GR86 The GR86 : Time for a reality check

North of the Border in Scotland it doesn’t matter whether it’s 95,98 or 99 Octane as they are all E10 by decree of our leaders in Edinburgh. Should I wish to buy fuel with less (or even zero) Ethanol in it, I’d have to drive South the 2-3 hours each way to find it. I just use Tesco Momentum for the most part as it’s local but again, it’s still E10. I blame Covid… and Brexit… and the Cost of Living Crisis… [insert others here] :LOL:.
This isn't true. The super at my local Scottish Esso is 99 octane E5.

I should have chosen my words more carefully; I meant general/standard fuel, whereby all standard E5 has now been mandated to be E10. You have to go out of your way to find E5 in Scotland as the major outlets have converted. To the most part it just isn’t worth the travel distance. If you’ve got it local to you that’s brilliant, infuriatingly even my 98ron station is E10 ☹️

I would like to see a dyno run on an 86 to compare the 2 fuels. Personally, with the GT I could never tell the difference but I haven't really tried with the GR. For some reason I am still prepared to pay 10p a litre for that indiscernible improvement. Anyway, isn't it a bigger deal on turbo cars where temp and pressure is higher in the cylinder?

Don't forget our cars run a high static compression ratio compared to a turbocharged engine. It's mainly ignition timing, the higher octane fuel reduces knock allowing the ECU to run more aggressive timing before preignition occurs.

One thing to consider with running E5 super is the improvement fuel consumption, that definitely negates a portion of the extra cost.
 
Guys the unleaded thing is reallllly simple.

95 unleaded means 95 Ron's have extracted 95 leads from the lead. This is reasonable but still leaves some leads.

99 unleaded means 99 Ron's have worked a bit harder to removed four more leads from the lead.

The best petrol is called 4 star leaded petrol, super fast, great for the environment and Ron loves it.

Sadly the petroleum industry has been afflicted by the lack of people called Ron, somewhat bolstered by the wizard movies for short period.

So took a GR86 for a test drive today. I’d already completed my order but from reading this thread, rewatching some reviews and the general hype for this car I was starting to maybe think it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. So I decided I had to test drive one to find out, I hopped in the FK8, as I’d been neglecting it for the past few weeks whilst on a road trip in France, and headed down to the nearest “GR centre”.

I’ve gotta say, even though the test route was largely pathetic (probably less than 5 miles total, with no real opportunity for any sort of real driving) I thought the GR86 was pretty great. Great, low seating position, gear change felt really good, steering (like the FK8) was still pretty numb but still went where I wanted it to go so can’t really complain. It felt quite nimble and not lacking for pace which was what I was slightly concerned at. Overall felt like a really solid usable sports car, clutch was a little clunky to get used to, but got the hang of it quickly. I also felt with the seats down there was a pretty large amount of luggage room for soft bags etc. which is a bonus.

Definitely reaffirmed that I’m not crazy for ditching the FK8 for it!

Great to hear.

My hopes and aspirations when starting this thread were to point out some collated potential issues which may bother prospective owners (definitely not to criticise the GR86 overall nor to put people off); if you've read everyone's views, gone and driven the car and enjoyed it yourself, then mission accomplished and it's very likely a car for you!
 
Hence me suggesting tuneful rather than just louder. A well tuned exhaust with a little more presence and volume than the stock set up would be a change for the better. A raspy/boomy fart box of an exhaust would not. In the same way stupid pop and bang remap on corsa VXR’s or similar are the preserve of tasteless dickheads.

I leave mine almost permanently with the rear seat down and I can fit my golf clubs, still attached to their old style 3 wheel trolley, through the boot opening and in the back, with zero deconstruction. I'm lazy af, and this saves me 3-6 minutes every time. Obviously this is countered by then spending 4-5 hours traipsing round god's waiting room! A friend with a Cayman looked most impressed at the w/e.

I'm trying to persuade the boss to consider a road trip down to the Alps in Austria, and I would consider taking our dog (small-medium) - capacity for 2 is pretty impressive.

For 2 and a small / medium dog on the back seat you'll be fine. We went to Le Mans and got all out kit in the boot - the back seats stayed empty 99% of the time.
We have a hammock type arrangement in the dog waggon that fits around the front and rear headrests - I don't see any reason why that wouldn't work in the GR86 to keep the majority of dog hairs away from the seats.

Im here to set the record straight!!!!
Timing is the nickname of a Taiwanese lady in a Cheshire service station just off the M56. She’s absolutely fascinated by octane levels and if you can show her the keys to any two door Toyota, you’ll pull her no problem.
I hope this helps clear things up.

His gripe about the auto fold mirrors is spot on. The complaints about the suede I'm not so sure about though....

Driving the BMW 1M for a video featuring the new M2 (check out the TG YouTube channel to see the whole thing) alerted me to the fact the GR86 is not alone in being an Application of Silly Suede (ASS).

The Toyota weirdly uses it where you’ll never touch – the door tops, and the instrument hood. Blow me down, the 1M does the same thing: suede dashboard trim strip, door cards, and binnacle, but nothing where your hands might use it. This isn’t a flaw, more just a curious design choice. A bit like putting soft-touch plastic under the seats.

And the suede on the instrument binnacle makes perfect sense, as any sort of hard plastic there causes horrible reflections in the windscreen when the sun is directly above. Happened in the GT86 and one of the most common mods was to switch to a suede covered binnacle.

Certainly agree (with you Conscript ) re. the suede. Less bothered about the mirrors personally, as having folding mirrors of any kind is still a bit of a novelty (most cars I've owned haven't had them). I suppose it makes sense if they are fitted to have them fold on lock though.

Yup, the non-folding-on-lock mirrors is just plain silly. I guess it comes down to ££.
