GR86 "That's a fresh whip bruv"; or the Toyota GR86 collated feedback thread

A brief collation of responses from some weekend driving.

Group 1: I had three separate, unsolicited "thumbs ups" from the drivers of a c.2000 Impreza Turbo, a 1970s MG convertible, and a bright yellow Ferrari 458 Spider.

Group 2: I had three separate instances of being aggressively tailgated, all by huge Mercedes SUV-type electric vehicles.

As we all know, once is an occurrence, twice is a coincidence, and three times is a pattern. So we can draw the following conclusions:

Performance/sports car owners/enthusiasts (Group 1) are a broad church and are respectful of other such cars. Large Mercedes EV drivers (Group 2) are morons, and I wish for them to be afflicted by knobrot.

Enjoy your afternoons.

I've been aggressively tailgated by all sorts but recently as yesterday, it was missing links driving standard Fiesta's. It only takes one corner to put some lengths on them to see if they take the hint but they inevitably catch up and I'm not being goaded into driving hard when it will be seen as racing which is a big no no.

I parked in a street in my local town this afternoon and no sooner had I turned the engine off a voice was heard! ........
An unknown face had appeared at my drivers door window. One of those large chaps with a big black beard that looked like he had swallowed a bear and left his a*** hanging out!!! 🐻
He announced quite loudly..............
'That's a f****** fine weapon mate!'
Then he made off down the street. As I wasn't armed to the teeth I'm sure he was referring to the 86 😆 😃 ......
I hope so!!
And No! He wasn't eating a pasty before you ask!! 😃

This is precisely the anecdote this thread was lovingly crafted for. "Fine f**king weapon" indeed!

Had my first randomers give their views on the car the last two days.
In the work carpark yesterday, as I was getting in someone walking by said "nice wheels". I looked around, there was no one else about her could have been taking to!

Then earlier today a delivery person commented, but not like they original post. He said the car looked good, and asked was it one of the new cars. He asked a couple of other questions about what it was like to drive.

It's no coincidence I gave the car a wash on Sunday and now it's been appreciated 🧽 👀

One flash (of the lights - steady) by a driver in an MPV - presume they were on the school run and were dreaming of a life without kids... :p

Also much tailgating - not sure if that's because people want a better look, or they can't see down that far, or if it's just the magnified rear view mirror and lower viewpoint making it look worse.

Delightful experience the other day, overtook someone in a red van doing 45 on a 60 backroad, safely, easily, no drama, he tried to keep up and failed.

Pulled up at the lights, he drove passed me swearing and shouting.

I decided to let him carry on and pulled right back. Saw him dangerously overtake 3-4 other cars, including after a long period of tailgating him getting out the car to shout at someone.

Mentioning it related to the car as I've had some negative reactions to overtaking (bellend in a blue sports car?) that I haven't found before?

I’ve had a similar experience in mine involving a bloke in a pocket size camper van that seemed to be an early 80s relic. Of all places this was in a sleepy part of the Cotswolds. Who’d have thought a white insignia overtaking him would cause so much rage 🤷🏼‍♂️

Sounds like a delightful fellow and dealt with by your good self with customary grace and patience.

(Are we absolutely certain that this aforementioned fellow hasn't got a GR86 tucked away at home and had just missed out on the final boot strap?)

Took mine to a classic (and otherwise) car meet in Northampton on Thursday evening - lots of positive comments & attention and it sparked a delightful 20 minute conversation with a like minded chap.

Seems everybody knows about the waiting list, difficulty getting hold of one and flippers!

Popped out to bakers today. No on street parking spaces, so I parked at eurotronics shop car park at side street. When I returned shop owner come out. I was expecting telling off, but chap said, he saw it on security camera and was like is that a new Jag? Then he saw the Toyota badge and was like mate that is a beautiful car. Is it a Supra? I gave him the spill, limited production 86. Last of the breed…. He was like, I am not a car guy but that thing is stunning.

I was engaging in a WhatsApp messaging conversation with an old mate today, who I haven't seen in person for about 12 months (we don't live near each other nowadays).

After we'd caught up about other matters pertaining to work and family and the like, I mentioned I'd acquired a GR86 which was met with some confusion; he hadn't heard of it. I sent a picture and received the response: "Oh so it's like a mini Supra then".

A mini Supra, indeed!

In his defence, he's more into bikes nowadays.

I had a coach driver at a petrol station offer to steal my car today (jokingly - as far as I know, car thieves in Bedfordshire aren’t so polite to offer a warning of their nefarious intentions).

Born and raised in that county, I can concurr that this is true; However, offered purely as an example to the contrary, in the 80s my schoolfriend stole my RD250LC (to prove how quickly he could do it) between my parking at the kerb and drawing some cash from the hole-in-the-wall. He said he would, he did and returned it after doing a wheelie circuit of the Harpur Centre for good measure.

Was in Aberystwyth to spectate at Rali Ceredigion and heard a group of lads talking while we were stopped at a set of traffic lights.

To paraphrase “Oh sh1t, it’s one of the new GRs, wow, haven’t seen one in the flesh yet”
So taking that as some very positive feedback 😆
All up that way used to be my home roads. I still visit regularly and I'm back up for a charity drive in a few weeks called the Mach Run. Gutted I missed the Rali
