, but comes to live after 4.5 k. It sounds uhm okay. Not to bad. But it's no F20 we're I am constantly grinning when reving up. It's nice balancend and round. Same goes for suspension. It's good. Agile and eager to steer. Takes road imperfections calm and sophisticated. It's no were near to hard. Actually quite soft, but that fits to the driving style of the car. It leans and rolls a bit and that's great, because it tells you perfectly what the chassis is doing. To be honest, it's kind of needed as well. Because the one thing that I really did not liked was the steering feel. As you said, it's numb. It steers god, good rotation on throttle as well, good counter steering. But it tells you very less about road and traction and tires. On the other hand, the shifter is a talker. It vibrates and klicks and has a great mechanical feeling to it. It's directly connected to the transmission. You can tell.

With a day in between. I have to say, it's a great car. It's lightweight design and puristic approach is great as well. But it's very uhm how to say, serious and refined. it's round and balanced.

I have to say, I am missing the jdm edginess a bit. There is this bonker character missing, that some other jdm cars have. It's a bit to well balanced for my taste I think. πŸ˜†

So I have to skip on that. But iz definitely will rent a MX5 from time to time to ride through the fields and countryside πŸ˜†

I'm currently driving an MX-5 RF G160 and the steering feel and body roll issues were completely gone when I got a different suspension (SPS Street) installed. I'm also planning to keep both the Miata and the Yaris. You have to pry the Miata from my cold, dead hands. I love that car so much!

And here I am, hoping my order will arrive before the end of 2023 (ordered in Belgium end of january 2022, estimated delivery at the moment is october 2023)

Guys, I did something terrible. I did drove a MX5 2.0 with Billstein and Recaro seats today...

It was good. Very good. Its much more in the direction, I am emotionally attached to. High reving NA engines, light weight chassis. Good for road use, fast agile but not crazy fast and capable. Good fit for my driving skills.
We really are going through the same thing πŸ˜‚ Not sure if I ever wrote about it here but I test drove an MX5 (~3 months ago) too!

They have a grey one ready for sale, new for 35k EUR. I am tempted.
Huh, if I recall correctly I was offered a much better price. Edit: Nevermind, the one I liked didnt have the Bilsteins and the recaros.

I can not have both. I only want to pay and store and so on one car, so it has to be a daily. And the GRY and the MX5 are totally different cars. I am confused in my ability to make a decision. πŸ™‚πŸ™ƒ
Ultimately, I decided it was too small for me. The space inside is small, the boot is small. I also found the price to be too expensive for what it is. A well used one for 20k might be interesting but at 30k+ I am less tempted.

I think I found a better (used) alternative and I have been researching it for a week now. Porsche 981 Boxster. A bit more expensive but very enticing especially in the S trim. More usable with its 2 boots too imo. I said too much!!!

Seems like most of us Germans have the same delivery experience. Jeez they must have screwed things up there...

Registering here and joining the group has helped seemingly. In current context indeed earlier than expected (reads strange, I know), I received Toyota's notification that the production for my car has started.

Most important facts about the order:
- Ordered in Germany on June 2nd, 2021.
- with High Performance Package
- painted in "craftsman van white"
- 300 hp GR Corolla performance upgrade for free (I wish)

My Toyota website (Mein Toyota in Germany) has been updated with a new design again. I can no longer see my order(s). The app still works.

Oh also, remember my sad story about buying a slightly used GRY first then cancelling it to order a brand new one? Have I mentioned that I see it everytime I login to MyT? Sometimes it defaults to the old car and shows me the tracking page with car already at dealer. It nearly gives me a heart attack every time.

Damn couldn't you switch back to that? Did you asked your dealer about it?

Has some of your cars left the harbor in Japan. Mine did it yesterday, but don’t know how to track on what boat it could be.

This is the one I bought back in June 2021. It was delivered to the dealer in April/May 2021. I never saw the car but it was practically new at 800kms. Pretty sure they sold it pretty quickly after I canceled the purchase.

Can anyone with a UK order chime in about the new MyT design and order visibility? The app works but the website stopped showing any orders.

okay, it's official. i got fucked up by the dealer. the order number he gave me is from an other car. to put it short, i have no order but many excuses since two years waiting.

and i won't pay 45k EUR for one new. so guess i was very to late the the party with my 30th August 2021 order and won't get a GRY after all.

i need a drink ... or few. maybe many. bye for now. did i say the MX5 i just took a look at got sold?

If you want burger, don't order a salad :).

Sorry for the crappy dealer shit :(.

Shit. You definitely deserve a drink. Once you are done though, please come back because I have a lot of questions now.

Those who can't see their orders on app/web should be slightly more concerned now.

That sucks, I always liked that you were so active in this thread because we (seemingly) ordered on the same day. I hope everything works out for you, maybe it was just a misunderstanding...

Edit: just read again and saw 30. of August, I thought you always said end of September?

So I am back under the living. πŸ˜†

Yes I thought it was end of September, it's two years ago after all but took a look at the confirmation. The date is 30th August. So I was at 23 month now.

Seems like the dealer despite his promises did not sent the order immediately to toyota becausehe forgot it. And when he did, it was to late. And he had not the balls to say this to me and tried to get a cancelled order.

If he would just have told me, I would be okay. Bit angry but okay...

Hi everyone,

I registered today and i want to say "Hello". Sadly i do not have my GR Yaris yet, since i put my order in May 2021! in Nothern Germany.
So if i am in the wrong thread please skip it to the right place :)

If i read all the "delivery-things" happend in Germany, i really think of not to leave my manuel M2 LCI for the Yaris. Worst case would be that i sell my M2 and the dealer will not get me my car. So i am confused and i am thinking which of those cars is the better choice.

Maybe one of you guys will give me some input :)

Best regards
